FLUSH-TANK COVER.
1 030,059 Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented-June 18, 19112. Application filed April 16, 1910. Serial No. 555,956.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, SAMUEL DRUGAN and JOHN SoHonNTHALnR, citizens of the United States, and residents. of Trenton, Mercer county, New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Flush-Tank Gov-v ers, of which the following is a specification.
ur invention relates to water closet flush tanks, and the object of our invention is to provide an improved form of top or cover, preferably made of vitreous or earthen ware for use with tanks made of the same or similar material.
The present practice, or a practice which has come very much into vogue of late, is to have a tank of the same material as the closet bowl. In order to provide a cover for such tank, the material of which it is composed demands that it be made sutficiently heavy, to avoid breakage by accident or during the burning operation on the one hand, and so that it may be retained in place by its own weight on the other hand,
The upper and lower walls may be merged at the front and sides into an ornamental edge 5. pper wall may be molded wlnle plastic by suitable means in one piece, and the bottom or lower wall may also be molded while plastic in one piece and joined to the upper wall or section, and these two sections are secured together while in the low space during the burning operation, a pair of such aperdesigned, and a number of the same can be formed in the lower wall without affecting the strength of the same or the top or cover.
In order that the top may rest upon and be retained by the wall of the flush tank, we prefer to provide it with a depending edge 9 at the front, and set inwardly some insure the bur g sired extent without distortion or other damage before or immediately after being taken from the kiln.
Our improved top advantage of which duce the dead weight or cover is hollow; the construction is to reof the same and at the same time provide a structure possessing all of the features that are desirable for the purpose for which it is intended. We are further enabled to increase the strength of the top or cover and prevent distortion of the same; such distortion beingcaused by the contraction which occurs during the burning operation.
ur invention is fully shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1, is a perspective view of our improved tank top or cover shown in the a port-ion of the tank being lndlcated by dotted lines; Fig. 2, is a rear that a continuous projection paralleling the edge may take the place of such lugs.
It is desirable, of course, in the finishing of such a structure that the rear edge or wall bear a definite relation to the front edge of the same as regards distance from and that it be substantially parallel therewith. To produce this result, it frequently becomes desirable to grind such rear edge or wall. To this end, the rear edge or wall is hollowed in the manner indicated at 7 so that if such grinding operation becomes necessary, the portion of the wall to be reduced will be relatively small in area.
Flush tank tops or covers are usually made of white porcelain, but it will be understood plan view, and Fig. 5, the line a-a, Fig. 3.
In the drawings herewith, 1 represents the top or cover, the upper surface of which may be ornamental in character or not as desired; which cover is composed of upper and lower walls 2 and 3, and a rear wall 4.
wall merging with the bottom wall at the "frontand ends of the same.
8. A hollow cover having top, bottom and rear walls integrally connected together, the bottom wall having a dependingedge following the contour of the front and ends of the structure, and the bottom wall having a depending portion affording positioning means for said cover. 1
In testimony whereof, we have signed our names to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.

that other materials may be employed, and that they may be of an ornamental character, or not, as may be desired.
We claim:
1. A hollow cover having top, bottom and rear walls integrally connected together, the bottom wall having a depending edge -fo1- lowing the contour of the front and ends of the structure, and the rear wall having a portion of its surface cut away.
2. A hollow cover having top, bottom andrear walls integrally connected together, the bottom wall having a depending edge following the contour of the front and ends of the structure and a plurality of lugs paralleling said depending edge to afford positioning means for said cover, and the top Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
