REGISTEBING Specification of Letters Patent.
SEAL-PRESS.
latented June i1, 1912.
Application filed June 21, 190. Serial No. 568,095.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, CARTER D. Smarrita, a citizen ot the United States, and a resident of Beattyville, in the county t Lee and State of Kentucky, have invented a new` and improved Registering Seal-Press, oi' which the following is a full, clear, and eX- act description.
rlhe invention has in view a press having associated therewith a register to indicate the number ot impressions taken, the press and register being so combined as to secure simplicity of construction and insure the positive operation of the register, access to the latter being had only by the removal ot' a closure, ordinarily in the nature of a hinged door, which door is normally locked and sealed, and is to be opened only by the proper oiiicer.
filhe registering press is particularly designed for the seals of States. lt is the practice in some ot the States of the United i States to furnish a seal press to each of its counties and make a prescribed charge tor each impression taken. At present there is no way ot checking on the oilicer having the press in charge. lilith my improved press, the State auditor or other proper oilicer keeps the key to the door affording access to the register, and in auditing or examining the accounts of the county clerk or other officer having the press in charge, takes the reading or" the press register and, if desired, opens the door by unlocking it and breaking the seal, and turns the register back to zero, the door being again locked and sealed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part ot' this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section through a registering seal press constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan ot the same, with the operating lever removed; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the press and register plungers.
rlhe press is constructed atter the general form or' the conventional seal or embossing' press, comprising the seating base 5, to the rear end of which is rigidly connected the overlianging arm G, in which the press plunger 7 is vertically slidable, the base 5 and the plunger 7 carrying the usual seal or einbossing dies 8 and 9 respectively.
In accordance with my invention, the ovrhanging arm (3 is recessed at one side adjacent to the plunger '7, to receive a register 10, the latter being plunger-actuated and otherwise of the usual or other preferred construction, and having the customary opening` ll, through which the register is readable. he recess in which the register is n rnially located is closed by a suitable closure l2, shown to be in the nature ot an ordinary hinged door, the closure being provided with a lock 18, and is, in addition to being locked, normally sealed. The register may be fastened to the inner side of the door or secured separately within tl e recess; in'
Vbearing plate l5 and the bottom wall of a recess 19 formed at the top of the arm 6. Adjacent to the recess 19 the actuating plunger let of the register is slidable through an opening in the arm G leading through the top wall ot the recess in which the register is located.
The press is operated in the usual way, as by depressing the operating lever l? to the dotted position shown in Fig. l, which not only brings the seal dies together to torni the impression, but simultaneously therewith by the plunger le-, actuates the register and thus records the impression taken.
With the door leading to the register locked and sealed, it is not possible to gain access to the register and tamper therewith without leaving clear traces ot the molestation behind, and with the key to the door in the hands orn the proper oiiicer, a check can be correctly kept on the number of impressions made with the press.
Having thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
The combination ot seal press comprising an overhanging arm having relatively long and relatively short parallel bores eX- tending vertically therein, and provided with a cavity between the upper ends of said bores and an enlarged recess below and coininunicat-ing with the shorter bore, a slidable die plunger mounted in the longer bore. a register actuating plunger slidable in the 5 short bore, a register mounted in said recess and with which said actuating plunger eoperates, a iiat cross head Connecting the upper ends of the two plungers in spaced relation, a spring seated in said cavity and 10 bearing upwardly against said cross head7 and a lever pivoted in the bore overhanging arrn and having a eain for engagementJ with the upper Surface of the said cross head.
In testimony whereof I have Signed my naine to this specification in the presence l5 of two subscribing witnesses.
