Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, ISADORE H. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cabinets, of which I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The objects of the invention are to provide a cabinet constructed for the storage and protection of accounts, and which may also inclose a filin register for accounts and an index there or,a cash drawer and sales slips or checking devices and other means for filing and recording sales or oflice accessories of any character.

The leading features of this invention consist in providing means for the preservation of store, factory or oflice accounts, cash and records of any kind from flood and fire, and comprise an inclosure adapted and arranged to contain such matters, the walls of said case when closed being water and fireproof, and the joints substantially air and gas tight, and all edges covered and protected by means of their specific overlapping form of construction.

The invention consists in a rigid fire and water-proof bottom plate, rigid fire and water-proof side walls, a dropping front wall slidingly movable into the lower part of the case, and a top or cover revoluble on a' fixed, axis, and provided with a disappearing curved portion which is withdrawn into a cavity in the case when the cover is raised, and when the cover is closed is not completely withdrawn therefrom, but the points of engagement with the curved edges are protected and covered by the overlapping edge so as to prevent the admission of heat into the interior of the case.

Allthe engaging edges of the side walls and front and cover areformed so as to overlap and make tight joints and prevent hot air from entering the interior. The sliding front is formed in hinged portions and slides under the bottom plate and the meeting edges of these portions are beveled so as to engage closely when the drop frontis raised to a vertical osition. Means are also provided for holding the dropping showin a longi udinal section of the device with the parts in the closed position; Fig. 4: is a transverse section thereof in line 03-0: Fig. 3, and also shows a portion of the front of the case. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the metallic frame of case open. Fig. 6 is a similar view of the frame of the case closed, and Fig. 7 is a detail view showing the meeting edges of the front wall and one of the side walls.

In these views, l, 1, are the side Walls, secured rigidly upon a bottom or base plate 2. 3 is a cover plate, preferably attached to the side walls by means of the rigid arms 4:l pivoted at 55 to the side walls l1.

6 is the extensible portion of the front wall which is hinged to the rear portion 7 at 8. Both portions are slidingly movable in the side walls underneath the bottom plate 2, when the drop front is lowered. To further protect the interior of the case from the entrance of hot air or flame, the curved portion of-the cover does not enter the interior where the records are kept, but passes into a chamber C formed by walls 11 and 12, arranged to meet at 13, and to out OK the chamber C from communication with the interior of the case. The inner edge 10 of the opening 10 is always protected by the curved end of the cover. The outer edges of the cover are provided with the angle bar 14, haying its outer edge or rim spaced therefrom so as to overlap the upper and side edges of the side walls and front 6 when the parts are closed. This rim enters a curved recess B, formed in, the frame of each side Wall where the rim is curved. The outer and meeting edges of the side walls, cover and drop plate are correspondingly shouldered at 15, 15, so as to always overlap each other and form an air tight the case tightly closed; Fig. 3 is' joint in the manner of a safe. The meeting edges 16 of the drop front portions are accurately mveled to form a tight fit, and the front when raised engages the front edge '17 of the bottom plate and forms a. tight overlapping joint when closed.

Air tight joints are formed for the inner portion of the drop front with the side walls by means of the an le plates P, socured to the side walls, which enter slots Q in the sliding part. And also plates :10, w, projecting from the side edges of the drop front and part 7 are designed to overlap the vertical edges of the side walls when the front is raised. These plates 00, m, slide into grooves G-G under the side walls when the front is lowered. Links Tr-L pivotally attached to the drop front near its ower'edge at L extend inwardly to the edges of the sliding portion thereof, and are secured thereto by pins L L, which pass through the slots L L in the links, which permits of free movement of the links when the front is raised and hold it horizontal so that it can be used as a desk when lowered.

At 20, 20 are shown brackets which are hinged at 21 to the cover and are folded back upon the cover when the cover is closed as shown in Fig. 3, but when the cover is open they can be folded out and rest upon the shouldered edges of the side walls as shown in Fig. 1. Each plate, comprising a side wall, bottom, cover or front plate, is formed preferably of three portions, vizouter and inner sheets S, S, of steel, and the intermediate filling 22 composed of fireproof and insulating -material such as fibrous asbestos, and a substance such as magnesia and other ingredients which when heated generate a gas which will not support combustion, and will prevent the occurrence ofa flame, and tend to prevent documents or files from 'being reduced to a charred condition by the flame, is incorporated in the asbestos. The gas thus generated will escape into the interior through openings 24:, 24. Each plate is reinforcedby means of an inclosing frame 23 to which the steel sheets are attached. The curved end of the cover is formed in the shape of a segment of a cylinder'having the pivot point 5 in its center line and slides over-the curved rear and upper edges of the side walls 1, 1 and when the cover is elevated the inner end of the curved portion rests against the inner end of the recess. The curved and shouldered edge of one side wall is seen in Fig. 1.

