Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern: A
Be it known that I, HAROLD T. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Willis, in the county of Brown and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil-Burnersg and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it a-ppertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to oil burners, and has for its object to provide oil feeding and spraying mechanism for that class of oil burners wherein the oil is atomized by a steam jet prior to its delivery through the burner mouth. In accomplishing this object, I have provided the improved details of structure hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure I is a horizontal section of an oil burner constructed according to my invention. Fig. II is an enlarged perspective view of the atomizer head.
Referring more in detail to the parts 1 designates a union having a large socket 2, into which is threaded one end of a pipe v3. Fixed onto the opposite end of pipe 3 is a burner tip 4,V having an offset shoulder 5 spaced inwardly from the pipe 3. The tip is preferably of a duck bill type and has a slot 6 in its end, through which the fuel may be discharged. In the union 1, is a channel 7, which opens into the pipe 3, near the center thereof, and extends through a boss 8 which carries a steam supply pipe 9; also extending through the union 1 is a channel 10, which extends through a boss 11 that carries an oil supply pipe 12. Connecting with the channel 10 and extending in line with the pipe 3, is a branch 13 which extends through a boss 14 that carries a stutlingv box 15. Seated against the end of pipe 3 and held thereto by the shoulder 5, of the tip 4, is the diaphragm 16 of an atomizer head 17. Extending from the forward side of head 17, at the center thereof, is a nozzle 18, which f points into the neck 19 of the tip 4, and on therethrough to prevent stoppage.

boss 21 is a stem 27, having a valve head 28 -I adapted for regulating the flow of oil through the port 23. The stem 27 is provided with a hand wheel 29, by which the seating of the valve may be regulated through the threaded connection of the stem with the ear 22.
Presuming the parts to be assembled as described, and the pipes 9 and 12 to be connected with a steam and oil supply respectively, steam passes through the pipe 9, tube 26 and channel 24 and is discharged in a jet from the end of the nozzle.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is t- 1. In an oil burner the combination with a tubular body, of a tip on said body, a head closing the tip end of said body, said head being provided with ay valve port and having a nozzle directed 'into said tip, a steam tube extending through the tubular Oil entering-pipe 12 is conducted to the pipe 3 where body and connecting with the nozzle in said head, means for supplying steam to said tube, means for admitting oil to the interior of said tubular member, and a valve for controlling the port in t-he burner head.
2. An oil burner comprising a union, a burner tip, a pipe connecting the union and tip, a head located within the tip and having a valve port and a nozzle directed into the tip, a steam tube extending throughv the pipe and communicating with said nozzle, means for supplying steam to said tube, means for admitting oil to the interior of said pipe, and a valve stem extending through said pipe and adapted for controlling the port in the burner head.
3. A burner comprising .a pipe having a union at one end and a burner tip at the other, a head located within the tip land having a channel and a valve port, a nozzle integral with the head and having a channel co-extensive with the channel in the head and having a spreading iiange spaced from the body of the head, a steam tube extending through the pipe and communicating with the head channel, a valve stem for controlling said valve port, and means for supplying oil to the interior of said pipe.
4'. A burner comprising a pipe having a union at one end and a burner tip at the opposite end, a head located within the burner` tip and having a nozzle projected toward the discharge mouth -o said tip, a tube connecting the nozzle in said head with the union, means for admitting steam to said tube, and means for admitting oil to the pipe, said head having a valve port, and a valve for controlling the flow of oil through said port.
5. The combination with a union, a
burner tip and a pipe connecting said parts,
of a head located within the burner tip and comprising a diaphragm for dividing the tip into separate chambers, said head having a boss on itsinner side provided with a depending apertured ear and having a Valve port in line with the aperture in said ear, a nozzle on the outer face of said head having an annular ange, said lange being spaced from the body of the burner tip to form an annular space between the edge of the flange and the body of the tip, a conduit for conducting steam from said union through the pipe to said nozzle, and means for delivering oill into the pipe around the steam conduit.
6. The combination with a union, av
burner tip and a pipe connecting said parts, of a head located within the burner tip and comprising a diaphragm for dividing the tip into separate chambers, said head having a boss on its inner side provided with a depending apertured ear and having a valve port in line with the aperture in said ear, a nozzle on the outer face of said head having an annular flange, said flange being spaced from the body of the burner tip to form an annular space between the edge of the flange and the body of the tip, a conduit for conducting steam from said union through the pipe to said nozzle, and means for delivering oil into the pipe around .the steam conduit, the edge of said flange being beveled outwardly, substantially as described.
