MEANS FOR REMOVING SCALES, 860., FROM METALLIC PIPES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, 1912.
Application filed. Apri19, 1912. Serial No. 689,449.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN E. JONES, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Struthers, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Removing Scale, &c., from Metallic Pipes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. I
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in apparatus for clearing metallic pipes of scale, etc., by the forcing of plugs through the same by compressed air, the plugs being adapted to strike a target and returned through a chute to a location adjacent to the operator, affording means whereby the operator may know as to whether or not any of the plugs have been clogged within the pipe and thereby determining which, if any, of the pipes may be defective.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of my improved apparatus for removing scale from pipes. Fig. 2 is an end elevation, and Fig. 3 is a top plan view.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates racks upon which is held a series of tubes B to be cleared of any scale therein by driving plugs J through the tubes, said plugs being preferably tapering slightly and of a material which will form a bur when it comes forcibly against a target.
C designates a target box having a gong E hanging from the top F of the box and against which gong the plugs are adapted to contact and give signal to the operator that the plugs have passed through the pipes. A door H is hinged to the top F and extends over and rests upon the front apertured wall of the box. The bottom of said box is inclined and a chute I, positioned at an inclination, leads from the lower portion of the inclined bottom of the box back to a location underneath the ends of the pipes to which the pneumatic tube N is connected and which supplies the air under pressure for driving the plugs J which are circularoutlined and preferably flat faced, through the pipes to be cleaned.
In operation, the series of pipes to be cleaned are arranged side by side and a circular plug J inserted in each of the same, after which connection is made with the pneumatic pipes N and a high pressure of air allowed to be exerted upon the plugs, thus forcibly driving the same through the pipes and thereby clearing scale or other obstructions from the inner surface thereof. The plugs coming against the target will fall down to the inclined bottom of the box, thence through the plug chute, back to the floor level within convenient reach of the operator who may see by the return of the plugs as to whether or not any one of the same may have been clogged within the pipe. If so, the defect causing the clogging may be remedied.
By the provision of an apparatus embodying the features of my invention, I have found that a single operator may effectually clear the scale and obstructions from a much greater number of pipes of various diameters than would be possible by apparatus now employed for the same purpose with a greater operating force.
While the plugs which are used in clearing the scale will lose somewhat in diameter by being driven through the pipes, still this is compensated for by the impact of the plug against the target which will tend to slightly bur the plug, making it still better for use again for the same purpose.
By the employment of my improved method of removing scale from pipes, the inner surface of the pipe will be thoroughly cleared of all obstructions, rendering the pipes suitable for various conduit purposes.
What I claim to be new is An apparatus for removing scale from pipes comprising a series of pipes, and plugs Wear incident to their being forced through adapted to be projected through said pipes, a the tubes, as set forth. 10 target adapted to be positioned in advance In testimony whereof I hereunto afliX my of a series of tubes and spaced apart theresignature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