At 30 is shown a form of index, at 31 a form of cash drawer and at 32 is shown a supporting plate for a cash register. -When the cover 13 thrown back a plate 33 on the cover will lie horizontally and close the opening at the rear of the plate 32, as shown in Fig. 3.

It will be observed that the cover and its curved extremity are rigid and integral and that the result of pivoting the same to the case by means of arms depending from the cover intermediate of its ends is to partially balance the'cover-so that it will be easier to lift, also since the curved portion enters. a chamber in the case the exposed portion of the cover will be shortened when'it assumes thus adding much to the appearance of the case. In a cabinet, side, rear, and bottom and front walls, a rigid cover, said cover provided with a rigid integral rear extremity curved in the form of a segment, and pivotal points of attachment for said cover and side walls in the center line of said segment, and intermediate between the ends of said cover, whereby the curved extremity of said cover will enter the rear of said cabinetwhen the cover assumes a yertical position, and curved guides for Laid cover in said side walls, said guides extending below said pivotal points.

4. In a case for the preservation of records, rigid *bottom, side, and rear walls, a disappearing front wall, and a rigid cover having a rigid integral rear extremity curved in the form of a segment, said cabinet provided with a recess adapted to receive said curved'rear extremity, arms secured to the cover and pivoted to the side walls on the center line of said segment, said cover thereby permitted to assume a 'verticalposition when the curved extremity enters said recess, said side walls provided with recesses extending below said pivotal points, in which the edges of said curved extremity enter.

5. In a cabinet, side and bot-tom walls and rear walls forming an inclosed recess in the body of said cabinet, the sidewalls curved in the are of a circle, at their rear upper corners, a horizontal cover overlapping said side walls and provided "with an integral rear extremity curved in the form of a segment of a cylinder, the curved portion hav ing a bearing upon the curved edges of said side walls, said walls recessed to permit the said curved portion of the cover to enter the same below the said curved edges and permitting the dover to assume a vertical position, the inner ends of said recesses serving as stops for said cover.

6. In a cabinet, side walls and a bottom wall, the side walls curved in the form of arcs at their rear upper edges, and recessed in continuation of said curved edges, a horizontal cover. adapted to overlap the upper edges of the side walls when closed, and having a rear extremity curved in the form of a segment of a cylinder, adapted to overlap the said curved edges of the side walls, said side walls provided each with a curved recess adapted to receive the said curved rear portion of the cover when it is raised to a vertical position, the engaging horizontal and curved edges of the side walls and cover shouldered to make tight joints, said shoulders in the curved positionslidingly movable on each other.

7. In a cabinet, side walls and a bottom wall, the side walls having rear upper edges curved in the form of arcs, a cover having a flat port-ion adapted to cover the horizontal edges of the side walls and with a rear extremity curved in the form of the segment of a cylinder, said curved portion adapted to cover the curved portions of said walls, radial arms secured to said cover and pivoted in said side walls centrally of said arcs, and a curved recess in each wall extending underneath the said pivotal points in said side walls, adapted to receive the edges of said segment to permit the an uprlght position.

8. In a cabinet, side, and bottom walls, alower rear wall and transverse inner rear wall forming a recess in the rear of the cabinet, the rear upper edges of the side walls curved in the are of a circle, above said rear wall, a cover therefor having a flat portion adapted to inclose the horizontal edges of the side walls and havinga rear portion curved to engage the curved rear edges of said side walls, the side Walls recessed in continuation of the said curved edges to receive said curved rear portion of said cover when said cover is raised to an upright position, said curved portion of said cover passing between said rear Wall and said inner wall.

9. A case or receptacle comprising sides, bottom and fixed rear end, and hinged front and a top or cover pivotally connected to the sides adjacent the rear ends, the upper corners of said sides being rounded, the rear end of-said top or cover being corre spondingly curved, said top or cover having an overlapping flange at the front and side edges, therear ends of said overlapping flanges being curved to correspond with the curve of the cover and corners, and curved sockets arranged upon the exterior of the receptacle adapted to receive the curved ends of the overlapping flanges as set forth.

A case or receptacle comprising rigid sides and bottom and a hinged front, the upper rear corners of said sides being curved, a top or cover, having depending arms adja- Cent the rear end, said arms being pivotally connected to the side, the rear end of said top or cover being curved to correspond to the curve of the corner, said top or cover having overlapping side flanges, the rear ends of said side flanges being curved to correspond with the curved end of the cover, and corners of the side sockets arranged upon the sides adapted to receive said curved ends of the overlapping flanges,
