WILLIAM H. HOFFS'IO'I, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
MANTLE-PROTECTOR.
nosifias.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM H. Horr- STOT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mantle- Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to mantle protectors for portable hydrocarbon oil lamps and has for its object to produce a simple, cheap and efficient device for shielding refractory mantles of the lamp from injury through contact with flying insects.
To this end the invention consists in certain novel and peculiar features of construc tion and organization as hereinafter described and claimed; and in order that it maybe fully understood reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1, is a side elevation, partly broken away, of a lamp equipped with a protector embodying my invention. Fig. 2, is a section on the line IIII of Fig. 1.
In the said drawings, 1 indicates the hollow base or reservoir for liquid fuel. EX- tending upward therefrom is a tubular stand consisting of the portions 2 and 3 and sup ported from and near the upper end of portion 3 is one or more burners having refractory mantles 4 of the usual or any preferred type and adjacent the mantles is an air tube 5. In practice the oil is vaporized by heat from the mantle or mantles, and the air to mix with the oil vapor to produce a combustible gas is supplied through pipe 5.
The mantle or mantles and the tube and adjacent parts are inclosed by a shade 6, and above the upper end of the shade may be supported the customary cap as at 7 The protector 8 is in the form of a centrally perforated foraminous disk, the same being preferably made of wire gauze having a sheet metal marginal binding and a sheet metal reinforcement or eyelet for the central perforation, the marginal binding be-' ing numbered 9 and the eyelet 10, and of course these parts tend to stiffen the protector, which, it will be understood, is operative only when used in conjunction with a shade to make an efficient protector. It is fitted to slide on the portion 3 of the stand- Speeification of Letters Patent.

ard and in use is slipped upward thereon until arrested by the lower edge of the shade and is secured in such position in any suitable manner as, for instance, by a slidable spring clamp 11 mounted on portion 3 of the standard. To give access to the mantles the clamp is released and slid downward to permit the protector to slide in the same direction, the parts being returned to their original positions when it is desired to again close the lower end of the shade and thus prevent bugs and insects from flying into the mantle or mantles and injuring or breaking the same.
From the above description it will be apparent that I have produced a device of the character described embodying the features of advantage enumerated as desirable and I reserve the right to all changes falling within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim 1. A lamp comprising a central supporting stand, a burner, a shade carried by said stand and surrounding said burner, a flat foraminous disk of the same diameter as said shade, said disk being slidingly mounted on said stand and provided with a cen tral opening therefor, and clamping means embracing said stand immediately adjacent said opening and holding said disk with its outer margin against the lower edge of said shade.
2. A lamp comprising a central support ing stand, a burner, a shade carried by said stand and surrounding said burner, a flat foraminous disk of the same diameter as said shade and provided with a reinforced outer margin and with a reinforced central opening slidingly engaging said stand, and a removable spring clamp embracing said stand adjacent said opening in said disk and acting to hold said disk with its outer margin clamped against the lower edge of said shade.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM H. HOFFSTOT.
