UNITED STATES P A TENT OFFICE.
OTTO A. WOLF, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR T0 GEORGE B. HURD-& COMPANY, 01? NEW YORK, N. Y., A COPARTNERSHIP.
DISPLAY-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J une 11 1912 Application filed March 29, 1912. Serial No. 687,029.
Be it known that I, OTTO A. WOLF, a citizen of the United States, residing at the borough of Manhattan, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display-Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof.
My invention relates to display boxes, and more particularly to a box adapted to receive and store writing paper and envelops or other similar articles when closed, and when opened to position the contents of the box in a manner to not only display the same to advantage, but also to disclose the entire contents of the box.
The main object of the invention is to provide a display box-of this character having a hinged cover adapted to close the box, and an automatically movable tray mounted in the box in a manner to have one edge thereof raised simultaneously with the opening of the cover of the box, and by means which will be concealed when the box is closed and inconspicuous when the box is open.
A further object is to provide a box of this character wherein, when the box is open for display purposes, the bottom of the box and the cover will counterbalance each other so as to revent an accidental closing of the box or its overbalancing in a manner to cause the contents thereof to be scattered about a counter or show case.
A still further object is to provide a display box of the character described which will permit access to the entire contents without necessitating the handling of said contents b prospective customers.
A still urther object is to provide a box of this character wherein the tray or supplemental bottom will be raised at one edge thereof by means of the cover and will be automatically restored to its normal position when the cover is closed, through the weight of the contents thereon.
A still further object is to provide a box of this character wherein the body of the box and also the lid thereof will be adapted to contain merchandise in a manner to permit the distribution of the contents of the box, so that when open, such contents will be displayed, while at the same time placing no limitation upon the capacity of the box. And a still further object is to provide a display box of this character, which may be cheaply produced and will permit of the attractive packing of merchandise at small expense.
The invention consists primarily in a display box comprising a box part, a cover hinged thereto adjacent to the bottom thereof, a movable bottom in said part, the edge of said bottom adjacent to said cover being connected with a collapsible support hinged to said box part adjacent to said cover, a flexible connection extending from said collapsible support to adjacent the top of said cover, and extending over the edge of the box part, whereb the opening of said cover will extend sai collapsible support and raise said bottom, and the/closing of said cover will permit said bottom to drop withinsaid bottom part; and in such other novel features of construction, and combination of parts, as are hereinafter set forth and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
Referring to the drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box embodying my invention, shown in the open osition; Fig. 2 is a vertical section thereof in the open position; and Fig. 3 is a similar section in a closed position.
Like letters refer to the several views.
In the embodiment of my invention, shown in the drawings, a indicates one part of the box, one side of which as a is lower than the remaining sides.
Hinged adjacent to the forward side of the box part is a movable bottom I), the rear edge of which is adapted to be raised by a collapsible support 0 consisting of a strip of cardboard or other suitable material, scored and bent centrally thereof so as to form two sections c'c united by a hinge and having a normal tendency to fold toward and beneath said bottom I). Preferably this collapsible support 0 extends the entire width of the bottom I) so as to afford support therefor at all points, and prevent the accidental displacement of the bottom I) or the matter carried thereby. One edge of this support 0 is hinged to the bottom I) and the other edge thereof to the bottom of the side a of the box proper. The dimensions of the support like parts throughout eringof the bottom Z).
The cover d is provided with the sides 1, but to avoid a possible binding of the cover upon the bottom part a, the'front of the cover is left open as shown.
To permit the distribution of the contents of the box in a manner to permit their being displayed through themere opening of the box without the necessity for handlin the merchandise, I provide thecover d with a strap h, extending across same, this strap being spaced away from the body of the cover to permit goods to be secured to the cover thereby and to cause them to have movement with said cover. By this arrangement, the goods carried by the cover will fold within the box as the cover is .closed, thus causing the mere closing of the box to i'epack the goods and permit the box to be used with full capacity. Incidentally, this arrangement permits the public to ins ect thecontents of the box without handling, which is a matter of great importance in certain articles, such as writing paper where handling will .quickly soil the paper or envelops.
The operation of the herein described device is substantially as follows :A box of the character herein described is particularly adapted for use in connection with writing paper and envelops, and in packing the boxes, the envelops are placed upon the bottom I) and the writing paper is secured to the cover by means of the strap h. when the box is opened to permit the paper and envelops to be packed therein, the cover will move upon its hinge below the to edge of the side a. Hence as the top 0? the box moves in an arc away from the art a thereof, the flexible connection or ribbon e will be drawn away from the box part in a manner to extend the collapsible support 0, the lower section 0 of which will be raised, forcing the other section 0' thereof upwardly in a manner to raise the -bottom b and pitch it from the back of the box toward the front. The arts, when the box is open, assume the position shown in Figs.
