Description

A. C DE LOS RIOS.
PROPELLBR.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 11, 1911. M 1 .031,629. Patented JulyT 2,1912.
rs arena Fre@ ALONSO CARDOSO DE Los RIOS, OF HABANA, CUBA.
PROPELLER.
To allan/wm t may conce/m Be 1t known that I, ALoNso CAnDoso Dn Los Rios, a subject of the King of Spain,
vides an increased driving surface over the ordinary propeller,'by means of which negative slip can bemininuzed, which may be oi any desired pitch, measured both radially and longitudinally, which may be ofsectional form to facilitate repair and replacement, and which may be fashioned from any suitable material. u
The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth. in the claims. n
,Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings `forming a part of this specific-ation, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure l is 'a side elevation of an embodiment of my invention; Fig.2 is a longitudinal section of the propeller; `and Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3-3 of Fig.- 2.
Before proceeding to amore detailed explanation of my invention, it should be clearly understood that while the same is particularly useful as apropeller for marine propulsion, it can also be advantageously applied to other uses, for example, as a propeller for aeroplanes or other types of airships. If so desired, the device -can also be adapted for different purposes in which screw blades are employed, for example in connection with air-forcing mechanism or the like.
Certain of the details\o.t construction shown for example herewith, form no part of the invention, and can be varied in accordance with individual preference and Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 11, 1911. Serial No. 626,469.

special conditions, without deviating from theessence of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Referring moreparticularly to the drawings, I have shown for example, a shaft 9 'of conventional form, upon which the propeller is mounted. The propeller illustrat-ed herewith is formed in three sections A, B and C, which have hollow hubs 10, 1l and l2 respectively, of elongated, tapered form. The hubs 10 and Il at correspondand 14 adapted to be received in thecorrespondingly threaded ends of the respective sections 11 and 12, to assemble the sections and to form a continuous, elongated, tapered hub. At the opposite ends, the sections 1() and 12 are internally threaded, and receive respectively, reduced, threaded parts of heads 15 Aand 16, of suitable form. The heads engage the annularY end edges of the sections 10 and 12 and are provided with 'openings 17 and 18 through which the shaft 9 extends.
The propeller has blades of tapered, helic al form. helical surfaces of any suitable pitchand if desired, of varying pitch, and of varying radius. The blades are sectional, and each oit' the sections A, B and C has corresponding blade sections 19, 2O and 21 associated therewith. rlVhile I have shown for eXample herewith blade and hub sections formed integral, the blade sections may be associated removably in any suitable manner with the hubs, if s0 desired.
I prefer touse three as illustrated. The sections of the propeller are so assembled that the respective blade sections register, so'that the blades are continuous from one end of the hub to the other. I prefer to eX- tend the ends of the blade sections 19 and 21 longitudinally beyond the corresponding ends of the hub sections 10 and 12, as is clearly shown in Fig. l. These ends are preferably rounded.
It will be understood that certain of the considerations which apply to ordinary propellers also apply to my propeller. For example, considerations of dierent pitch, blade area,` driving surface, blade edge form, and materials of construction. As is shown That is to say, the blades have,
Any suitable number of blades may be employed, thoughlingends have reduced, threaded necks 13,
herewith, I prefer to employ blades in which 1w' the longitudinal pitch decreasesitowardgthe smaller lend of the' hub. Owing to the, ta-
i0 tain of said pered form ot the blades the line of the'free edge of each blade is substantially a conical spiral.
Having 5 claim as new, ters Patent:
1. A' propeller, comprising a plurality ot sections, tapered hub and a helical blade section, cerr hub sections having threaded engagement, and heads having threaded en gagement with the end hub sections, the lines of the free edges of said blades being substantially conical spirals.
thus described my invention, 4lf and desire to secure by i5 f 2. A propeller comprising a plurality of" Let-l eaeh consistingv of an -elongated,.
sections-each consist-ing of an elongated, tapered hub and a helical blade section, one of said hub sections having a reduced,
threaded end, the other of said hub sections being interiorly threaded to receive said re- 20 of tvvo subscribing Witnesses.
