Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, 1912.
Application 'ted March 11, 1905. Serial No. 420,394.
To all whom Lt may conce/vt:
Be it known that I, Smit/ni. 0. EnMoNns. a citizen of the United States. residing in the borough ot' Manhattan. in the city, county, and State of New York. have invented a certain new and useful lniprovement in Printing-Maritines. o whieh the following is a. specification.
This invention relates: to printing.: machines for printing multiple eopies ot letters, circulars and the like.
The invention is direrted to the priwision of a printing tnarhine t'or otlif'e use. which is small. eompaet and inexpeuf-iw to manutat'ture. which may be run by an unskilled operator and which is Capable of printing in imitation of typewritten work.
ln art-ordanee with the invention. a pagetorm ot' type is employed. with which a roller eoaets to effect the printing, this roller being either a n'essure-roller or a eomtiined pressurean platetnroller, The inking is etfeeted by an ink-ribbon, wliirh passes between the printing fares of the tvpe andthe impreasion-sheet, the ends or' this ribbon being preferably earir-il on spools mounted at opposite sides ot' the page-form of type and intermittently rotated automatically duringT the operation of the machine, in order to present new surfaees for sueeeasive, impressions. sima with aneh an inl -ribhon results are obtained whit'h are in close simulation of t, \'pe\\rit, ten work. The preasnre'roller above mentioned is arranged to ha ve a movement in a straight line to ettert the printing, and then to be moved haelt to its original position while out of t-operatit'e relation to the type. ln order to malte the maehine more eompaot. the pressn|'e-roller is preferably moved to eti'eet the printing on one side ot' the page-form of type and is then Carried to the other side of the page-form t'or ita l return movement, sufh movement ot' the roller being' preferably eti'eeted by monnb i ing the roller on chains which travel over sprorket-wheels arranged one pair at eaeh t end of the page-form ot type. To inerease the capacity o't the maehine. two pressurerollers may be so mounted upon asingie `pair of chains, so that while one roller is ranking theifreturn movement to its initial pitiibmiith the machine tlhns constructrun on the eorresi'ionding sprockets r' l l printing upon a sheety the other roller is l l.
ed, there is preferably combined suitable. sheet-feeding apparatus. whieh may hepartiallv or entirely automatie in its operation, in order to inoltre tht` proper feeding' ot' the xsheets` so that the impressionsv reeeivetl therebyv will be iu the desired position upon the sheets. Also. delivery merlianism may be employed tor removing the sheets as soon as the impressions are received thereby. this mechanism lit-ingr pret`erabl \v entirely automatie.
My invention is illustrated in the awt-oms panying' drawings. m whit-hdr Figure 1 is a longitudinal yertion ot' the mat-hint: Fig. 2 is a transverse sertion ot' the same: Fig. 3 is' a plan View ot' the maehine broken awa)v and seetioned in part; Figs. 4. 5 and (i are views similar to Figs. l. '.2 and 3. respeetivelv. illustrating a moditit-ation: and Figs. T. 9 and 9 are views similar to Figs. l, and it. illustrating a further moditieation.
Referring first to Figs. l. i? and l. the maehine ronaists of a base on whit-h are mounted .side-frames A and these sidetrames` haring a support li seriurd thereto. tor a page-form of type. ln the drawings. l hare shown a (hase lorlred upon the support FS by bolts passingthrough thrrtded openings in oti'sets /s` ou support l. this rhase l being provided with a phu'ality. ot' parallel .slots or type-eltannels to rereiw the type lf.
:isslio'wn in Figa] andi. lixtendingbetween the side-fl'ai'ues and mounted tot' rotation in bearings therein. are two shafts t`. t". these .shafts bein;r lot-ated adjatent to the opposite ends of the support B. Shaft is extended at one ond through the side traine .X2 and Carries' an operating hanillel r by which the .shaft may he rotated. Fiaeli ot the shafts and C" has two sproeloit-wlu-els f" seem-ed thereon adjacent to the sidefratnes A'. .\2. and rhaine e. Fi
on the twoshafts C, C'. as shown in Fig. il. Two ot the links t in eaeh of the Chains if, e3. are formed to provide bearings for their-nds of shafts d, d', whieh extend bet een the two chains and are rotatably earried thereby. The shaft: d carries a pressure-roller D, and the shaft d a. ySmilar pressure-roller D. At each end,r each of the shafts d, si, is extended through its,
bearing and Carries a gear d2 which is of the frames A A2.
