WILLIAM J. NEAL, OF BLOOMINGTON, INDIANA.
BOLT-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2,1912.
Application filed January 17, 1912. SeriaI No. 671,604.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. NEAL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomington, in the county of Monroe and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bolt-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The general object of the invention is to prevent the turning of a bolt in the rim of a wheel or analogous structure with the nut or bur, when the latter is turned so as to unscrew it from the bolt.
Other objects will appear and be better understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which,
The figure is a perspective showing a fragment of a wheel partly in section and the device arranged in operative position, and also showing by dotted lines the position of the parts in inoperative position.
The arms 5 and 6 of the yoke a have curved end portions 7 to embrace the rim 8 on either side of the bolt to be removed and herein designated by 9. The bolt holder 7) has a bent end portion 10 which is pivoted as at 11 to one end portion of the cross piece 12 of the yoke a and has a bit 13 adapted to fit the usual recess in the head of the bolt or to bite into a non-recessed head when forced to do so by the means hereinafter described. The operating lever or handle 1% is pivoted as at 15 to the cross bar 12 and is connected to the free end of the bolt holder by pin and slot connections 16.
When the curved end portions 7 embrace the rim 8 the cross piece 12 of the yoke will be considerably beyond the tire and when the operating lever or handle is raised the free end of the bolt holder will likewise be raised. In this position and assuming that Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the the yoke is arranged as shown in Figure 1, the bit 13 will be a little to one side and over or beyond the bolt 9 so that when the operating handle or lever is depressed the bolt holder will be moved so as to move the bit into the recess of the head. Then the parts are in this position and as shown in full lines in the figure, it will be seen that the device is clamped to the rim so that the operator may remove his hand from the operating handle and have the use of both hands in unscrewing the nut or bur 17.
The parts included in the foregoing description are of metal and suitably worked into the shapes shown.
' Although I have shown and described one embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that I am not to be limited to the specific arrangement and construction of parts since various changes may be made, within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the inven tion.
What I claim as new is: A bolt holder for wheels comprising a yoke having arms, portions of which are curved to embrace the rim of the wheel, an element pivoted to the yoke and provided with a sharpened bolt engaging bit, an operating lever pivoted to the yoke, and pin and slot connections between the operating lever and the said element for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM J. NEAL.
