IMPROVEMENT IN PAPER-FILES.

To whom it may canoe-rip Be it known that I, EDWIN J. Cantu, of the city of La Porte, in the county of La Porto and State of Indiana, have invented a new and-useful Improvemcnt in Paper-Files; ,and I" do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, relcrcnce being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference. marked thereon, and beinga part of this specification.

The nature of this invention relates to an improve meat in paper-files, and consists in a novel guard-plate or thumb-plate, D, hereinafter described, and in the combination and. arrangement of its several parts, more particularly described below.

In the draWingsp A represents the plate by which the file is suspended,

provided with a proper opening near its top for that v purpose.

To the center vertically of this plate, in a proper sleeve secured thereto, a wire is firmly attached, which. wire, passing downward below said plate, is cru'yed outward and upward, making the hook B, which t'er- -1niuates in a sharp point nearly opposite tlrecenterof the plate A, and at a little distance from it.

Similarly'thewire passingto near the top ofthe plate A, and bending outward and downward, making the hook O, is providcdwith a guard, 1*, a little larger than the wire itself, which guard has a suitable recess for the reception of the point oi the hook B.

Athumb-plate, D, provided with a suit-able opening,

. is attached to a wire, which, in turn, is sccuredt-o the center vertically of the plate A, a little above its horizontalccnter, and is bent down a little, so that, the

outer end of tlic thumb-plate presses continually against the hook B, a little below its point.

\ The spring of the thumb-platcis outward, and that of the hooks B and G is inward.

' hen the point of the hook B is disengaged fronr the guard F, for the purpose of filing or removing papers, the spring of the hook G and of the guard-plate l) carries the guard F into the opening in the guardplate, as shown by the dotted line E, and secures all papers which may be upon the hook O; at the same time, the outward pressure of the guard-plate secures all papers which may be upon the hook B.

In tiling papers the point of the hook Bis disengaged from the guard F, and the papers are pressed down over said point. If tliereis a great accumulation of papers, those already upon the file,'or a portion of them, may he slipped up over the guard 'F upon the hook. 0- before other papers are placed upon the hook B. So in withdrawing particular papers, those above it may he slipped up over' the guard l Pefore the point of the hook B isdisengaged, and the required papers removed.

The advantages of thisdevice may be found in the security in therctention of papers, and the convenience in handling them.

Having thusfully set forth the nature and merits of my device,

The paper-file above described, consisting of the plate A, the hooks B "and O, the thumb-plate D, and the guard I", constructed, combined, and arrauged to operate as and for the purpose set forth.
