`aims to provide a device of this character for setting the teeth of saws so that the teeth will be set even in order to provide for the smooth cutting of the saw.
This invention also contemplates a device of this character which shall be simple, substantial and inexpensive in construction, which shall be convenient and eiiicient in use, and which is provided with adjustable means whereby the saw teeth may be set as desired.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, which will be apparent as the invention is better understood, this invention resides in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings wherein the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated and wherein- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the saw set, parts being broken away. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional detail taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the anvil. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the anvil. Fig. 6 is a fragmental elevation of a modified form.
Referring specifically to the drawings, wherein similar reference characters have been employed to designate corresponding parts, the numeral 6 designates a suitable base, which has a pair of standards 7 mounted thereon, these standards having longitudinal slots 12 therein and having their lower ends oiiset rearwardly and secured to the sides of the base 6, the offset ends of the standards being designated by the numeral 32. The upper ends of the standards 7 are connected by a yoke or cross-piece 8, and a ram 9 is slidable between the standards 7, this ram having extensions 10 projecting from each side thereof and working in the slots 12, whereby the ram is guided between the standards 7. The standards 7 therefore form guides or slideways for the ram 9, and the ram when raised is adapted to be normally retained in elevated position by means of a leaf spring 13 secured to one of the standards 7 and having its free end entering the corresponding slot 12 to engage one of the projections 10. It will therefore appear, that when the ram 9 is raised, the spring 13 will engage the corresponding projection 10 in order to retain the ram normally in elevated position, and this spring 13 may be released by means of a cord or cable 14 attached thereto, which permits the spring to be drawn outwardly. This cord or cable 14 is guided by means of eyes 15 secured to the corresponding standards 7 and the corresponding side of the base, this cord or cable 14 having a ring or other handhold 16 attached to the free end thereof for l convenience in pulling same in order to free the spring 13.
An anvil 25 is arranged on the base 6 below the ram 9, this anvil being shown as` portion 27 and diverge inwardly, terminating at the ridge between the sloping portions, the respective sloping portions 2G and 27 being arranged rearwardly and forwardly. This anvil 25 is secured on the base 6 by means of a bolt or other securing member 29 passed upwardly through the base and engaged with the anvil.
A yoke or cross member 17 is secured between the lower ends of the standards 7 at a point slightly above the anvil 25, and a plunger 20 is slidable therethrough, the lower end of the plunger being adapted to cooperate with the sloping portion 26 of the anvil to set the saw teeth as will hereinafter appear. This plunger'20 is mounted for reciprocation in a bore 18 extending vertically through the yoke or cross member 17 and which has the lower end thereof contracted to form a shoulder 19, and a coiled wire spring 23 is disposed within the bore around the plunger 20 and is compressibly disposed between t-he shoulder 19 and a collar 21 secured to the plunger 20 adjacent its upper end so that the plunger is normally raised out of contact with the anvil. The upper end 22 of the plunger 2O passes through a plate 24 secured on the upper side of the yoke or cross member 17 over the bore 18 and lies in the path of the ram 9, so that when the ram is freed, the upper end of the plunger will. beds-truck bythe order to force the plunger Q againstntheanvil.v

A screw 30 is engaged in the base 6 at the front end thereof in order that the saw may restupon the head thereof, this screw form ing an adjustable saw rest so that when the saw teeth are placed on the anvil, the body Ao`f'.tlie"saw,may be adjusted to` various angles in order to set the saw teeth properly. VIn operation, the ram 9 israised, preferably by means of a handle or knob 11 providedat'one side, so that the ram is engaged by the spring 13. The saw is then placed on Y Vthe saw rest 30 and the tooth to be set is inserted between the flanges or ribs 28 in order that the pointed end thereof projects over V`the ridge and over the sloping portion 26 ,ofV the anvil. .When the saw tooth has been thus positioned on the anvil, the saw is held in position, and the operator may then pull the cord or cable 14 which will release the 30 spring 13 and permit the ram 9 to drop in order that the ram may strike the plunger '20., The rain in its downward movement accelerates and strikes the plunger 2O with an impact suliicient to overcome the Vtension of the spring 23 and cause the plunger to 'strike the. saw Vtooth with a blow suticient to set the saw tooth by bending same against the sloping portion 26 of the anvil. In this Vmanner,the various saw teeth may be set, 40 and as the ram 9 causes an even blow at every operation, the saw teeth are set with an even pressure, it being desirable to set the teeth even so that the saw will cut smoothly when in use. The standards or guides 7 may be of. any length, and the weight of the rain 9 is proportioned according to the length of the standards or guides in order that the momentum gained by the ram in its accelerating downward movement will be sufhcient to set the saw teeth. The cord or cable 14 permits the ram to be readily released so that the operator may use both hands for retaining the saw in position. c This saw set may be used in various places, wherever a suitable base or support for the saw set can be provided, and this device is serviceable for setting the saw teeth of various saws and for setting. the saw teeth at various angles as may be desired, this latter feature being accomplished by means of the adjustable saw rest 30V permitting the saw to be adjusted at various c .angles relative to the anvil.
The various parts of this device may be constructed of any suitable material, maj7 be made in various sizes and proportions, and it is understood that this device is otherwise susceptible of alterations or deviations -in its details within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
If desired, the cord 14 may be operated by means of a treadle, so that by pressing on the treadle with the foot, the operator may release the spring 13 from engagement with the ram, and if desired the ram may be raised by means of a treadle and a cable connecting the treadle of ther ram and trained over a pulley or other guide attached to the yoke 8, as will be apparent. These details are of no moment, andv are mentioned onlyV for the purpose ofV indicating that the spring 13 may be released by the treadle instead of by hand, and that the 8 5 ramV 9 may be raised in any other manner than above described. i y
As shown in Fig. 6, the ram 9 and the rear end of the base 6 are connected by a' contractile spring 33, which serves to increase the momentum of the ram so that the ram will impinge upon the plunger with greater force. v
This device may be Vemployed for setting the teeth of hand saws by substituting the anvil and the plunger with a suitable anvil and plunger` for this purpose, the anvil and plunger as shown being designed forsetting the teeth of larger saws.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A saw set embodying a base,l vertical guides mounted on the base, a ram slidable betweenthe guides, means for engaging the?? ram when raised, means for releasing said 'means, an anvil. on the'base, and a spring pressed plunger aboveethe anvil and lying in the path of the ram. i W 2. A saw set embodying a base, standards mounted on the base and having longitudinal slots therein, a ram slidable between the standards and having members engag-V ing in the slots, a'leaf spring secured to?? one standard and having its freeend passing into the corresponding slot to engage the corresponding member of the ram whenthe ram is raised, a cord attached to the leaf Y spring to free same', an anvil on the base be-- low the ram, and a plunger above the anvil and lying in the path of the ram.

A saw set embodying a base, vertical guides mounted on the base,.a ram slidable between the guides, means for engaging the ram when raised, means for releasing said means, an anvil on the base under the ram and having its face provided with oppositely sloping portions forming a lateral ridge, and members upstanding from one of said portions to receive a saw tooth in order that its point may extend over the ridge, a plunger arranged above the other sloping portion of the anvil and lying in the path of the ram, and an adjustable saw rest mounted on the base.
