PRINTING-PRESSES.
Application filed April 8, 1911.
To all. whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Hans HomonANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Sheet-Regis tering Devices for Printing-Presses, of which the following is once being had therein to the accompanying registering devices for printing presses. The object of my invention is to provide a device .of this character which will accurately register or position the sheetof pa-. per upon the platen of a printing press and in which the same is operated by the rocking of the platen.
Another object of my invention is to prohaving certain details of structure hereinafter more fully forth.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side clevation of a printing press platen with my improved sheet registering means attached.
vide an eifective device of this character\ Fig. 2 is an elevation of the opposite of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the complete register removed from the platen. Fig. 4 is a top View of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken on the line A B, Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a vertical section taken on the line C D, Fig. 3. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the reciprocating cam. Fig. 8 is an end elevation 0 Fig. 7. Fig. 9 is a-longitudinal section of one of the registering fingers. Fig. 10 is a plan view of .on'e end of the gripper-bar, and Fig. 11 isa side elevation of the operating finger.
1 represents the shaft printing press upon oscillating platen .2
3 represents one riage arms,
as found in a platen which is mounted the common to such presses. of the inking roller car which cooperates with the platen the shaft 1 thereof, in a manner to suitably operate the inking rollers. To the arm 3 1s detachably fixed the depending inclineddog-tinger 4, which, when in action, operates a portion of niy improved sheet registering device have shown this form of att achinent as the operating means, it is 'evident that other devices connected in a ditl'erent l manner to certain movable parts of the press could easi y be made to perform simi- Specification of Letters Patent.

lar results without of my invention.
5 and 6 represent the gripper finger bar supports, attached one at each corner of the lower edge of the platen 2, and in which the linger-bar 7 is pivotally mounted in such a manner and with suitable attachments, as commonly found on all such printing presses for raising and lowering the gripper-fingers t), as the platen is rocked back and forth. The lower edge 8 of the bar 7 extends somewhat below the pivotal center departing from the spirit thereof forming a cam-like member which,
when in action, operates a portion of my improved sheet registering or positioning device as will be l'lereinafter more fully described. Y
10 represents the frame of the registering device having suitable holes 11 therein for attaching it to the under side of the lower edge of the platen 2, where it is firmly attached in soon a manner that its movable parts properly register with the operating means above ing supporting members 12, 1.3 and 14 are firmly fixed to the frame 10 and are designed to carry certain operative parts of the device.
One end 15 of the frame 10 depends some what and supports an inclined inwardly projecting shelf 16 upon which slidably operates a cam 17, its graduated edge 18 engaging the roller 19 mounted within the sliding block 20 which is fixed to the header or guide-arm shaft- 21 mounted nally the frame 10 and and the lower portion of the support 12. The cam 17 is actuated downwardly by engagement with the projecting edge 8 of the gripper 7 above described, and is retained normally in a withdrawn position by means of a suitable spring 17', one cnd-of which is attached to the underside of the shelf 16 and the opposite end to the under side of the lower end of the cam 17. The block 20 is slid-ably supported intermediate the lower corner 10 of the frame 10 and the upper face of the shelf 16, as clearly shown in Fig. 5. Thus it is seen that when the gripper bar 7 is rocked downwardly as the laten is returned from press, the cam 17 will be thrust downwardly between the inner wall of the end 15 and the roller 19, which will force the roller, together with the block 20, away from the end wall 15,
longitudiwithin the end 15 will impart a lo gitudinal movement to he shaft 21. T e innermost end of said shaft is screw-threaded as at 22 and carries longitudinally adjustable thereupon the rertic lly extending standard 23, the upper end which is bifurcated and slidably f the fixed rod 24 mounted in.
