MACHINE FOR PRESSING LIQUIDS FROM MATERIALS CONTAINING THE SAME.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THEODOR FRANKE, a subject of the German Emperor, and residing at WVartburgstrasse 24, Schoneberg, Berlin, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Machines for Pressing Liquids from Materials Containing the Same, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines or presses for pressing liquids, for example water, from materials, for example peat, containing the same, and in particular to machines of the well-known type comprising a compressing chamber having walls provided with strainers for enabling the liquid to escape from the material while being compressed in the chamber.
The invention consists in certain improvements, the objects of which are to render such machines more efficient than hitherto in the expulsion of the liquid and to improve their construction.
One improvement consists in the provision of the strainers with teeth, the purpose of which is to tear up and open the smooth outer surfaces of the material while it is being compressed so as to facilitate the flow of the liquid through the outer layer of the material which when the well-known wire gauze strainers are used offers great resistance to the outward flow of the liquid on account of the said outer layer being of a mud-like or pulp-like nature caused by the deposition of fine particles carried by the liquid expelled at the commencement of the compressing operation.
Another improvement consists in the pro vision of piston packing rings in the form of elastic metallic wires for the purpose of satisfactorily packing the pistons in compression chambers fitted with strainers provided with the above-mentioned teeth.
Other improvements consist in the concentric arrangement of the strainers in the compressing chamber, in the provision of strainers with unperforated cores preventing liquid from flowing through the strainers from one side to the other; and in other improvements hereinafter described and claimed.
A machine embodying the improvements according to the invention is illustrated, by way of example, in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a part sectional elevation of Specification of Letters Patent.

Referring in the first place to Fig. 1
which shows the positions of the various ton being circular and the two other pistons annular; 5 the compression chamber wall; 6, 6 cylindrical strainers concentric with said chamber; 7, 7 the two halves of the cover; 8 a detachable cross-head; 9, 9 pillars supporting the latter, and 10, 10 bars supporting the compression chamber and cylindrical strainers- 11,11 are the horizontal strainers on the upper surfaces of the pistons, while 12 is the compressed material and 13, 13 combustible horizontal partitions of wood, paper, pasteboard or other suitable combustible substance embedded in said material.
The construction of the two inner strainers is illustrated in Fig. 8 in which 14 is an unperforated core preferably of corrugated sheet metal; 15, 15 two layers of coarse wire gauze, one on each side of said core 14; 16, 16 two layers of less coarse Wire gauze, one at the outerside of each layer 15, and 17, 17 two outer sheets of perforated sheet metal provided with teeth. If desired, the layers 15, 15, 16, 16 may be omitted, as shown in Fig. 9. Teeth of the preferred form are shown to a much enlarged scale in Figs. 10 and 11, in which 18, 18, 18 are three teeth formed by punching a hole in the sheet- 17. Said teeth 18 preferably project toward one another over the hole to prevent the material to be compressed from passing therethrough, while allowing the liquid to escape. Strainers of the above construct-ion are double-acting, that is, each side acts as a separate strainer.
The. outer Cylindrical strainer and the strainers on the upper surfaces of the pistons may consist of one toothed perforated sheet 17 two sheets of wire gauze 16, 15 and a corrugated sheet 14. Such strainers are single acting, that is, only one side acts as a strainer. The concentric arrangement of the strainers 6, 6 is clear from Figs. 1 and 2. The top edges of the intermediate strainer is provided with recesses 19, 19 in which the bars 20, 20 forming the bottom of the cylindrical hopper 21, Figs. 3 and 3 rest when the hop per is placed on the compression chamber. Said bars 20 are provided with corresponding recesses 22, 22 and at the center of the bars there is a ring 23 which fits into the top of the innermost strainer.
Figs. 1 and 5 illustrate a set of knives which can be inserted inside the compression chamber if desired. Said set consist of eight blades and each blade contains a recess 24 to enable the blades to fit over the top edge of the intermediate strainer 6. The distance from the cutting edge 26 of each blade to the back edge 2-7 of the same is only slightly less than the thickness of the material when finally compressed.
The construction of the packing of the pistons is illustrated in detail in Figs. 6, 7. The edges of the pistons are furnished with packing rings 28, 28 comprising elastic metallic wires 29, 29 preferably of hardened steel. Said rings are similar in construction to the well-known wire brushes or scratch-brushes but the wires preferably project out from the narrower edges as shown clearly in Fig. 7 in which 11 is a single-acting strainer.
In Fig. 12 pistons provided with conical single-acting strainers 30, 30 are illustrated, which are fixed on the upper surfaces of said pistons.
