HEAD-GATE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ELISHA T. GREEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thatcher, in the county of Graham and State of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Head-Grates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in head gates.

An object of this invention is the provision of a device of this character which may be placed at any desired point along the banks of a stream for the purpose of hindering the progress of the water, thereby fiooding the fields adjacent the stream.

Another object of this invention is the provision of a dam, which consists of an upper supporting member, to which are secured a series of adjustable stakes, which may be regulated for the purpose of engaging the bed of a stream, conforming themselves to the irregularity of the channel.

Another object of this invention is to improve and simplify devices of this character, rendering them comparatively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, reliable and eflicient in use, and readily operated.

With the above and other objects in view, this invention resides in the novel features of construction, formations, combinations and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a front elevation of my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1 showing the head gate as applied.

Referring to the drawings by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates generally my improved head gate, which consists of an upper supporting member 2, comprising a pair of spaced parallel bars 3, connected at their opposite ends as indicated by the numerals 4. The intermediate portions of the side members 3 have secured therebetween a pair of downwardly converging bars 5, connected at their upper ends to the said side bars 3 by means of bolts -6 or other suitable fastening means, and at their lower ends by a strap 7 In order to further brace these bars 5, the intermediate Specification of Letters Patent.

portions thereof are connected by straps 8, which serve to hold the same rigidly with respect to each other. A vertical bar 9 is secured between the ends of the bars 5 and to the side bars 3 in any desirable manner which will hold the same rigidly, for a purpose to be hereinafter more particularly described. A series of stakes 10, provided at their upper ends with heads 11, are slidably located between the side bars 3, and are secured to each other and to the downwardly converging bars 5 by means of links 12,

which permit any desired vertical or lateral movement of the said stakes, which are held against displacement from the bars 3 means of the before-described heads 11.

When it is desired to flood a stream for any desired purpose, the opposite ends of the supporting member 2 are placed upon the opposite banks of the stream and the ends of the stakes 10 rest on the bed of the stream, the irregularities of'which are overcome by the adjustable action of the stakes with the side bars 3 and converging bars 5. After the device is securely embedded in the stream, any desired objects may be placed above the said device which will serve to hinder the progress of the water and cause the stream to overflow. It should be observed that any desired objects may be'used which will. answer this purpose, but I preferably employ a strip of canvas or other suitable flexible material (not shown in the drawing), which may be secured to the lower ends of the stakes by means of cables or the like, which are slidably mounted upon the lower terminals of the said stakes and serve to provide a means whereby the said canvas may be forced downwardly into its proper position.

In order to further brace the head gate, a block 14 is secured centrally to one side of the support 2 and forms a bearing, through the instrumentality of an eye, for the truss rod 13 which extends from each end of the support 2, the terminals of said truss rod being bent and passed through the support 2 aforesaid and secured by nuts operating thereon.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be readily seen that a portable dam is provided which may be of any length to suit any size ditch or channel and it is to be understood that other minor details of construction may be resorted to that come within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus fully described this invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:

1. In a head gate, the combination with a horizontal supporting member, of a vertical support rigidly secured to said horizontal supporting member, a plurality of vertical stakes slidably connected to said horizontal supporting member on each side of said. vertical support and means whereby said vertical stakes are individually pivoted to each other and pivoted to said vertical support.

2. A dam of the nature described comprising asupporting member consisting of spaced parallel side bars connected at their opposite ends, downwardly converging bars interposed between the side members and rigidly secured therebetween, stakes slidably located between said side bars, heads formed upon the stakes for preventing the downward displacement of the same, and links adjustably connecting the stakes with each other and with the downwardly con- 1 verging bars, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

3. In a head gate, the combination with a support comprising a pair of horizontal spaced members, of a central vertical support secured to said horizontal support, converging braces extending from said horizontal support to the lower terminal of said vertical support, a plurality of vertical stakes slidably mounted between the members of said horizontal support, on each side of said vertical support, and means whereby the lower terminals of said stakes are individually pivoted together.

4:. In a head gate, the combination with a support comprising a pair of horizontal spaced members, of a central vertical support secured to said horizontal support, converging braces extending from said horizontal support to the lower terminal of said vertical support, a plurality of vertical stakes slida-bly mounted between the members of said horizontal support, on each side of said vertical support, and links pivotally connected to each set of vertical stakes on each side of said vertical support to the latter.
