Description
H. L. VAUGHAN.
BOTTLE OPENER. APPLICATION rum: 0013,1910.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARRY LOCKWOOD VAUGHAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
BOTTLE-OPENER.
. ing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Openers, of which the following is a specification. 1
This invention relates to improvements in bottle openers and especially to crown seal It has for its object to provide a device for removing crown and other similar seals from bottles without injuring the bottle.
Another object is to provide a simple, durable and inexpensive device of this nature, which may be attached to a base.
Another object is to provide a combination bottle opener and match scratcher;
With the above and other objects in view,
I have invented-the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings which is an improvement over Patent No. 943,759, issued to me on December 21, 1909. I found the device covered by the above patent, defective, in that it had a tendency to bind the mouth of the bottle and cause it to chip or crack. This difliculty I have obviated in the present invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved bottle opener attached to a base, and Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the device showing it in operation.
Referring't-o the drawingsl indicates a base to which my bottle cap remover is secured by means of two screws or nails 2 and The device is made preferably of a piece of sheet metal having a certain resiliency and consists of a supporting base 4 having a right angular projection 5 which may be roughened in order to form a match striking surface. The forward edge 6 of the right angular portion 5, is semi-cylindrical, and the free edge 7 of this cylindrical portion is bent up at right angles to form a cap engaging member. The metal is doubled at 7 upon itself to form a two ply cap engaging hook. At a subcentral position however, the plate gradually diverges from the angular portion 5 until its end 11 is in a plane parallel to the base 1. A- cap engaging groove 10 is. formed adjacent the end 11.
This depending portion 11 acts as a brace for the other parts of the device but is not Specification of Letters Patent.
fixedly secured to the base contacting the and slide up and down rather than bind too tightly upon the bottle, thus acting as a cushion therefor.
Patented June 18, 19.12. Application filed October 3, 1910. Serial No. 585,125.
l/Vhen it is required to remove the cap 14:
from the bottle 13 it is placed in position in the device as illustrated in Fig. 2, and the bottle, therefore there will be no tendency to chip the mouth of the bottle as in most other openers.
Having described my invention I claim and deslre to secure byLetters Patent 1. A bottle cap remover consisting of a base-having a resilient depending cap engaging member, the edge of said depending member being upturned, and a resilient .brace for said depending member.
2. A bottle cap remover consisting of a base having a resilient depending cap engaging member, the edge of said depending member being upturned, a brace for said de pending member, said brace having a groove therein.
3. A bottle opener consisting of a fixedbase having a right angular extension, said extension having a semi-cylindrical end adapted to engage the cap of a bottle and a resilient brace therefor.
LA bottle opener consisting of a fixed base, having a right angular extension, said extension having a semi-cylindrical member adapted to engage the cap of a bottle, said semi-cylindrical member having an upturned portion, a brace for said semi-cylindrical member, said brace having sliding movement on its base.
5. A bottle opener consisting of a fixed base having a right angular extension, said extension having a semi-cylindrical member adapted to engage the cap of a bottle, said semi-cylindrical member hating a right angular upturned portion, an integral brace for said cap engaging portion, said brace having a groove therein adapted to engage the edge of a bottle cap. j
6. A bottle opener consisting of a base having a right angular extension, terminat v 15 saidsemi-cylindrlcal portion being doubled ing in a semi-cylindrical portion, having its free edge turned up at an angle thereto, said
semi-cylindrical portion being doubled to form a stifiening therefor.
7. A bottle opener consisting of a-tbase having a right angular extension, terminat ing in a semi-c lindri'cal, ortion,-having its free end turne up at a right angle thereto,
' said semi-cylindrical portion being doubled to form a stifiening therefor, and means for bracing said semi-cylindrical portion. 1
8. A bottle opener consisting of a 'base having aright angular extension, terminating in a semi-cylindrical rtion, having its free end turned up-at a right angle thereto,
to formastiffening therefor, means for bracing said'semi-cylindrical portion, and a groovein said bracing means.
9.- A bottle opener consisting of a base having 9." right angular extension terminating in a semi-cylindrical portion having. its free edge angularly inclined, said semi-cylindrical portion being double to form a st-ifiening therefor, sald stiffening portion extending rearwardlyand being bent down on a line shortof said base line to form. a flexible cushion.
Intestimon whereof I-afiix my signature in presence .0 two witnesses.
