BED-RAIL FASTENING.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JOHN CAPOZZI, of the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, and LOUIS Knsnn, of Richmond, Contra Costa cotmty, State of California, both citizens of the United States, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bed-Rail. Fastenings. of which the followingis a specification.
This invention relates to a device for at taehing bed-rails to'the bed-posts and particularly pertains to a means for detachably securing the side and end rails of a bed to hollow or tubular posts.
It is the object of this invention to provide a simple and etiicient attachment for tubular bed-posts "for supporting the side and end rails of the bed, and which attachment is ada ')tcd to be easily and readily attafied to the tubular posts and removed therefrom.
A further object is to provide a means for fastening the bed-rails to the post which will securely retain the rails against displacement and which will prevent the bed from being twisted from side to side and will rigidly hold the side and end rails of the bed at right angles to each other.
Other objects will appear in the following specification.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which*- Figure 1 is a "crtical section of the invention as applied. Fig. 4- is an elevational view of a modified form of the invention. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section of another modified form of the invention.
In the drawings A represents a tubular bed-post, such as is employed in the construction of 'iron. and brass beds and to which the side and end rails l-(,, respectively, of the bed are designed to be attached. Our present invention resides in an attachment for the posts A by means of which the rails B- and. G of the bed may be secured to the posts A and removed therefrom. This attachment is preferably constructed of cast metal and is formed in three pieces,
one of which is designed to be inserted in the interior of the post A; another to be attached to the exterior of the post A and the third to be mounted on the end of the rail to be attached to the post. The first named member comprisesa segmental plate 2, the curved face of which conforms to the curvature of the inneirface of the post A, and is designed to be placed in ,contact therewith as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. Mounted on the curved face of the plate 2 are studs 3, which are threaded on their outer ends and extend through perforations D, formed in the post A and project a short distance beyond the outer face of the post.
The member to be attached to the exterior of the post Av consists of a block 4-. one face of which is concavcd longitinlinally to conform to the outer circumferential face of the post and il'orn'ied in the block 4 are perforations 5, through which the threaded studs 3 are adapted to extend. The face of the block 4 opposite the concaved face is preferably flat. as shown in Fig. 3, but it may be formed on a curve as shown in Fig. 5 if desired. .ltecesses ii are formed in the outer face of the block into which the outer ends of thestuds 5 extend, and nuts 7 are screwed on the threaded ends of the studs in the recesses 6, to bind the members 2 and t together on the post A, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Mounted on the outer face of the block --l is a. pair of outwardly projecting pins 9, which are formed with heads 5) on their outer ends; the inner or rear face of the heads 9 being disposed at short distance from the outer face of the block t;
The member to be attached to the bcd-rail B or (I, con'iprises a plate 10, the inner face of which is designed to contact the outer face of the block 4. and conforms thereto, in which plate perforations 11 are formed. The perforations 11 are of such diameter as to permit the heads J on the pins 9, being passed therethrough, and connecting with the perforations 11 are vertically extending slots 12, having a'lateral breadth eorrespomling, approximately, to the diameters of the pins 8. An angular bracket 13, is formed on the outer face of the plate 10, which is bolted or otherwise attached to the bed-rails B-C.
Formed on the outer face of the plate 10, and surrounding the perforations 11 and the slots 12, are outwardlyextending flanges 13, which project a short distance from the face of the plate and are tapered from their upper-to their lower ends, as shown in Fig.
1, to form keys o'r 'wedgeswhich areada ited to contact the rear faces of the heads 9 on the pins 8, and actto crowd the plate 10,
tight against the block 4 and prevent it from, becoming inadvertently loosened and to obviate rattling.
In the operation of the invention, when it is desired to "attach the side rail B to the post A, the plate 10 is secured to the block 4 by passing the perforations 11. over the heads 9 on the pins 8 and moving the plate }-10 downward so as to dispose'the pins 8 in the slots 12, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2; thev4:, as shown in Fig. 3.
' The use of this invention is particularly advantageous in the manufacture of beds formed of thin brass tubing, as it may be readily and securely attached to the tubing 1 with but little work on. the tubing; the forming of the perforations for thereception of the studs 3 being'all that is requ'red.

In a bed-rail supporting device for tubular framed beds, the combination with a tubular post, of a plate mountable in the interior of the post, threaded studs formed on said plate extending'through perforations in said post, a block having perforations therein arranged to extend over the threaded ends of said studs on the exterior of the post, nuts adapted to be screwed on the'outer ends of the studs to secure the block and plate together on the outer and inner walls of the post, a plate carried on the bed-rail, and means for removably engaging said plate with the block, including of the post, nuts adapted to be screwed on inner walls of the post, a plate carrled on I pins on the block having heads on their outer ends engageable with perforations formed in the plate,
