EMBALMING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, 1912.
Application filed November 2,1511. Serial No. 658,175.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEvEY McCoy, a citizen ot the United States, residing" at Memphis, in the county 01" Shelby, State of Tennessee, have invented'certain new and useful Improvements in Embahning Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, andexact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same:
This invention relates to embahning' appa 'atus.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of an embalming apparatus through the instrumentality of which the embalming operation may be performed with comparative ease, very effectively, with minimum attention.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein, like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in Which Figure l is a perspective view showing the apparatus suspended for use, Fig. 2, a view partly in elevation and partly in per spective showing the manner of supplying fluid to the-reservoir or the apparatus. previous to suspending the latter to institute the operation of embalming, Fig. 3. a vertical section through the reservoir of the apparatus, and Fig. 4:, a detail perspective view showing the manner of securing the removable bottom of the reservoir in place.
Referring to the drawings, 10 indicates the reservoir of the apparatus which is preferably constructed of glass of the transparenttype. This reservoir 10 is surrounded by a metal acket 11 secured in place in any suitable manner andprovided with an opening 12- through which the quantity of fluid in the reservoir may be at all times observed. To assi t in ascertaining the exactamount of fluid in the reservoir the latter between the sides of the opening 12 is provided with scales 13 each of which has a definite designation placed in line therewith upon the jacket '11. The reservoir 10 is provided with an opening l t in its bottom and an,
'nipple communicates and strap 22 and draw the strap firmly outwardly direct-ed flange 15 surrounding said opening. Secured against the bottom of the. reservoir across the opening 1% is a cap 16 which has extending centrally therethrough and secured thereto a tube 17 one end of which projects into the reservo and terminates a short distance from the top of the latter, while the otherend ofsaid tube is disposed outside of the reservoir. The cap 16 further carries a nipple l8 projecting outwardly with respect to the reservoir and disposed at an inclination to the cap. This at its inner end with the interior of the reservoir and is adapted to receive on its outer end adischarge tube 19, the outer end of which latter carries a needle 20 for insertion into the desired, artery of the corpse. The tube 19 is further provided at a suitable point in its length with a screw valve 2i for controlling the flow of embalming'fluid th'erethrough.
In order to bind the cap 16 against the bottom of the reservoir there is hinged to.
the lower end of the jacket ll'a strap 22 adapted for movement transversely of the reservoir so as to dispose itself across the outer face of the cap 16. Mounted on the lower end of the jacket 16 diametrically opposite from the hinged connection of the strap 29 is a cam latch 2;) which is adapted to operate through an opening in the against the outer face of the cap, thereby drawing said cap with relatively great pressure against the bottom of the reservoir and producing a fiuid tight joint.
The reservoir is adapted to be suspended by means of a bail 25 secured to the upper end of the jacket 11. 'This bail 25 is employed particularly to suspend the reservoir from a suitable hook and in case such hook is not at hand the reservoir may be suspended from a chair'by means oi a ring 26 swiveled upon the upper end of the jacket 11.
In order to till the reservoir 10 with embalu'iing fluid. the same is seated upon a suitable support with its bottom up and a sup ply tube 27 attached to the outer end of the tube 17. The other end of this supply tube 27 is then secured to'the outlet of vessel said blow vessel being operated by a suitable air compressor :29. By this consiruction it will be apparent that when the blow vessel 28 isfilled with. embalming; fluid and the air compressor 29 operated said fiuid will be discharged from the blow vessel through the tubes 27 and 17 into the interior of the reservoir 10. When a sufficient quan-' tity of fluid hasbeen stored in the reservoir the tube 27 is detached from the tube 17 5:5'3111 the reservoir invertedand suspended as ishoWn in Fig; 1 after first closing the valve Theneedle 20- is then inserted in the desired artery of the corpse-and the valve Zl'rgulated so as to permit the proper flow fo fg fluid' from the reservoir." When the dethustregulated the operationbe'cornes utjnifitiei and the body may be'left by the fliieilt1y elnba'lmed; In cases Where it is mean; to}, force the embahning fluid V gh the body by gravity alone the blow el 28"m'ay be attached to the reservoir asv v the*flovv of-fiuid from the tank.
.'What is claimed is: 1111 an apparatus of the class described, the. ',combination of a reservoir having an open lowert end; apt-removable cap disposed across theopen-iend' of tbs -reservoir, means for seperator vz'ith the assurance that it will be curing the cap to the reservoir, said means comprising a strap having one end hinged v to the reservoir and movable transversely of posed within the, reservoir and terminates a short distance from the top of the latter, While the other end thereof projects out- Wardly from the other end thereof, and an outwardly extending nipple secured to the cap and affording communication with the 40 v I interior of the reservolr. @shownm Fig. '2 and operated to accelerate In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, 1n presence of two witnesses.