The mode of operation of the machine is as follows :-The ram 2 being in its lowermost position, the cross-head 8 is removed and the half-covers 7, 7 opened by turning them about the pillars 9, 9. The hopper 21 is placed on the top edges of the cylindrical strainers 6, 6 and holds them in position while the material is filled in, combustible partitions being inserted at intervals if desired. The hopper is then removed and, if desired, the set of knives shown in Figs. 4 and 5 is placed over the top edges of the cylindrical strainers 6, 6. The half-covers are then closed and the cross-head secured over them. The compressing operation then commences. 18 on the strainers continually tear open the During this operation the teeth,
surfaces of the material so that the liquid escapes readily therefrom. On the completion of the compressing operation the compressed material is removed, the ram is returned to its initial position and the operation is repeated.
\Vhat I claim as my invention and desire tosecure by Letters Patent is 1. A machine of the type specified for pressing liquids from material containing the same, comprising in combination a compression chamber for containing the material to be treated, strainers arranged in said chamber and provided with teeth projecting into said chamber and pistons for compressing said material.
2. A machine of the type specified for pressing liquids from materials containing the same, comprising in combination a compression chamber for containing the material to be treated, strainers comprising perforated sheet metal provided with teeth projecting into said chamber, and pistons for compressing said material.
3. A machine of the type specified for pressing liquids from materials containing the same, comprising in combination a compression chamber for containing the material to be treated, strainers comprising sheet metal having perforations bordered with teeth projecting over the perforations and into said chamber and pistons for compressing said material.
4. A machine of the type specified for pressing liquids from materials containing the same, comprising in combination a com pression chamber for containing the mate rial to be treated, strainers comprising a corrugated piece of sheet metal and perforated sheet metal provided with teeth projecting into said chamber and pistons for compressing said material.
5. A machine of the type specified for pressing liquids from materials containing the same, comprising in combination a compression chamber for containing the material to be treated, strainers comprising an unperforated core and perforated sheet metal on each side of said core, said perforated sheet metal being provided with teeth projecting into said chamber and pistons for compressing said material.
6. A machine of the type specified for pressing liquids from materials containing the same, comprising in combination a compression chamber for containing the material to be treated, strainers comprising an inner corrugated piece of sheet metal, a sheet of wire gauze on each side of said sheet metal and perforated sheet metal on the outer side of each of said sheets of wire gauze, said perforated sheet metal being provided with teeth projecting into said.
7. A machine of the type specified for pressing liquids from materials containing the same, comprising in combination a cylindrical compression chamber for containing the material to be treated, cylindrical strainers arranged concentrically in said chamber and provided with teeth projecting into said chamber and pistons for compressing said material.
8. A machine of the type specified for pressing liquids from materials containing the same, comprising in combination a cylindrical compression chamber for containing the material to be treated, cylindrical strainers arranged concentrically in said chamber, said strainers comprising a corrugated cylinder of sheet metal and perforated sheet metal on each side of said corrugated sheet, said perforated sheet metal being provided with teeth projecting into said chamber and pistons for compressing said material.
9. A machine of the type specified :Eor pressing liquids from materials containing the same, comprising in combination a compression chamber containing the material to be treated, strainers arranged in said chamber and provided With teeth projecting into said chamber and pistons for compressing said material, said pistons being provided With packing-rings comprising elastic metal Wire.
10. A machine of the type specified for pressing liquids from materials containing the same, comprising in combination a compression chamber containing the material to be treated, strainers arranged in said chamber and provided Withteeth projecting int-o said chamber and pistons for compressing said material, said pistons being provided with packing-rings comprising hardened steel Wire.
11. A machine of the type specified for pressing liquids from materials containing the same, comprising incombination a compression chamber for containing the material to be treated, strainers arranged in said chamber and provided With teeth projecting into said chamber, pistons for compressing said material, and a hopper provided With a bottom engaging the tops of said strainers.
12. A machine of the type specified for pressing liquids from materials containing the same, comprising in combination a compression chamber for containing the material to be treated, strainers arranged in said chamber and provided With teeth projecting into said chamber, pistons for compressing said material, and a hopper provided With a bottom having bars With recesses in Which the top edges of said strainers engage.
13. A machine of the type specified for pressing liquids from materials containing the same, comprising in combination a compression chamber for containing the material to be treated, strainers arranged in said chamber and provided With teeth projecting into said chamber, a plurality of knives in said chamber, and pistons for compressing said material.
14. A machine of the type specified for pressing liquids from materials containing the same, comprising in combination a compression chamber containing the material to be treated, strainers arranged in said chamber and provided With teeth projecting into said chamber, a plurality of knives detachably arranged in said chamber and on the tops of said strainers, and pistons for compressing said material.
15. A machine of the type specified for pressing liquids from materials containing the same, comprising in combination a compression chamber for containing the material to be treated, strainers arranged in said chamber and provided with teeth projecting into said chamber and pistons for compressing said material.
16. A machine of the type specified for pressing liquids from materials containing the same, comprising in combination a compression chamber for containing the material to be treated, strainers arranged in said chamber and provided With teeth projecting into said chamber and pistons for compressing said material, said pistons being provided With conical strainers having teeth projecting into said chamber.
