LOUIS HANSON, OE COTTONWOOD, IDAHO.
wnns'rnnrcnnia.
Tov allwhom it 'may concern."
Be it known that I, LoUis -I-IANsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cottonwood, in the county of Idaho and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tire-Stretchers;
and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same..
A This invention relates to wire stretchers and more particularly to means for stretching wire for fences. l
An object is to provide a rwire stretcher of the above stated character having a wire engaging portion which is adapted to be adjusted lo-ngitudinally for different widths of fence wire.
Other objects arid advantages will be hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings whiolrare made a part of this application, Figure 1 is an elevational view showing the device in operation. Fig. 2 is a4 detail cross sectional view through lthe adjustable wire engager, also through one of the wire grippers, and, Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the adjustable wire engager taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, the opposite -ends of said adjustable engager being above the ariii 5 and the ratchet wlieel 8 b`e.

Application filed July 13, 1911. Serial No. 638,304.
the wire fence grippers 11. yThewire fence grippers 11 are preferably U-shaped and the bar 13. The bar 13 is substantially obn' long in shape and is provided with an elongated slot practically its full through which slot bolts 14 are positioned.
Two or more of .the spacing bars 13 are usually employed, said spacing bars being connected by an extra bolt 16 with a suitable nut 17, said bolt 16 passing through the slots in two of the spacing bars. I'Vlien two or more of the spacing bars 13 are employed, a bolt 111 may be passed through the slots at the overlapping ends of the bars, to position one of the grippers 11 at the, center of the long adjustable bar formed lof a number of spacing bars 13.
It will be seen that by the use of the above described form of slotted spacing bars 13 and the wire grippers 11, the latter may be adjusted in relation to one another along the length of the spacing bar, which is held during the operation of the wire stretcher in a vert-ical position.
ln employing this wire stretcher the aux-v iliary postl is driven -in the ground a suitable distance from the post to which the wire fence is to be seciired and the inturned ends 12 of the wire grippers 11 are engaged with the `vertical edge of the wire fence, (as illustrated) and the, shaft' (i` iskrotated in the proper direction to wind the wires 10 therei'ipoii, said shaft being rotated by means of the wheel 7. The pawl 9, being engaged with 'the teeth of the ratchet wheel 8, will allow the shaft. G to be rotated in proper direction, said pawl .riding over the teeth of the ratchet wheel as they pass and catching back of each tooth, .thus preventing the shaft from rotating in the opposite direction to allow the wire fence to draw away before.
operation and which is simple in construction and cheap to manufacture. It will also be' length,
:seen that'.this'stretcher:may be 'employed for 'stretchin strong and durable stretcher.
, gagement with a What I claim is: y
l. A deviceof the class` described comprising' a longitudinally"adjustable spacing bar, adjustable grippers spaced upon said adjustable spacing bal', means for securing said grippers upon said. adjustable spacing bar and adjusting them in relation to one another, said grip ers being adaptedfor endevice: to bestretched, and means 'for drawing the adjustable spacing bar and grippers to stretch the device with which the gripper-s are engaged. 2. A' device of the class :described comprisingfa twopart longitudinally adjustdevice to be stretched,- and.. means for draw-v ing the two-partadjustable spacing bar and A the grippers carried thereby to stretch the device with Which thel grippers are engaged.
3. A' device of thelclassv described comprising a spacing bar, U shaped Wire grippers adjustablysecured to. one'fa'ce ,of
the spacing ban-'and spaced from onean'A other, said yU-shaped -grippers having parallelends turned upon themselves' to receive and hold a'vertical edgejofxajdevice to be stretched,v means. for securing 'saidwvire grippers in adjusted posit-ion and in spaced relation .to one another, and means for moving the spacing bar and grippersto stretch the `device with Whichthe grippel'sare en-Uw:
