This invention relates to gates and more particularly to'balanced gates.
The object of the invention is the provision of a lgate which may be conveniently and easily operated and whose structure is such that it will not readily get out of order and constantly need repairs as do many of the gates in present use.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of novel means for mounting the gate and for securing its counter-weight in position.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following specific description is read in connection with the accompanyingY drawing which forms a part of this application, and in which:

Referring more particularly to the drawing 1 and 2 and 3 and tV represent separate pairs of posts which are connected together' by the cross pieces 5 and 6 and between which the gate proper 7 is adapted to operate. The cross pieces 5 and 6 carry the bearings 8 in which thev pivoting shaft 9 is adapted to rotate. The gate 7 comprises the U-shaped body 10, the legs of which are connected together by the T-couplings 11 and the cross pieces 12 which are joined in their center by the T-coupling 13. The opposite end of the T-couplings 1l to which the legs of the U-shaped member 10 is connected have secured therein the extension sections 14 and the leg of the T-coupling 13 has secured therein the cross bar 15. The opposite end of the extension section 14 to that which is secured to the coupling 11 has connected thereto the T-couplings 16 and communicating with the opposite side of the couplings 16 is a circular section 17 which has a T- coupling 18 arranged in its center to receive a cross piece 19 which communicates or connects with the section 15 by means of the opposite nipples on the cross couplings 20. The vertical nipples of the cross couplings 20 have secured thereto the cross pieces 21 which connect at their opposite ends with the legs of the T-couplings 1G.` The cross coupling is provided with lateral extensions 22 which surround or receive the bearing shaft 9.
The cross piece 19 has slidably mounted thereon a flanged collar 23 which is adapted to engage and hold in position against the curved sections 17, the counter-weight 24 which is mounted upon the cross piece 19 and is grooved in its ends as shown at 9.5 to receive the sections 17. The collar 23 is preferably held in operative position against the weight by means of a cutter pin 957 and the weight 24. is further held against the section 17 by clips 28 which are secured to said sections in any suitable manner. The space formed between the legs 10 of the U- shaped member, its yoke end 29 and the cross pieces 19., is covered by a suitable woven fabric 30 and the space between the pairs of posts 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 is covered by a suitable fabric 31. Arranged upon opposite sides of the yoke end 29 are latching posts 32 which are provided with laterally projecting lugs 33 adapted to be engaged by the spring catch 341 which is retracted by the handles 35 on either side of the gate so as to permit the gate to be raised. The weight 24: exactly balances the forward portion of the gate beyond the pivoting shaft and therefore the slightest upward pressure upon the forward portion of the gate will cause it to travel to vertical position and the slightest downward pressure upon the forward portion of the gate when open, will cause it to travel to fully closed position. It will be noticed that in a gate of this character the forward portion thereof may be held slightly raised in any suitable manner as by a supplemental spring catch so as to permit hogs or fowl to pass beneath `the same to the exclusion of larger animals such as horses or cattle.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is- A gate structure comprising a substantially U-shaped frame, a transverse brace bar connecting opposite legs of said frame, a union, vertical and horizontal brace bars extending radially therefrom, the horizontal brace bars being connected to the frame and transverse bar respectively, a shaft passing through said union, a Weight slidahly mounted on one of the horizontal brace bars and having a curved and grooved face to fit the frame, Clips Carried hy the fra-ine for holding` the Weight thereagainst, and a e01- lar mounted on the horizontal brace har and secured against the Weight.