it will thus he seen tibet hy rotating the operating .handle c, the shaft i (i und the sprockets thereon, together with the shaft C and the sprockets thereon` wili i he rntded, causing movement of the (chains il'. l and the rotatable rollers D, D, eerried thereby: that this niovemei'it of the chains causes the rollers D, D', to more periodienil)v over the upper face of the page form of type :ind to he then returned hea neath the page-forni of type; and; that dun ing the movement of each roiler (wer the page-forni of type that roller xviii he pori tively rotated, due to the eozvtion o? the gear d2, corresponding to that ruiter, wi' the rack fla. i. desired, reei; muy i considendilj7 shorter than it is shown o i,
e as the positive rotation of the roller at .s ecial utility oniy when the o oactiim of tie roller with the printing fates of the type begins. it
When the pressureroilers D, U" :ire p: ing over the type and eiieet.in`y the prnti. of an impression, Athey are he d. ng'einst ing from the type so theithe entire inap; ii sion is uniformly printed, Fer this inn'. ose, cams l'i`, ii" are secured to the rames A', A2, directly over the haies These cams enact `with the bearing y for shafts d, t, and as the operntie surfer,
ni' these cams are perfectly straight, the hein in s c4, together with the shafts n', nf'i und ro ers D, D carried thereby, innst :new in a straight `iine while enacting with ti i prim ing faces of the type. The eine@ ij. if', in
preferably adjustable veitieaiiy, in order te permit of regulating the pressure o tithe roilers D, D', upon the impro iones-hert. this purpose, each of the sidwfmnws A. Sirf, is rovided with tno ottsen f, j",
die e im?! bi urcated as shown in Fig. to zv thumb-nut f2 between the iwi;
wrm thereof. Each of the infinis I", if', iwf threaded studs f* extending u pwsirdly th re from and passing through the opening.. in the oii'sets f, f" and the threaded openings in the nuts f2. Thus, by turning the nets; the vertical positions of the earns F, F', may be adjusted as desired. YVhen the desired position of these earns has been reached, they may be locked against further move'- ment by lockalnts f.
An ink-ribbon E, of a 'width siiliiient. to overlie the entire page-form of type, is arranged to extend over the printing hires of the type, as shown in Fig. Q, the ends of this ribbon being carried by spools e. During the printing operation, this ribbon is fed 8,1011? in the direction of its length in any suitab e manner, so as to present new surfaces for the 'printing of successive firm pressions. `This ribbon-feeding mechanism `of 'the ehnins c2,
, opposii these f-f nits, the inivrihbnn E is carried sheet i s not dlnsiraied in detail, as any suiinhhI nef-h: n muy he employed for this pui'v *this mechanism preiernbiy including n mi .et U'lieei f" on the end of em'h of thi` sposti i nd :i pziwi r enacting with thisl rstnhei. At its opposite end, shaft 'carries a'bevel-gear 2'* meshing with a bevelr z" secured to a sectional sheet-feeding roll J. This roll J is mounted for rotation in bearings formed in frame-pieces j which are secured to opposite edges of the fecdboard H. The upper surface of the sections `of roll J is flush with the upper surface of the feed-board H, and the sections of this roll are adapted to conct with similar s 4,.
tions on a feed-roll J directly overlying t ie roll J and similarly mounted Vtoi' rotation in bearings formed in the 'tramepieces j. Rolls J and J are geared together bv genre: lt will thus be seen that during the operation of the machine the feed-rolls J, J" are continuously rotated, so that if the. edge ot' a sheet is4 inserted' between these feed-rolls ,t ha t `sheet will be fed forwardly. A guide j? is mountn ed upon the frame-pieces y' opposite the line of coaction of the fetal-rolls J, J", and so arranged that when the sheet is fed forward by these rolls it will be curled downwardly by the guide ,7'2 and caused to move over the*y type-form and the ink-ribbon overlying the same.
In order to insure the feed of the impres-` sion-sheets at the proper times with refer- A ence to the positions of the other' parts of feed-board.
the rolls J, J', and the edge of thesheet is gripped by the rolls, whereupon the tin ers are again separated to release the sheet. he upper gripping-lingers are pivotally connected at It to a bar la underlying the feedi board H, and the lower gripping-fingers It" are Secured to this bar lr, openings beingV below shaft Z and is connected by a link l to the upper end of a lever lt loosely mounted upon the'shaft la. T he lower end of lever I2 extends downwardly from shaft fi and reacts with s cam l secured upon the shaft fait. A, 'spring l acts on lever Z2 in a direction to hold its lower end in contact with the periphery of cem l5. Thus, as shaft h3 rotates, the cam h2 thereon permits the feed-board H to turn to the op-v erative position, in which it is shown in full lines` in Fig. l, and iminedistel?14 thereafter the cam Z 'operates lever l* an 4link Z to roelsthe levers L about their pivots in a direction lo carry the upper ends 0 those levers to the right in FigA l. This movement of the upper ends of'levers L and thetrunnons l mirried thereby tirstfceuses the upper grippingiingers il' tok turn about the pivotal connection k2 until the ends of the upper grippingefingers r come down upon a sheet and grip the sheet between them and the lower gripping-fingers k. lSince the further turning movement of the gripping- One of the levers L is extended MNAi lingers about the pivotal connection Inglis then precluded, the further movement of the upper ends of levers L to the right in Fig. l. causes the upper gripping-fingers Ir, the bar 1 to which they are connected, andthe lower grippingiingers It" which are secured to har 13, to move bodily tothe right and to carry with them the sheet which 1s gripped between the two ,sets of lingers, until the edge of this sheet is gripped by thc feedrolls J, J. The mechanism tor feeding the sheets into position for print.