Description

Janina sans" A DOLPH BRASE ANDLEMUELSALLADEY, OF SOIOTOVILLE, OHIO.
y y Letters Patent No. 103,134,1clatod Muy 17, 18,70.
" REVQLVING @RATE PoR FIRE-PLAGES;
Schedule referred to in these Letters- Patent and making part of the'same.
To all whole/it may concern: 5
Be it known that we, ADOLPH BRAsE and LEMUEL SALLADEY, of Sciotoville, `in 'the count-y of Scioto and State of Ohio, have invented a new and `u'sefulImprovement m Revolving Grate; and we do` hereby declare that thefollowing is a `full,"clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the artto make and useythe same, ,reference being had to thei accompanying drawingforming part of this speciy tication. v A t .Figure 1 is atop view of vour improved revolving grate.
Figure 2 isa front view of the same. l y Figure 31s a vertical cross-section of the same, taken in the line a: :afl-ig. 2.
Figure 4 is a detail sectional view of a modified form ofthe saine.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. l
-1 `Our invention has .for `its object to furnish an im provedfire-place giate, fwliieh shall be so constructed that it may berevolved orturned into the chimney or4 Yinto the next room, and which shall have a fire-hoard formed upon its rear side or end, which may be turned out when no fireA is required without removing the Itc'onsists in the revolving` 'grat-e, whether made, single or double, iandi` having a surface formed 'upon its rear side or ends, to serve as ,a fire-board, as hereinafter more fully described.
A'are the grates, which are made iu the'ordinary manner, 'and which arehung in a frame-work or cas. `ing, B, in the'isame manner ns'ordinary `grates are hung ina. lire-place.`
The frame-work or casingfB is securely attached to `a vertical shaft, O, theilower end oi'whiclr-revolves in -a step, D, formed in or attached to the. lower part of g Vthedire-place, or. attached to' a bar or frame-work placed iu the lower part of said lire-place.
v The upper end of the shaft O revolves in bearings' in a bar or frame-work, E, placed in the upper part of the lire-place. Y
When a fire-place isin alpartition-wallof a house, thelframe orcasing Bis made with a grate upon the y opposite sides, as shown in ligs; land 3, sothat a lire may be made in each grate at the same time,or a fire purposes set forth.
may be made in one grate, and, after one room* has heen heated, it may be revolved into the other room to heat it. 'lhis construction also enables a tire to be Vmade in the grate and revolved into the room to be heated, -or the .grate may be revolved to enable a fire to be replenished without its being necessary for the attendant to'enter theroom or disturb those who may- Vbe in said room.
In the case of a fire-place in the side-wall of 4a house,
the revolving grate A B may be made with a single grate, as shown iu lig. 4.
YThe end partsof the frame or casing B, in the case of a double grate, and the rear side of said casing in the case of a single gra-te, are so formed that, when the double grate is turned one-quarter around, and. the single grate one-half around, the end or side thus v exposed will serve'as a iire-board or summer-piece,
thus keeping the grate ready for a fire 'when required Aupon chilly or damp days.
By this construction, when the fire is first made, the gra-te mayfbe turned inward until it has become fully kind-led'to prevent the sparks from flying out, and
thus'avoidingthe necessity and expense of tire-screens or fenders. v
ABy this construction, also, when it is necessary to leave children alone in the' room, the grate may be turned inward and locked, so that it will be impossible for them to set themselves on lire, and, at the same time,4 heat will be radiated into the, room from the end or rear side ofthe grate.
The grates are provided with ash-puns, F, in theV ordinary manner.
Having thus described our invention,
XVe claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl An improved revolving grate, A B, whether made single or double, provided upon its rear side or ends with a surface adapted to serve as a lire-board, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the *ADOLPH enlise. LnMUnL sALLADnY.