"ta 7 and 1 1'. Between the bifur- 1" standard 23 and loosely i the is the block 25 ch support carries the side guide 26. 1e block 25 preferabl rectangular in crosssection and a fiat spring 27 is fixed to he side wall of the standard 23 its free enoi impinging" against the side of the block 25 which tends to keep the guide-arm 26 at practically right angles with the standard and. yet will adi'nit of its being raised when necessary,
normally expanded spring 28 surrounlils the shaft 21 between a. suitably fixed collar 29 upon said shaft and the side wall of the standard 12 in which said shaft is mounted, this spring keeping the shaft 21 normally thrust contrary to the active efforts of the cam 17 thus between them, imparting a reciprocating motion thereto, which operates the side guide-arm 26, as in registering a blank sheet for l d side-guide being adjustable to J sized sheetsas is evident. lvlfeaus for row ring the shaft 2 and thereby longitudinally positioning the side guidearm the shaft for such adjustment, com .5, prise the handoperative crank 21 beyond the end A second shaft 80 is mounted longitudinally in the frame 10 within the upright- 32 and projection 31, this shaft 30 being somewhat above and a little to one side of the shaft 21.
A small roller 32 is mounted upon a laterally projecting pin 33 in the outer end of 'the shaft 30 and rides upon. the tapered extension 10 of the frame 10 and is engaged by the inclined dog-finger 4, when the latter is raised and lowered by the action of the press above described.
li' mediate its bearings, the shaft 30 e upwardly extending member 34, of which is mounted upon and no rod 24 and above said rod the bifurcated or formed with a V therein, in which is held and operated the l'lowl'i'wardly projecting lug 36 the reciprocating member 37 which operates the. cross-arms 38 and 39. The inner ends of those c1ossarms are supported, one pivotally stationary at 38' and the other slidably and pivotally operative upon the oscillating carriage 40 which is pivotally mounted within the top of the standard 12 by means of the pin ell. The supporting member the carriage 40 is elongated and int tee. as at 111 the end sluilably supthe arm 39 and grooyed in such a manner as to properly retain the slidably reciprocating member 37, which pivotally carries and operates the inner end of the arm 39. he'outer ends of the cross arms 38 and 39 are pivotally fixed to a cross arm 4.3 which pivotnlly and removnbly supports the registering lingers A pin is fixed within the arm 38 intermediate its ends and extends upward through a crescent shaped slot 39' within the arm 39 which connection directs the travel of the fingers 44 in such a manner that they are extended and withdrawn in substantially a parallel position and moved slightly toward the guide-arm 26 in their holncward stroke, which is due to the single arm 39 performing it being operated back and forth by the 111 36 of the member 37 engaging the slot 35 in the member 34 and being operated thereby. The registering fingers 44 are prefcrably attached to the under side of the cross arm 43 by means of large flat headed screwbolts 46 which enter suitably threaded holes through the cross-arm 43 and hold the bifurcated ends of the fingers intermediate the heads of the bolts and the under side of the crosshrm. These bolts are preferably formed with a square hole 47 longitudinal their centers, into which a square ended Wrench may be operated for adjusting the same. Tips 44 of some suitable soft material such as leather or rubber are attached to the under side of the outer ends of the rigors 44 for engagement with the paper sheets.
The shaft 30 carries securely fixed thereto and intermediate the supports 12 and 13 the upwardly extending elongated cam -18 rounded somewhat on topns at 48 and havl mg a gr ove 49 in one side thereof and pan l I l l allcl with the shaft 30. Within the groove and attached to the innermost lower wall thereof is :1 fiat leaf spring 50 which, all. its
free end, extends upward and beyond the oppositecnd of the grooves as seen in Figs.
and 4 lly attached to the upper extremity of ill-1': supporting member 13 the arm 5i extending to a point just underneath the (3: riago 40 and forward of the pivotal pin thereof. At its extreme innermost end the arm 51 is turned tip at practically right angles and engages by contact the under side of said carriage frame as at 52 and thereby supports the carriage normally on a level plane. A small roller 53 is plvoted to the inner side of the arm 51 in such a manner as to engage the upwardly rounded surface 48 of the cam 4-8 when the latter is thrust toward the support 13 which, it is evident, will raise the free end f the arm 51 and thereby tip up the forward or finger side of the carriage 4O lifting the fingers 44- thcrcwith. v
