Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 25, 1911; Serial No. 616,984.

To all 'whom it may concer/n Be it known that I, MArrHEw MULLINEUX, citizen of the Dominion offCanada, residing at Vancouver, in the Province of British i Columbia, Canada, have invented a new and useful Filling and Venting Aperture for Gasolene-Tanks-, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a filling and venting aperture for a gasolene tank which is closable by a cover hinged to the deck platey of the aperture and susceptible of be ing locked thereto, and my object has been to provide under one cover a closable filling and venting aperture 'of this kind having an ample provlsion for the escape from the tank of the air of displacement in a manner `that is clear from interferencefrom the inflowing gasolene.
Owing to the extreme lightnessof gasolene, where a tank filling aperture is dependf ent for the escape of the displaced air on the chance accommodation through the same aperture, `much gasolene is wasted by blowbacks, and the same trouble occurs even when a separate venting tube isv furnished, if an insufiicient area is provided or if the filling pipe terminates in proximity to the entra-nce to the vent pipe. These objections I have overcome in the invention which is the subject of this application by providing a filling and venting aperture which are concentric withl one another and closable by the same plug or cap, the inner or filling tube and the venting space outside of the filling tube and connected to the top of the tank.

Thecover 7 is provided with a lock 10 by which it maybe secured in the closed position. On the hinge pin 8 of the cover isk a-spring 11 tending to throw the cover open when the same is released by the withdrawal of the lock bolt from the hasp 12 of the cover.
Concentrically supported in any convenient manner within the tube 4 is an inner tube 14 so as to leave an annular space 15 between it and the outer vtube 4 and this inner tube, which is the filling tube, projects below the top of the tank 3 a suflicient distance to insure that the gasolene poured through it in filling will not be caught by the current of the air of displacement flowing out through the annular space 15 from the upper part of the tank.
The inner tube 14 is here shown as having a threaded upper end to engage a corresponding screw thread nut in three or more radial projections 16 from the inner side of the aperture in the deck plate 6. This forms a simple and convenient manner of supporting the filling pipe 14 Within the outer pipe 4 so as to leave a venting passage 15 between the two pipes. The manner of supporting the inner pipe within the outer is comparatively secondary. The essential feature is the provision of one within the other and closable with a sealing or locking cover.
I therefore claim as my invention:
1. In a filling device for tanks, a. deck plate having an aperture therein, a hin ed cover seating around the aperture to c ose the same, a tank, a tube connectin the aperture in the deck plate with the tan a second tube maintained approximately concentric within the aperture and extending downward within the beforementioned tube into the tank, and means for supporting the inner tube from the deck plate said means comprising radial projections from the inside of the deck plate and means for s'ecurrojections.
2. In a filling devlce for tanks, a deck plate having an aperture, a tube connectin said aperture to the tank, a hinged an locked cover seating around and closing this aperture, a second tube approximately lconcentric within the aperture but projecting within the tank to a level below the connec- .tion of the larger tube, said inner tube having a threaded end and radial projections from the deck plate threaded to receive the threaded end of said inner tube.
3. A device ofthe class described comprising a deck plate having a depending tubular portion internally threaded at the lower end and provided with a plurality of inwardly projecting internally threaded lugs near 1ts upper end, a tank, a pipe threaded into said lower endof said tubular portion and connected with, said tank at the top, and a second pipe whose upper end is` threaded into said lugs and whose lower end projects into said tank and terminates below the end of said first mentioned tank, and a cover plate carried by said deck plate to close the entrance to said tubular portion.
4. A device of the class described comprising a deck plate having a downwardly projecting tubular portion and a depression in its upper face registering'with said tubular nee 1,283
portion, said tubular portion including inwardly projecting lugs adjacent to said depression, a pipe held by said lugs at its upper end and projecting downwardly through saidtuloular portion, a Second pipe secured in said tubular portion and surrounding said rst mentioned pipe, said second pipe terminating short of the end of said rst mentioned pipe, and a tank with which said pipes communicate, together with a cover plate for closing said depression and thereby closing s aid pipes.
