ITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. HELL, 0F DAVENPORT, IOWAa SA'SI-I-I-IOLDER.
Specification of Iietters Patent.
Patented June 25, 1912 Application filed June 23, 1910. Serial No. 568,530.
To all whom, it mag concern:
Be it known. that I, WILLIAM A. HELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, ghave invented certain new and usevented fromrattling.
Another object is to provide a window. which will be practically dust proof.
With the foregoing andother objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of a window frame and sash having my invention applied thereto, parts being broken away and in section; Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 3; Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on he line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a rear pe spective view of one of my improved sash holding, rollers and its supporting plate removed rom the sash; Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of the roller and its supporting: lever removed from the casing.
.Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 denotes a windowframe which may be of the usual or any desired construction for holding sliding sashes. In the sash guide ways'2 of the frame between the'stop strips '31 and preferably arranged adjacent to one of said strips; are verticall disposed guide tracks 4: which are'prefera ly in the form of angle iron bars and which extend up and down the entire length of the sides of the frame.
In the opposite side pieces 5 of each of the sashes are arranged guide roller supporting plates 6, said plates being countersunk to lie flush with theouter surface of the side pieces and are arranged over recesses formed in said side pieces as shown.
Formed on the inner side of the plates 6 and projecting into the recesses in the side pieces of the sash are bearing brackets 7 between which' and the adjacent inner side of the plate is pivotally mounted abell crank roller supporting and operating lever 8. One arm of the lever 8 is bifurcated and in said bifurcated end is revolubly mounted a grooved sash guiding and holding roller 9 which is adapted to engage and travel on the tracks 4 arranged in the guide ways of the window frame.
With the opposite arm of the bell crank lever 8 is slidably connected one end of a coiled spring 10 the opposite end of which is secured to a stud arranged in and projecting from the inner side of the plate 6 as shown. The tension of the spring when thus arranged is to force the guide roller outwardly and to hold the same into close engagement with the tracks, thereby keeping the sash from rattling, at the same time permitting said sash to be readily raised or lowered without binding. In the outer edge of the side pieces of the sashes are formed longitudinal grooves 11 which are arranged in line with the grooved guide rollers and are adapted to receive the guide tracks on Bythus arranging the' the window frame. tracks 4 and forming the grooves 11 in the sides of the sash to receive said tracks the window will be practically dust proof.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that the parts comprising the device are located on the inner flat surface ofthe supporting plates and that the coiled springs 10 are held'out of frictional engagement therewith for the free action of the same.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, theconstruction and operation of the invention will be readily understood with out requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of eonstructionmay be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claim. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
In combination with a window frame having a vertical track secured thereto and projecting into a recess in one side of the sash frame, of a plate secured to one side of the recess having an angular bracket thereon, a bell crank lever having a base provided with a rearwardly extended horizontal arm andalso having upwardly spaced arms provided with a roller journaled therebetween, said base of the'bell crank lever pivoted to the bracket, 9, lug on the plate a spring hav ing one end secured tothe lug and its other end connected to the lever, said bell crank lever adapted to have a rocking movement within the bracket when the roller travels over the track the spring permitting of the rocking movement, and said spring also keeping the roller in contact with the track during its travels over the same.
Y In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM A. HELL. Witnesses:
HOWARD N. FISHER, WILLIAM STOEFEN.
