To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT MARTIN, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in renches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to wrenches especially designed for use in connection with an expansible spike forming the subject matter of a companion application filed under even date. 1
My invention aims to provide a wrench that can be advantageously used in connec tion with a locked by a spring pressed latch that has a portion thereof extending to the head of the pin or bolt, for instance, that type of spike shown in my companion application, which has a spring pressed latch for holding the pin or bolt head of the spike in a locked position.
My wrench is constructed whereby it can be easily placed over the pin or bolt head for rotating the same after a spring actuated rod of the wrench has been pressed to release the latch of the pin or bolt head.
The invention will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench, partly broken away and partly in section, showing it in connection with the spike of my companion application, Fig. 2 is an enlarged plan of a portion. of the wrench, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.
A wrench in accordance with this invention comprises a handle bar 1 having the inner end thereof rectangular in cross section, off-set, as at 2, and provided with a rectangular head 8, said head having a rectangular opening 4 formed therein with one of the walls of the opening concave, as at 5. The top of the bar, adjacent to the head 3, is provided with a longitudinal recess 6 pin or bolt having a head that is intersecting a longitudinal bore 7 and slid ably mounted in said bore is a push rod 8 provided with a transverse pin 9 within the recess 6. Encircling the push rod 8, be tween the pin 9 and the outer end wall of the recess 6 is a coiled compression spring 10 that retains the push rod normally in a retracted position.
The under side of the bar, at the off-set portion 2 thereof, is provided with a longitudinal groove 11 having the inner end thereof in communication with a slot 12 formed in the bar 1. Pivotally mounted within the groove 11 by is the cam-shaped end 14 of an angle actuating member 15 that extends out of the opening 12 and has the end thereof provided with a button or head 16.
In practice, the opening 4 of the head 3 receives the head 17 of a rotatable pin or bolt 18 forming part of an expansible spike 19. After the wrench has been placed over the head 17, the button 16 is pressed and the actuating member 15 pushes upon the rod 8, causing the end of said rod to engage the upper end 20 of a spring pressed latch 21, carried by the head 17 for locking the head relatively to the spike 19. After the spring pressed latch has been opened, the wrench can be swung to rotate the pin or bolt 18 and release or look the arms 22 of the expansible spike 19, as occasion may require.
lVhen the button 16 is released, the spring 10 restores the push rod 8 to its normal position and the wrench can be removed from the head 17 of the pin or bolt.
What I claim is:
