ing devices, and it consists in the constructions, combinations and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a strong and durable riveting device adapted for eflicient operation in riveting various different materials, such as leather, sheet metal, etc.
A further object of my invention is to provide a compact and simple riveting device adapted for convenient operation under many conditions in which it has been troublesome or impracticable to employ previous devices of this character.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this application, and in which similar reference symbols indicate corresponding parts in the several views :-Figure 1 is a perspective view, illustrating one embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a central, longitudinal section of the construction shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a transverse section in an axial plane of the anvil shown in Figs. 1 and 2; and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary inner-face view of one of the hinged members, illustrating a modification.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a member hinged at 2 to a cooperating member 3, and carrying an anvil 4L and a die 5; said anvil and die being screwed, or otherwise removably secured, in position to permit the ready interchange of different anvils and dies suitable for difi'erent kinds of work. A scale 6 extends along the edge of said member 1 from an axial plane of the die 5 toward the hinge joint 2, thereby providing a convenient means-for spacing the rivet joint at any desired distance from the edge of the material. The die may be omitted, if desired.
The member 3 constitutes a hammer for the anvil 4L, and is recessed at 7 on its inner face to receive a clamp 8 for holding and properly positioning punches or rivets relatively to the die 5; said clamp may be permanently attached, or may be detachably secured by screws to permit the ready attachment of clamps of different sizes.
Fig. at illustrates a modification, in which a disk clamp 9 is pivotally mounted in the recess 7 and provided with a graduated series of notches 10 for holding and properly positioning different sizes of punches or rivets relatively to the die 5.
It will be obvious that in certain classes of work, the rivets have SUl'llClGIltstrength and rigidity to act as punches for piercing the material to be riveted, while in heavier work, a usual form of punch will have to be positioned in the clamp for forming the rivet holes in the material, which latter is placed across the die 5.
I have illustrated and described preferred and satisfactory constructions, but changes could be made within the spirit and scope of my invention.
I claim 1. A riveting device comprising hinged members, a die and an anvil removably mounted on one of said members, and a clamp and hammer on the other of said members in position for cooperating with said die and anvil, respectively.
2. A riveting device comprising hinged members, a die and an anvil removably mounted on one of said members, the inner faces of the other of said members constituting a hammer for said anvil and being provided with a recess, and a clamp secured within such recess.
3. A riveting device comprising hinged members, a die on one of said members, and a clamp adjustably mounted on the other of said members and provided with a graduated series of notches for holding and properly positioning differentsizes of punches or rivets relatively to said die.
