FLAME-EXTINGUISHER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DAVID RONDEAU, of the village of Letellier, in the Province of Manitoba, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flame-Ext-inguishers, of which the following is the specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in flame extinguishers particularly adaptable for lamps, lanterns, and other similar lighting appliances, and the object of the invention is to provide an inexpensive, cheap, durable and positive extinguisher which can be readily fitted to any of the above appliances.

It consists essentially in an extinguishing bar alined with the wick of a lamp, and means for moving the bar to pass it over the wick, the parts being arranged and constructed as hereinafter more particularly described and later pointed out in the appended claims.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lantern equipped with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the burner, the section being tFaken in the plane denoted by the line X X,

1 represents the bowl or base of the lantern which carries the usual side pieces 2 and 3 and is fitted with a burner 1, wick 5, cap piece or guard 6, a glass chimney 7 and perforated supporting plate 8.

9 is a curved or bent extinguishing bar having its upper end passing through a slot 10 formed in the cap piece 6 immediately at the edge of the wick and the body portion thereof passing through a second slot 11 formed in the chimney supporting plate 8 so that the bar is located within the plane of the wick. The lower end of the bar is pierced and slipped loosely on to a wire 12 permanently secured to the bowl 1 and having a coil therein at 13. One end 12' of the wire is turned upwardly and has the extremity thereof oifset at 12 while the other end 12 of the wire passes over the offset portion 12 and terminates in a finger piece 12*. The normal position of the extinguisher is shown in the drawings.

Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed August 14, 1911.

Assuming the wick lighted all that is necessary to do to extinguish it is to press the end 12 of the wire upwardly with the finger, which motion causes the bar 9 to slide in the slots until it passes over the top of the burner and effectually extinguishes the flame. If at any time it is desired to remove the plate 8 from the burner one has simply to release the end 12 of the wire from the offset portion 12* thereof and press it downwardly toward the bowl until the upper end of the bar 9 is withdrawn from the slot 11.

\Vhat I claim as my invention is:

1. In a lantern, the combination with the bowl, burner, cap piece, and perforated plate carried by the cap piece, of an arched bar slidably mounted in the plate and cap piece and in the plane of the wick, and a spring wire carried by the bowl and connected to the lower end of the bar, as and for the purpose specified.

2. In a lantern, the combination with the bowl, burner, cap piece, and perforated plate carried by the cap piece, of an arched extinguishing bar passing slidably through suitable slots formed in the cap piece and plate, and located in the plane of the wick, and a wire secured permanently to the bowl and passing through the lower end of the bar, said wire being provided with a spring coil, as and for the purpose specified.

3. In a lantern, the combination with the bowl, burner, cap piece, and perforated plate carried by the cap piece, of an arched extinguishing bar passing slidably through suitable slots formed in the cap piece and plate, and located in the plate of the wick, and a wire passing loosely through the lower end of the bar and permanently fastened to the bowl, said wire having the body portion thereof provided with a spring coil, and one end directed upwardly and offset, and the other end resting on the offset portion and supplied with a finger piece, as and for the purpose specified.