- ing 11111),y he the same as that illustrated in Figs. l. 2 and 3, including a pair of sectional shee'bteeding rollers J, J and gripping fingers if, 1l". but this sheet-feeding mechanism is difi'ereutly arranged. As shown in- Fig. .4. the sheetfeeding mechanism is mounted upon the side frames A', A2 at one end of the xnaehine so that its forward edge overlies the operating shaft C. -Th e feed-boardY `H of this sheet-feeding device is stationarily mounted and its lower edge lies above the path of movement of the pressure rollers D, D. The sheet-feeding rollers J, J are continuously rotated during the operationof the machine by gears fm, m connecting the l thereof, that the feed-board and the sheetroller J with a gear nl mounted on shalt C. i leedlug device mounted thereon are statlonary instead of having a movement about No means are illustrated for rocking levers L on the shal't but this rocking niove- I ment of the levers in order to actuate the gripping lingers may be elleeted in any suit able manner from the power shaft. C. When the Vforward edge ol) the sheet is inserted between the slnret-leeding rollers J, .V by
the gripping lingers t', /.,i the sheet is fed t'orwardl by those rollers and ils tornard edge drops down upon ink ribbon E overlying the printing faces of the type and moves over the saine until arrested by a paper stop; as this occurs the rear edge of the sheet is released by the feed rollers I, J and drops down upon the inl; ribbon. The paper stop N is movably mounted and ar'- ranged to hold the sheet in position upon the type at the time when the pressure roller comes into contact with the sheet. Stop preferably eol'lsists of a sheet metal strip pivotally mounted upon the edge of the support P for the type or the` olisets Z thereon, and a spring is arranged to act on plate N in a direction to hold the plate always in a vertical position. l horizontally disposed strip n may also be secured upon the oil'sets b in such position that when the stop N is turned about' its pivot to a horizontal position, the'v sheet whose edge has been carried into Contact with the stop N will be gripped between the stop and strip a. This gripping of the sheet is effected as soon as one of the pressure-rollers D, D comes around to the/printing position. As the roller engages the stop N, it turns it about its pivot against the tension of its spring to the position in which the stop grips the edge of the sheet. Stop N thus holds the sheet in position until the pressure roller cornes into coaction with the sheet and the printing operation starts, whereupon the stop is released by the pressure roller and is turned by its spring to the vertical position so that it will arrest the next sheet to be fed forward by the sheet-feeding device.
The sheets which have been printed upon may be removed by stripping lingers G mounted on the chains c2, 03 as above dcscribed in connection with Figs. '1 to 3. To guide the sheet as it is being moved thus, a. strip g2 may be mounted upon the typesupport B at the end opposite thaton which the paper stop N is mounted, this plate g2 serving to support the printed sheet as it is being removed from the type so that the sheet will fall properly into the deliverytray g'.
The operation of the 'machine above described is similar to that described in connection WithliFigs. l to 8; it will be noted, however,` that the sheets are fed into and delivered from the machine at the same end A stationarily mounted i a pivot, that the sheets are fed directly to the printing position instead of being guided over a curved path. that a stop is arranged to arrest the movement otl the sheets when the latter have reached the proper position and that this stop grips the sheet holding ity while the printing operation starts.
The machine illustrated in l1`igs. 7. 8 and El dili'ers from those above described principally in that the type are arranged with their printing faces downward as this arrangement of the type ollers the advantage that the opposite ends thereof may be provided with display faces so that the matter set up may be read and errors more readily detected. The chase [.1 is provided with a plurality ot' rhannels into which the type o@ may be dropped, these type being provided with shouhlers to coaet with the channel bars of the chase to limit the downward movement of the type. The members of the cha are provided with flanges which coact with bars t extending between the side frames A", A2 to support the chase. A pad b5 of yielding material is laid over the upper ends of the type as shown, the upper surface of this pad being above the upper surfaces of the chase .7 and bars b4. The platen B is arranged beneath the type and is adapted to be lnoved vertically upward to operative position after a sheet has been fed between the platen and the ink ribbon E underlying the printing faces of the type. F or this purpose the platen is carried by two airs of arms O, each of which is bifurcate and the arms of the several pairs straddle shafts o, 0 extendin between the side-frames of the machine am mounted for rotation therein. On each of the arms O is a roller o2 adapted to eoact with a cam 03 secured upon the shafts 0, o. The shafts o, o are extended through their bearings on one side of the machine as shown in Fig. S and carry gears 0*, these gears being driven from a gear on the power shaft C. This shaft and the shaft C carry sprockets on which two pairs of chains run, as above described, and these chains carry rollers D, D, the rollers in this case being pressure rollers only, instead of combined pressure and platen rollers as in the ease of the machines above described. The bearings for rollers D, D, coact with cams F, F so that the movement of the rollers while in eoaction with the type is in a straight line, and each roller is preferably provided with a gear which, during the printing /niovemenh meshes with a rack d3 mounted on the sideframes AV A21 The ink ribbon E extends beneath the type so that it directly underlies the printing faces thereof and the spools carrying the ends of this ribbon are mountt roi-J niet iluL pinten. the elige et the sheet linger if :nlupleii to ne rrriproruimi ivi insert the ewige ot n lmet iietwreu tin ,irtio'nul 'ferri ioit\.
