HAT-PIN GUARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all {whom if may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT C. DE SHEP- PARD, a citizen of t-he United States, residing at Bloomsburg, in thecounty of Columbia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Hat-Pin Guard, of which thefollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to hatpin guards. The object of the invention is to provide a simple, thoroughly effective and easily applied and removed guard for hat pins, that will not only be positive in preventing the clamping member co-acting with the ,f juiole` and a closure for the sheath constituting a means for directing a pin point between the guide and the clamping member. The sheath is constructed from a cylinder of metal, permanently closed at one end and provided at its other end with an out-turned bead that is designed to be engaged by the closure around which the bead is iianged to hold the two parts assembled. The closure is inwardly dished, and is provided at its .apex with an orifice that alines with the meeting point of the guide and the clamping member, the former of which is provided with a longitudinal groove, and with inclined ends, one of which serves to direct the pin point into the groove, and the latter ofwhich is resilient, and is preferably also provided with a channel to mate with that of the guide to serve more eectively to assist in assembling the guard with the pin.
Further and more specic details of construction will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts: Figure 1 is a view in side eleva-A tion displaying a hat pin equipped with the guard of the present invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view on an enlarged scale, through the guard. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a perspective detail view of the guide. Fig. 5 is a similarv view of the clamping member or spring.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the sheath of the guard which is of tubular form and has one end2 permanently closed, andthe other end provided with an outturned head 3. The sheath may be made of any suitable met-al, and be plain, or ornamented in any manner to produce a neat and artistic appearance. Arranged within the sheath is a guide' which is constructed from a length of metal provided at each end with oppositely inclined terminals 4, soldered, riveted or otherwise secured to the sheath the body portion 5 of the guide as well as the ends, being provided with a longitudinal channel 6, the function of which is to facilitate the positioning of the guard `on the pin, and to prevent the point of the lat-ter from coming into contact with the inner surface of the sheath which would tend to dull the former. inclining the terminals or lugs 4; of the guard, and both at the same inclination, is
to provide a means for facilitating the assemblage of the guard with the pin, and also to render unnecessary t-he selection of the end that is to be inserted within the sheath in assembling the parts, as it will be immaterial which end is rst entered.
Co-acting with the guide is a combined guide and clamp 7, in the form of a' twoleafed spring, one leaf or branch 8 of which bears against the inner wall of the sheath, and the other leaf 9 projects forwardly, and its terminal portion is designed to bear against the guard, and is formed with an outturned end which will prevent the pin point from entering laterally between the arms of the clamp. In order to constitute the clamp member a guide, the leaf 9 is provided adjacent to each terminal with a longitudinal channel 11 and 12 respectively, the former of which co-acts with the portion -of they guide adjacent to the entrance mouth of the sheath, and the latter with therear end portion of the guide. The channels in the two parts are designed to mate, and are disposed opposite a central orifice 13 formed in a dished or cone-shaped closure 14 that is designed to fit within the bead 3, and to be held therein by having the edges of the latter flanged over as shown at 15.
It is designed that the spring shall be of such tension, that it will clamp the pin against the guide with suficient force t0 preclude the possibility of accidental separation, so that loss will be prevented. The

The improvements herein described, whilel simple in character, will be found thor-= oughly effective for the purposes designed,
and will co-act in the lpresei'ita'tion of a simple, durable and highlyA practical form of guard.
I claim:
