Be it known that I, LEVI J. VALENTIivn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Plainview, in the county of Hale and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Door-Strip, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates generally to door strips and more particularly it comprehends a construction adapted lto be carried by a door for engagement with the floor o r sill and provides a construction wherein air and wind with any particles carried thereby may be kept. out of a room.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a new and improved door strip adapted to be carried by a door, the arrangement being such that when the door is open the strip is out of sight, the ends of the strip cooperating with certain means carried by the door casing whereby when the door is closed, the strip may be moved into operative position adjacent the floor or sill.
A further' object of my invention is to provide a simple and improved construction of the class described, the mounting thereof being such that the strip is adapted to lie closely adjacent the floor when the door is closed, even though the floor be irregular or lying in a different plane than that intended, due to settling of the building or other causes.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a partial front view of a door with the casing therefor showing the strip in operative position; Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 4; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 4; Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4 -4 of Fig. 2; Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4.
Any suitable door 1 is shown mounted between the opposite sides 2, 3, of the casing, the bottom .of the door being provided with a suitable recess 4 in which the strip 5 is resiliently held. As shown particularly in Figs. 2 and 4, the strip is of greater width than the door, the opposite sides of the casing being provided with recesses 6, 7, into which the opposite ends of the strip enter when the door is closed. While the strip' itself may be of any desired form of construction, the preferred form which I have shown is made up of an intermediate strip 8 of any suitable material, such as rubber or felt positioned between the outer members 9, 10, which are co-eXte-nsive with the intermediate strip.
The 'opposite sides of the doorV are provided with vertically extending recesses 11, 12, which may be closed by suitable plates 13, 14, the recesses housing helical springs 15, 16, the upper ends of the springs being suitably positioned on hooks'or other holding members 17, 18, secured to the door, the lower ends of the springs being in engagement with the strip through the medium of hooked ends 19, 20, secured to the strip in any suitable manner but preferably by passing through openings 21, 22. y
From what has been said it will be apparent that the strip is resiliently held .within the opening 4 in the door and if the depth of the opening is substantially equal to or greater than the width of the strip, the strip will be held out of view save when certain means engage therewith to bring it into view and adjacent the floor.
In order to provide for moving the strip adjacent the floor when the door is closed, my preferred means4 embody suitable springs positioned in the opposite sides 2,3, of the casing, these springs being of greater strength, however, than the springs 15, 16, positioned within the door.
The side 3 of the casing is provided with the aforementioned opening 6 which is adapted to house a movable bolt 24 having the lower end thereof beveled or tapered, as at 25; between thelower endv of the bolt 24 and t-heupper end 26 a helical spring 27 is positioned, one end of which is 'in engagement with the said upper end of the bolt, the other end being secured to a pin or any suitable device 28 carried by the casing whereby the bolt is permitted an upward movementagainst the tension of the spring 27. It is to be noted that the upper corner of the strip 5 which is adapted to enter into the recess 6 is tapered similarly tothe lower end 25 of the bolt 24, these parts being adapted for `engagement with each other. The side 2 of the casing is provided with the recess 7, as before mentioned, the lower part of this recess being provided with an opening 30 extending transversely thereof;

this recess 7 is adapted to house a bolt 81 having a tapered lower end 32 and an upper end 33, there being a spring 34: positioned within the recess 7, one end of which engages the upper end 33 of the bolt, the other end thereof being secured to a suitable pin 35 carried by the casing and extending into the recess 7 it is to be-noted that the lower end of the bolt 31 is tapered and that one side portion of the strip 5 which is adapted to engage the lower end ofthevbolt is also tapered, these two parts being adapted for engagement with eacli other in the closing of the door.
When the door is open the strip 5 is contained wholly within the recess or opening 4: in the bottom of the door, the ends of the strip projecting slightly beyond the door and being withdrawn from the openings or recesses 6, 7, in the opposite sides of the door casing. As the door is closed, the upper beveled corner of the strip 5 will engage the lower beveled face 25 of the bolt 24 whereby this end of the strip will be moved down against the tension of the spring l5, the beveled side of the other end of the strip coming into engagement with the lower beveled end of the bolt 31 whereby this end of the strip is also moved downwardly, thereby bringing the intermediate portion 8 of the strip into close engagement with the door or sill. By making the actuating means carried by the door casing resilient in construction I provide a simple way'of insuring the engagement of the strip with the Hoor at all times, this engagement being obtained whether the floor is horizontal or whether it lies in any other plane because of wear or of settling of the building; the resilient mounting of the strip provides for keeping it out of sight when the door is open, thereby materially reducing the wear on the intermediate portion and at the same time avoiding contact with any rugs or loose carpet on the floor thereby preventing the rugs being moved out of place and piling up under the door.

The combinationl with a door casing provided with vertical recesses and a lateral opening leading from one recess, and a door -having a recess in its lower end, of a strip in the recess of the door, said strip projecting beyond the edges ot the door into the recesses oit the casing, springs within the door and connected with the strip for holding it wit-hin the recess, and spring pressed bolts in the recesses of the casing and engaging said strip on an incline to force it out of the recess of the door when the door is closed.
2. The combination with a door -casing provided with vertical recesses and a lateral opening leading from one recess, and a door provided with a horizontal recess in its lower end, of a strip in the recess of the door, said strip being of a length greater than the width of the door and having its ends' beveled and projecting into the recesses of the casing, springs connected with the strip for holding said strip within the recess, bolts in the recesses of the casing and having beveled ends for engaging the beveled ends of the strip, and springs in said recesses and connected with the bolts and forcing the said bolts outward.