1 and 2. hen the box is in this position, the envelo s or paper resting upon the bottom 1) of tiie box will be pro ected at an angle with the greater portion thereof showing above the sides of the box part a in a manner to expose the entire number of the envelops resting upon the bottom I). At the same time, one side of the cover f will rest upon the show case or other support for the box and will be held in this position in a manner to prevent the toppling of the box through the weight of the cover, while at the same time sustaining the weight of the goods resting upon the bottom I). In this position, the paper or other goods secured to the cover by means of the strap it will be fully exposed to the public, the weight of these goods, incidentally, serving to counterbalance that weight upon the bottom 0.
In closing the box, it will be observed, the
weight of the cover and its contents is removed from the flexible connection or ribbon 6, thus permitting the support a to collapse under the weight of the goods thereon, the bottom I) dropping automatically to its normal position and the box being automatically repacked by the mere closing of the cover.
It will be observed that in handling the. goods, in order to display the same, the salesman need merely open the box, thus fully disclosing the contents thereof without a necessity for handling the goods them selves, and that whenhe has completed showing the goods, they may be prepared to be returned to stock by merely closing the cover of the box.
It is not my intention to limit the invention to the precise details of construction shown in the accompanying drawings, it being apparent that such may be modified without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to have protected by Letters Patent, is
1. A display box comprising a box part, a cover hin ed thereto, adjacent to the bottom thereo a movable bottom in said part, a collapsible support, one edge of which is hinged to said part adjacent to 'said cover, and the other edge of which is hinged to said bottom, and a flexible connection extending from said collapsible supportover the edge of the box part, to said cover. whereby the opening of said cover will through said flexible connection extend said collapsible support and raise said bottom, and the closing of said cover will permit said bottom to drop within said box part.
2. A display box embodying therein a box part having one low side, a cover hinged adjacent to said low side and to the bottom thereof, a movable bottom in said part, a collapsible support, one edge of which is hinged adjacent to said low side, and the other edge of which is hinged to said bottom, and a flexible connection extending from said collapsible support over said low side to the top of said cover, whereby the opening of said cover will extend said collapsible support and raise said bottom, and the closing of said cover will permit said bottom to drop within said part.
3. A display box, comprising a box part, a cover hinged thereto, adjacent to the bottom thereof, a movable bottom in said part one edge of which is hinged adjacent to the bottom of said part, and the other edge of which is adapted to be raised and lowered, a collapsible support, one edge of which is hinged to said part adjacent to said cover,
and the other edge of which is hinged to said bottom, and a flexible connection extending from said collapsible support over the edge of the box part to sald cover, whereby the opening of said cover will through said flexible connection extend said collapsible support and raise said bottom, and the closing of said cover will permit said bottom to drop within said box part.
4. A display box, comprising a box part, a cover 11in ed thereto, adjacent to the bottom thereo a movable bottom in said part, a collapsible support comprising two sections hinged together and adapted to fold beneath said bottom, one edge of which is hinged to said part adjacent to said cover, and the other edge of which is hinged to said bottom, and a flexible connection extending from said collapsible support over the edge of the box part, to said cover, whereby the opening of said cover will through said flexible connection extend said flexible support and raise said bottom, and the closing ofsaid cover will permit said bottom to drop within said box part.
5. A display box embodying therein a box part having one low side, a cover hinged adjacent to lower edge of said low side, a
movable bottom in said part, a collapsible support comp-rising two sections hinged together and adapted to fold beneath said bottom, one edge of which is hinged adjacent to said low side, and the other edge of which is hinged to said bottom, and a flexible connection extending from said collapsible support over said low side to the top of said cover, whereby the opening of said cover will extend said collapsible support and raise said bottom, and the closing of said cover will permit said bottom to drop within said part.
6. A display box comprising a box part, a cover hinged thereto adjacent to the bottom thereof, a portion of said cover opposite to said hinged side thereof having no pendant side, whereby a binding of said cover upon the box is prevented, a movable bottom in said part, a collapsible support, one edge of which is hinged to said part adjacent to said cover, and the other edge of which is hinged to said bottom, and a flexible connection extending from said collapsible support over the edge of said box part, to said cover, whereby the opening of said cover will through said flexible connection extend said collapsible support and raise said bottom, and the closing of said cover will permit said bottom to drop Within said box part.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto affixed my signature, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 26th day of March, 1912.
