CENTERING TOOL AND PUNCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 29, 1911.
Patented June 11, 1912. Serial No. 630,024.
.To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, GILBERT U. MAYs, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Butler, in the county of Butler and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Centering Tools and Punches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a combined centering tool and punch, and the main object of my invention is to provide a tool or instrument for determining the center of a circle, the longitudinal axis of a cylindrical or rectangular body, and a point equi-distant from other points.
Another object of the invention is to furnish a tool or instrument of the above type with a movable center head or punch for marking or punching the center of a piece of work.
A further object of the invention is to provide a tool or instrument of the above type having coperating movable gaging arms adapted to move in unison to center the holder of said arms.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawings, wherein like numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which j Figure 1 is a plan of the tool. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan of the tool with the casing thereof removed, and Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view of the tool.
A tool in accordance with this invention comprises a circular base plate 1 having a dependinof annular rim 2 and equally spaced radially disposed extensions 3. Detachably mounted upon the circular base plate 1 is a circular casing 4 having' the lower edge thereof provided with inwardly projecting apertured lugs 5 adapted to receive screws 6 extending through openings 7 provided therefor in the base plate 1. The casing 4 has equally spaced radially disposed hous-A ings 8 and 9 arranged over the extensions 3. The outer ends of the housings 8 are provided with transverse slots 10 and slidably mounted in said slots are arms 11 and 12, the arm 12 resting upon the plate 1 and the arm- 11 resting upon the transverse rib 13 of the extensions 3 of said plate. The arm 12 has the top thereof provided with a rack 14 and the side thereof with a rack 15, the rack 14 being located at one edge of the arm and the rack 15 upon the side of said arm at the opposite edge. The rack 14 meshes with a pinion 16 mounted upon a shaft 17, j ournaled in an inwardly projecting bearing 18 carried by the casing 4. The pinion 16 meshes with a depending rack 19, carried by the arm 11 at one edge thereof. The same edge of the arm 11 has a rack 20 meshing with a vertical double pinion 21 revolubly supported by a pin 22 of the plate 1. The lower end of the pinion 21 meshes with a rack 23 on one longitudinal edge of an arm 24 slidably mounted in an opening 25 of one of the housings 9. The rack 15 of the arm 12 meshes with another double pinion 26 revolubly supported by the plate 1, and the lower end of the pinion 26 meshes with a rack 27, carried by the longitudinal wall of a slot 28 formed in another arm 29 slidably mounted in the other housing' 9.
The arms 11, 12 and 24 have longitudinal slots 30 and these slots coperate with the slot 28 in providing clearance for a vertical centering pin or punch 31 movably mounted in openings 32 and 33 provided therefor in the casing 4 and the base plate 1 respectively. The lower end of the pin or punch 31 is tapered or pointed, as at 34 and the upper end provided with a head 35. Encircling the pin or punch 31 between the under side of the head 35 and the top of the casing 4 is a coiled compression spring 36, said spring having the lower convolution thereof seated in a socket 37 provided therefor in the top of the casing 4. The top of the arm 11 is provided with an eye 38 and the inner side of the casing 4 is provided with an enlargement 39 having an eye 40. The eyes 38 and 40 are connected by a coiled retractile spring 41. The outer ends of the arms 11, 12, 24 and 29 have depending enlargements 42 supporting dependingy gaging pins 43 provided with contact heads 44 adapted to contact with the outer or inner walls of a piece of work 45. The outer ends of the extensions 3 are slotted, as at 46 to provide clearance for the pins 43 when the arms are in a retracted position.
When one of the arms is moved outwardly or inwardly relatively to the casing 4, all of said arms are moved, the arms moving in unison through the medium of the racks and double and single pinions. It is apparent that the arms can be easily shifted whereby the contact heads 44 will engage the outer sides of the piece of work or the inner walls of a hollow cylindrical piece of work, the instrument being principally used in connection with a solid piece of work, whereby the pin or punch 31 can be struck a blow to mark a center point upon the piece of work.
The instrument in its entirety is made of strongand durable metal and can be made of various sizes.
What I claim is 1. A centering device comprising a base plate, a casing mounted thereon, radially disposed overlapping shiftable arms extending in said casing, each of a pair of said arms provided with a pair of racks, one rack being disposed at ,right angles with respect to the other, t-he other of said arms provided with longitudinal racks, pinions arranged within the casing and engaging with said racks for shifting the arms in unison when one of said arms is moved, means arranged within said casing for retaining said arms in a retracted position, and a spring controlled punch extending through the inner ends of said arms and said base plate.
2. A centering device comprising a' base plate, a casing mounted thereon, radially disposed overlapping shiftable arms eX- tending in said casing, each of a pair of said arms provided with a pair of racks, one rack being disposed at right angles with respect to the other, said arms being slotted, another of the said arms having a rack on one longitudinal edge and the other Vof said arms having a longitudinal rack at one of the walls of its slot, and pinions engaging with Copies of this patent may be obtained `for saidwracks for shifting the arms in unison when one of said arms is moved.
3. A centering device comprising a base plate, a casing mounted thereon, radially disposed overlapping shiftable arms eX- tending in said casing, each of a pair of said arms provided with a pair of racks, one rack being disposed 'at right angles with respect to the other, said arms being slotted, another of the said arms having a rack on one longitudinal edge and the other of said arms having a longitudinal rack at one of the walls of its slot, pinions engaging with said racks for shifting the arms in unison when one of said arms is moved, and means within said casing for retaining said arms in a retracted position. v
4. A centering device comprising a base plate, a casing mounted thereon, radially disposed overlapping shiftable arms eX- tending in said casing, each of a pair of said arms provided with a pair of racks, one rack being disposed at right angles with respect to the other, said arms being slotted, another of the said arms having a rack on one longitudinal edge andthe other of said arms having a longitudinal rack at one of the walls of its slot, pinions engaging with said racks for shifting the arms in unison when one of said arms is moved, means within said casing for retaining said arms in a retracted position, and a spring controlled punch extending through the slots of said arms and further extending through said base plate.'
In testimony whereof I aiiiX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
