Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, 1912.
Application filed February 2, 1912. Serial No. 675,052.
To all whom if may concern:
Be it known that I, REAUBY CHASTEEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thorsby, in the county of Chilton and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Churns, of which the following is a specication.
The invention relates to churns, and more particularly to the class of mechanism for operating vertically movable dasher churns.
The primary obj ect of the invention is the provision of mechanism of this character in which the dasher in a churn body may be vertically reciprocated for effecting the churning of the contents of the churn, for the formation of butter.
Another object of the invention is the provision of mechanism of this character which is simple in construction, easily operated, and inexpensive in manufacture.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illust-rated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended. In the drawings: Figure l is a side elevation of a churn body, showing the operating mechanism connected therewith. Fig. 2 is a top plan View of the same. Fig. 3 is an end elevation.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 5 designates the body of a churn of any ordinary wellknown construction, and 6 the vertically movable dasher shaft, carrying the usual dasher (not shown), and adapted to be reciprocated within the churn body, and to this dasher shaft is adapted to be connected the operating mechanism, presently described.
The dasher shaft operating mechanism comprises a base frame 7, from the forward end of which rises a centrally disposed vertical standard or post 8, to which is connected upwardly converging braces 9, the same being also connected to the base frame, thereby materially strengthening the post. Spaced from the rear or opposite end of the base frame 7 and connected thereto are upwardly converging props l0, the same being connected to the rear end of a longitudinally slotted guide bar 11 disposed horizontally above the base frame, and also connected to the post 8 and working within the slot in the said guide bar 11 is an operating lever l2, connected to one end of a walking beam 13, the same mo-unted upon a pivot 14; which adjustably connects it to the post 8, the free end of the walking beam 13 carrying a socketed member or ferrule 15, in which is detachably connected the upper end of the v dasher shaft 6 in any suitable manner. The ferrule 15 is formed with upturned alining ears 16, through which is passed a pivot pin 17, the same being also passed through the walking beam 13, thereby connecting the ferrule to the same.
Mounted upon the base frame 7, rearwardly of the props 10, are bearings 18, in which are j ournaled the ends of a rocking shaft 19, to which is fixed a foot treadle 20 formed with an extension 21 provided with a bifurcation 22 receiving the operating lever l2 which is provided with a series of apertures 23, in any one of which is adapted to detachably engage a pivot pin 24, the same being detachably mounted in the bifurcated end of the extension 21 on the foot t-readle, it being seen that upon actuating the foot treadle 20, the walking beam 13 will be rocked upon the post 8, thereby actuating the dasher in the churn.
