COMBINATION TOY PARACI-IUTE AND SI-IOVEL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SEWARD CHARLES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination Toy Parachutes and Shovels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in childrens toys and has for its object the production of a combination toy for use either as a parachute or sand-shovel.
The device may be used either within doors or in the open air; it will afford especial enjoyment to children at the sea shore, or mountain home, where after tiring of using the same as a shovel, they can toss the device, parachute uppermost, into the air and watch the gradual opening of the parachute, as the toy descends to the earth, or is wafted along before them.
The invention will be readily understood on referring to the drawing whereon Figure 1 shows the toy with its parachute closed, as when intended for use as a shovel, and Fig. 2 as floating through the air with parachute opened to its full extent.
The letter A indicates a suitable handle, to the upper end of which a collapsible para- Specification of Letters Patent.

chute B is fastened at c. Secured into the other end of the handle is a blade D which serves to guide the toy in its flight, and also as a shovel to dig in sand. The edge of the parachute is connected with the handle by a number of cords D, so that in the downward movement the parachute will be maintained in proper open position.
Having described my invention what 1 claim, is
1. A toy comprising a collapsible parachute operatively attached to one end of a shaft or handle and a blade for guiding the toy in its upward and downward movements.
2. A toy comprising a handle or shaft, a collapsible parachute operatively attached to one end of said handle or shaft, and a blade attached to the other end of the handle, whereby the toy is guided in its ascent and descent.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 15th day of February, A. D. 1912.
SEVVARD CHARLES.
