RAILWAY-CROSSING.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CARL ULsH and GEORGE ULsH, citizens of the United States, residing at Marion, in the county of Marion and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway- Crossings of which the following is a'specification.
This invention has relation to track crossings and has for its object to provide at the points of intersecting railway tracks means for bridging one of the tracks, whereby the flanged passageway along the same is closed so that the rolling stock may pass freely and readily over the'intersecting track without pounding, bumping or jarring.
With this object in view, the invention consists, in combination with a continuous track, of a cross or intersecting track having pivoted tongues or sections adapted to be moved over the rails of the fixed track. The intersecting track is somewhat higher than the main track andmanually operable means is provided for swinging the said tongues so that they may be disposed across the rails of the main track. This means is also susceptible of manipulation so that the tongues may be swung back from over the rails of the main track. Also a locking device is provided for holdingthe tongues in position when they are disposed across the rails of the main track.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a plan View of the crossing; Fig. 2 is a perspective'view of portions of cables used upon the same; Fig. 3 is aside elevation with part in section of a pulley used with the crossing; F ig. 4 is a sectional view of a plate used with the crossing out on the line 44 of Fig. l.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and india cated in all the views of the accompanying drawing by the same reference characters.
As indicated in the accompanying drawing the rails 1 indicate those of themain track and the rails 2 indicate those of the crossing or intersecting track. Plates 3 are located under the rails 1 and-the ends of the rails 2 are secured to the outer parts of the said plates 3. Track sections 4 are located between the rails. 1 and in alinement with the rails 2. The said sections 4 are secured at their ends to the plates 3 and the Specification of Letters Patent.

The rails 2 and the sections 4 are somewhat higher than the rails 1. Tongues 6 are pivoted upon the plates 3 at the ends of the rails 2 and are located beyond the outer sides of the rails 1. The free ends of these tongues are beveled as at 7, and when the tongues 6 are swung across the rails 1 the beveled ends 7 thereof meet the beveled ends 5 of the sections 4 and thus the rails l are bridged and the trackway from the rails 2 to the sections 4 is made continuous.
Means is provided for swinging all of" the tongues 6 simultaneously,,and this means consists in connecting the tongues 6 together by means of rods 8. The rods 8 are located one beyond the outer side of each of therails 1. That is to. say the tongues 6 at the same side of the rail 1 are connected together. A shaft 9 is journaled transversely of the rails 2 and under the same and is provided with a handle lever 10. Pulleys 11 and 12 are mounted upon the shaft 9, the'pulley 12 being fixed and the pulleyll being loose so that the shaft 9 may have a certain amount of limited rotary movement within the pulley 11 without turning the same. A cable 13 is fixed at one end to the pulley 11 and a cable 14 is fixed at one end to the pulley 12. These cables are arranged to Wind upon their respective pulleys in reverse direction, the cable 13 passing under the pulley 11 and the cable 14 passing over the pulley 12. The intermediate portions of the cables 13 and 14 are trained around pulleys 1,5 and the ends of the said cables remote from the shaft 9 are attached to the inner sides of the nearer tongues6. Cables 16 and 17 are attached at theirends to the cables 13 and 14 respectively and extend under the rails 1' and are'trained about pulleys 18 and are secured at their ends to the inner sides of the remote tongues 6. Therefore it will be seen that When the shaft 9 is turned in one direction, the cable 13 will unwind from the pulley 11 and the cable 14 will wind upon the pulley 12. The said cables Will move the cables 16 and 17 correspondingly and thus all of the tongues 6 are swung across the rails 1 and the tongues are brought into alinement with the rails 2.
