MEANS FOR SUPPORTING SPARK-COIL CASES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BUTLLR AMES, a cit-i- States, residing at Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Supporting Spark-Coil Cases, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The principal objectof my invention is to economize space occupied by spark-coils back of the dash-board of an automobile, and I attain this object by so designing the spark-coil case and the dash-board that the case is in front .of the rear of the dashboard, while the vibrating mechanism of the spark-coil is accessible at the back of the dash-board.
In the drawings illustrating the principle of my invention and the best mode now known to me of embodying the same in operative structure, Figure 1 is a perspectlve view showing two spark-coil cases mounted in the dash-board of an automobile; the) cover of one case being removed, and the dash-board broken away to show how oneor more cases and board may becomb'ined. Fig. 2 is an elevation in section, the sparkcoil having been removed from its case. Fig. 3 is an elevation of externally screw-threaded metallic ring to receive the top portion of the case, and to be screwed into a hole in the dash-board; while Fig. 4 is a similar View of a cap to close the screw-threaded end portion of the ring, shown in Fig. 3.
A spark-coil case 1, preferably of wood, and cylindrical'in shape, has its open end portion provided with external screw threads 2, Fig. 2, and is adapted to engage corresponding screw threads 3 therefor in a suitable hole cut through a suitable sup port, say a dash-board 4 of an automobile.
, These threads may be formed 'in a. metallic ring 5, Figs. 1, 2 and 3, having a flange 6, and internal and external screw threads formed thereon, as by stamping. The cap has an outwardly .extending flange 9 which serves to engage the dash-board closely and serve as a finish. Into the front opening of the ring 5 may be screwed the threaded portionof the coil casepas clearly appears in Figs. 1 and 2.
The case has the usual binding posts which may be connected up in'any of the numerous ways commonly employed. It being preferably of wood, it is desirable to treat the case chemically for the purpose of making it waterproof, and preventing it from being subjectto undue swelling and shrinking.
Figs. 1 and 2 show clearly the merits of the invention; how little space at the rear of the board is taken up by the cap of the case, and how accessible becomes the vibrating mechanism 10 of'the coil; and further, how the greater part of the coil and its case are forward of the dash-board, and within, say, the space 'inclosed engine.
It is to be understood that, while this method of mounting one or more spark coil cases, is of great utility in connection with the dash-board of an automobile, my invention may be applied to anyother suitable environment, and may be embodied in many formally different structures. I Desiring to protect my invention in the broadest manner legally possible, What I claim isi 1. A' dash-board of an automobile, having ahole therethrough; a metal ring mounted in and extending out of said hole, and having internal screw-threads therein; means for securing said ring in said hole; a spark coil.case having a hollow cylindrical portion provided With screw-threads corre sponding to those in said ring, to engage said latter threads; cover for said case.
