IMPROVEMENT 1N, BEELHIVES. n
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Be it known thatI,WILLI1\r GoURTNnY, of Richv1ew,.1n the countyof Washington and State 'of Illi- `nois,'h,ave invented newand useful Improvements in Bee-Hives; and I do hereby decla-re that the following ls a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference lbeing had to the annexed drawings. making part of this specification, 'in which-' d Figure 1 is a vertical 'section of a bee-hive, embodymg my improvements. l
Figure 2 is a section on line a: x of fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of one of the frame dividers. f
The same letters are used in the several ligures to designate identical'ports. c My invention relates to bee-hives of that class de-C scribed in Letters Patent of the United States granted to me December 3l, 1867 and l My improvements consist in the construction of the honey-.frames andthe movable 'frame-dividers, and in their combination with the other parts of a bee-hive. y j y .'lo enable those skilled in the art to make audnse my invention, I wllproceed to describe its construction and operation.
y In the'annexed drawings e' A represents the main portion ofa bee-hive, which I prefer to constrnct'in the manner set forth in said Letters Patent.` v B is la cap, placed upon the main portion "of thc hive, and covering the surplus-honey box C, which I propose to separate from the honey-frames by sectional honey-boards D. l
.It is not deemed necessary to describe the aboveenumerated parts in detail, as they form no part of my presenti invention, and may be sufficiently understood by referring tothe drawings. y
In the main chamber of theI hive a series of movable honey-frames, E, is to be placed in the usual man- It is found to be desirable that the sides of these frames should be held a short` distance from the sides ofthe chambers. This I el'ect by screws E', screwed into the end pieces of the trames at a proper point, so that the heads of such screws brace against the sides of the hive, as shown in iig. 1.
By these screws the distance between the ends of the vhoney-frames and the walls of the hive, can be' of the proper length, having asl many notches cut'in f one side,'at equal distances apart, as it is intended to have frames inthe hives, `such notches being made of the width of' the upper cross-bar of the flames.
After the honey-trames have been inserted in- `the hive, one divider is placed over'` the frames at each end, so that the projections formed on such dividers i hold them equal distances apart.
I do not claim any particular portion of this hive independently, for I am aware that analogous devices have been resorted to, to effect the same purposes.
Nor do I claim, broadly, the support of the frames in both directions, for other devices have been used for the same purpose.
My claim is limited tothe particular means em ployed, and
What I do claim as my'invention, and desire'to sen cure by Letters Iatent, is y The combination of the honey-frames E, constructed. with screws l", to maintain them in their relations to the walls of the hive, and the movable frame-dividers F, to preserve thel spaces between the frames, s'nb` stantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in th'e presence of two subscribing witnesses.` A Y l XVILLIAM COUR'INE Y.