the tongues 6 in position in alinement with the rails 2 and these devices are located one, at each of the plates 3. All of these devices are connected together for simultaneous operation in locking and releasing the tongues. All of these devices are operatively connected with the shaft 9 hereinbefore described. Each locking device consists of a shaft 19 having a beveled head 20 which is adapted to project up through the aperture provided in the plate 3. The shaft 19 is provided at its end opposite that end at which the head 20 is located with a crank arm 21. A pulley 22 is mounted upon the shaft 19 and a cable 23 is arranged to wind upon the said pulley. The said cable extends to the crank arm 21 of the nearer shaft 19 to which it is attached, then extends across and under the rails land is connected with the crank arm 21 of the shaft beyond the more remote rail. The said cable is then trained around pulleys 2 1 journaled under the plates 3 which are more remote from the shaft and is connected with the crank arms 21 of the shafts 19 opposite to those hereinbefore mentioned. A return spring 25 is attached at one end to one of the plates 3 and is connected with the end of the cable 23 at or about the terminal locking device of the series. Therefore when the shaft 9 is rotated to move the tongues 6 to closed positions, the lower edges of the tongues will ride over the beveled heads 20 ofthe shafts 19 and depress the same, but as soon as the tongues 6 have cleared, the ends of the heads 20, the tension of the spring 25' through the cable 23 will turn the shaft 19 in an opposite direction so that the edges of the heads 20 will be carried up along the sides of the tongues 6 and thus the said tongues are locked in alinement with the rails 2. When it is desired to swing the tongues 6 to open positions, the shaft 9 is turned as hereinbefore indicated and inasmuch as the pulley 12 is positively fixed to the said shaft, the cable 23 will wind promptly thereon and the shafts 19 will be turned so that the heads 20 are carried below the lower edges of the tongues 6. During this time the pulley 11 has remained at rest, but after the heads 20 are depressed as indicated the said pulley 11 becomes positively engaged with the shaft 9 and turns with the same,
and the tongues 6 along one of the rails 2 are swung in, which through their connecting rods 8 will move the tongues 6 correspondingly at the other rail 2.
The hub of the pulley 11 is slotted as at 26 and a pin 27 passes transversely through the shaft 9 and lies within the said slot. It is this pin and slot connection which permits the shaft 9 to make a partial turn without moving the pulley 11, but when the shaft 9 has turned sufliciently to remove the locking devices from the paths of movement of the tongues 6, the pin 27 engages the said pulley, whereby the said pulley is turned positively with the shaft.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A crossing comprising a main track and an intersecting track, tongues pivoted at the ends of the intersecting track and adapted to bridge the rails of the main track, means connecting the tongues at the same sides of the rails of the main track together, a shaft journaled transversely of the intersecting track, pulleys mounted thereon, and cables attached at one end with the pulleys and at their other ends with the tongues and arranged to wind in reverse directions upon the pulleys.
2. A crossing comprising a main track and an intersecting track, tongues pivoted at the ends of the rails of the intersecting track and adapted to bridge the rails of the main track, means connecting the tongues at the same sides of the rails of the main track together, a shaft journaled transversely of the intersecting track, pulleys mounted on the shaft, one of said pulleys being fixed to the shaft and the other having limited movement with relation to the shaft, and
cables attached at one end to the pulleys and at their other ends with the tongues and arranged to wind in reverse directions upon the pulleys.
3. A crossing comprising a main track and an intersecting track, tongues pivoted at the ends of the rails of the intersecting track and adapted to bridge the rails of the main track, means operatively connecting the tongues at the same sides of the rails ofthe main track together, a shaft journaled transversely of the intersecting track, pulleys mounted thereon, cables attached at one end to the pulleys and connected at their other ends 'with the tongues, said cables arranged to wind in reverse directions upon the pulleys, a series of. locking devices for the tongues, a third pulley mounted upon the said shaft, a cable connected at one end with the last mentioned pulley and connected with the units of the series of locking devices, and a return spring connected with the end of the last mentioned 7 cable which is remote from the shaft. whereby the cable 13 is drawn longitudinally 4. A railroad crossing, including continuous main track rails, discontinuous track rails spaced from the main track rails, tongues pivoted at the ends of the transverse track rails and adapted when turned in one direction to bridge the main track rails and connect the transverse track rails, means connecting the tongues, whereby the tongues shall shift together, locking devices shiftable in position to hold the tongues in their bridging position, an operating means, means operatively connect-ing the locking devices to the operating means, means operatively connecting the tongues to the operating means, there being a shifting engage ment between the tongue operating devices and the-said operating means, whereby to cause an operation of the tongue locking devices in advance of or subsequent to the actuation. of the tongues.
5. A crossing comprising a main track and a transverse track, tongues pivoted at the ends of the transverse track and adapted to bridge the rails of the main track, means connecting together the tongues at the same sides of the rails of the maintrack, an operating device, connections operatively connecting the tongues to the operating device, the connections to one pair of tongues being so engaged with the operating device that they move in reverse-directions to the connections of the other pair of tongues upon a movement of the shaft in one direction, locking devices disposed adjacent to each of the tongues and adapted when projected to CARL ULSH.
