Be it known that I, Isaac E. PALMER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State Qf Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Reversible- `MattressSecuring Means for Couch-Harm` mocks, of which the following description,

in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.

This invention relates to means for securing mattresses or other coverings to couch hammocks and more particularly to means for securing reversible mattresses with either face uppermost upon the frame of the hammock.

In order that the principle of the inven-l tion may be readily understood, I have disclosed a single embodiment thereof in the accompanying drawing, wherein- Figure l is a side elevation of a couch hammock having my invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a detail mainly in longitudinal section showing the preferred means for securing the mattress upon the frame; and Fig. 4L is a similar detail mainly in transverse section.

In accordance with my invention, I propose to provide a mattress preferably having two acceptable faces with means as herein described for securing the mattress upon the frame with either face uppermost.

The couch hammock may be of any suitable character, but is herein shown as consisting of a frame having end members l and longitudinal members 2 rigidly connected thereto and suspension endssecured at 4 to the frame. Obviously, however, the structure of the couch hammock forms no part of the present invention.

The mattress or other covering may be of any suitable construction, but preferably is composed of la casing having faces 5, 6, either of which may be used as the upper face. These faces may be of the same material, or may contrast with each other'in texture, color or substance. For example, one of the faces may be of cloth and the other of matting, leather or the like. The mattress may be substantially rectangular in cross section or may have more or less rounded edges as herein indicated. The mattress is provided with any suitable wadding or stuiiing 7. In order to render the mattress readily and acceptably reversible, I preferably prolong the upper and lower faces 5, 6, so as to provide end flaps or strips 8, 9, the uppermost of which preferably may lie against the suspension ends 3, so as to present a neat and attractive appearance and proper finish. Obviously, the edge flaps or strips may be provided at one or both ends or at one or both sides, in which latter case the securing means would be provided at one or both of the sides. The facings 5, 6 are preferably composed of distinct pieces secured. together or to an intermediate edge piece. The flaps or strips S, 9 may be distinct from and secured to the facingsi, 6 or'may be continuations thereof.

At a suitable point between the strips 8, 9, I provide securing means l0 to attach the mattress or other covering to the frame and preferably so that the mattress or other covering may be reversed, the means herein disclosed being of t-he nature of a suitable pin, piercing member or wire, preferably rotatably or adjustably mounted in or between the members 8, 9, as indicated at 11, so that when the mattress is reversed the said member 10 may be turned to bring the securing portions of the member into engagement with the frame, whatever be the position of the mattress. The shape and character of the securing member l0 may be varied, but I have herein represented it as a staple like member having ends 12-12 adapted to be received in sockets 13 in the upper face of the frame. If desired, the staple may be provided with shouldered portions 14 to limit the penetration of the frame by the staple. In order to permit the rotative or adjusting movement of the staples, I provide the strips 8, 9, or the faces 6, 7 wit-h openings, such as 15, through which opposite portions of the staple may pass. Any suitable number of staples or other members may be provided. I-Ierein, I have indicated three, to be employed at each end of the mattress. staple or member at or near the corner of the mattress, thereby assisting to shape the parts at the corners and to secure them in position at such point. As previously stated, however, the staples may be employed at the sides of the hammock instead of at the.ends or at both sides and ends. The

staple is preferably formed of wire of suitable character.

Instead of securing the staple-like inembers, wires or the like to the mattress with capacity for reversal and providing them with parts'for detachable engagement with the frame of the hammock, I may reverse such construction. In other words, the wire or wires or equivalent members may be substantially permanently attached to the frame and may be so formed as to be detachably connected to the mattress with capacity for reversal of the mattress with respect to said wires, thus permitting ready reversal of the mattress.

Having thus described one illustrative embodiment of my invention, I desire it to be understoodvthat although specific terms are employed, t-hey were used in a generic and descriptive sense and not for purposes of limitation, the scope of the invention being set forth in the following claims.

Claims:

l.- In combination, a couch hammock having a frame provided with sockets adjacent one or more edges thereof, a mattress or other covering having two acceptable faces and reversible, staple-like members pivotally secured to said covering and 'having free ends adapted to penetrate the sockets of the frame.

A reversible couch hammock mattress or other covering having two acceptable -f' l Copies of this patent may be obtained for iive cents each, by addressing the mattress or other covering faces, and upper and lower transversely extending end flaps or stripsrat one or to said mattress ends between said flaps or strips to secure the mattress tothe frame with either face uppermost.

3. A reversible couch hammock mattress or other covering having two acceptable faces, and upper and lower transversely eX- tending end aps or strips at one or both ends thereof and reversible staple-like members secured to the mattress ends between said iiaps or strips, and adapted to be received by the couch hammock frame, thereby to secure the mattress upon the frame with either face uppermost.

4. In combination, a couch hammock having a frame provided with socketsvin its upper face at one or more edges thereof, a having two acceptable faces and reversible staple'- like members pivotally secured to one or more edges of the mattress or other covering and having free ends adapted to penetrate the sockets of the frame.
