Description

aaa am SIDNEY emanan-or TABoR, IOWA, AssIeNoR ToHIMsELr'AND CHARLES i Leners Patent No. 102,883, dated May 1o, 1ero.
IMPROVEMENT IN LrournlMnTens.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part ofthe same,
' The nature of this inventionrelates to the construction of a: machine for measuring tlie flow or passi age of water by means of a cylinder having a piston,
the reciprocatory'motion 'of' which works a registeringdevice;'
This invention consists especially -in the construction and operation of the valve through which the liquid passes.
In the drawings- A' represents a cylinder, mounted on a suitable fiame, B, iu which cylinder' plays apiston, acted upon by theavater conclu through the pipes b c. y
In the frame or bed B isplaceda valve, C.
This valve, comprisingthe principles in this invention, is constructed as follows: V
A round i lvalve-Qchambcr, c, isprovided, having in the bottom four ports, eI cz e? e". f Y
The tirstptrt el is the inlet-port.
The ports c and c3 connect with the pipes b c, leading to either end of the cylinder, e* being vthe dis-v charge-port.
The valve Vconsists of a disk, d, having a circular groove, d', in its under side, long enough to cover and connect two of the ports. v
Opposite4 to this groove is a circular' slot, d, alsoV long enough t'o 'connecttwo of the ports.
` This slot is intended to permit the water to lill the valve-chamber abovethe valve,y so 'as to equalize the pressure upon the valve, the pressure il'pon the top keeping the valve close down upon its seat.'
The top of the valve-chamber is covered by a 'cap or cover, f, through which cover extends the valvestem, g, which valve-stemis attached to the valve by being set loosely in, a hole in the neck of theV valve, there being made two smallfslotsi in the neck of the valve, in which pins rest. 'This is to provide against tbevalve being disturbed from-its seat in case ofv any jarring or lateral motion of the valve-stem.
There is a,fran 1e, D,'attaohed to the lframe or bed B, which is placed over the valve, and in which the upper end of the valve-stem rests and turns.
cted into thecylinderat veach end,
The frame D is provided w-ith ways h h, in which a frame, E, attached to the pistou-rod F, slides.
A sleeve, 7c, having two armsv or levers, k k", is placed loosely on the valve-stem g,'resting upon a shoulder, g', of the stern.4
The lever k is connected to the frame E by the` l Seemed to the valve-stem g is a lever, m, which.
has two dogs, n n,ipivoted at its out-er end. These dogs are held down by a spring, a.
Two lsprings p p are provided, one end of each being attached to the sleeve lt, and the other end to the lever "nt, which, by their tension, will cause the` lever m to fly around quickly whenset at liberty.
Across the bed B is pla-ceda circular way, o, having i I a notchl at each vend, into which the dogs catch alternately, holding the lever m in place until released 'by the levers'k or lc"striking against the dogs, when they are raised, and, releasing -their hold, thelsprings force the lever around quickly, making a quarter turn, the valve being thus changed, the ports eand el being alternately covered and uncovered bythe grooves Ad It xvillbe observed by this arrangement the water passes (as 'seen in fig. 4) in the direction of the arrows, first-.through the port e into the chamber c, thence into the pert c2, and `on into the cylinder, through the pipe l), Vfmcingthe piston forward, and when-it arrives n'ear'the end, the .lever t" arrives at ands'tlikes the ,dog n raisin it releases the lever m which nick ies around, changing the valve so that the slot covers the ports el and-e, and the groove covers. the ports e" and c4, permit-ting the water-.to pass into the pipe c, y when a reverse motion is made by the piston, the water discharging through the port et."
Having thus described my invention,
What I desire to secure by Letters Patent `is-,
1. The valve C, having the groove d and slot d" seated in the valve-chamber c, and covering the ports,
as shown and for the purpose described.
2. The combination withthe valve-stem g, the le- ,ver m, provided with the dogs n n', the sleeve le having the leversk lt, the springs p p attached to the slecvelc and lever m, for actuating the` lever m, the pitma'n lfor connecting the lever k with the frame E,
the circular way o upon which the dogs slide and catch as shown, the whole being constructed, arranged, and operating upon the valve `fl as shown, and for Ithe purpose set forth anddescribed.
