Description

No. 653,432. Patented July I0, 1900. a. J. WINTER.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE J. WINTER, OF BUFFALO, NElV YORK.
DOOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 653,432, dated July 10, 1900. Application filed November 11, 1899. Serial No. 736,600- (No model.)
T0 0; whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, GEORGE J. WINTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Doors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved door having a weather-strip attached to the lower portion of the door which is adapted to be lowered by the closing of the door to close the intervening space between the bottom edge of the door and the floor and to raise upon the opening of the door; and the object of the invention is to form a door provided with a cheap and very simple device of the above character.
For a full understanding of the merits and advantages of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings and the following description.
The invention is susceptible to various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and to a full disclosure of the invention an adaptation thereof is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the door. Fig. 2 is a section on or about line a a, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on or about line b b, Fig. 2, with the Weather-strip in its elevated position. Fig. 4 is a detached view of one of the metal plates.
In referring to the'drawings in detail like numerals designate like parts.
1 represents the casing in which the door is supported, and a metal plate 2, preferably formed as shown in Fig. 4, is attached to the lower portion of one of the side walls of the casing, being set flush with said side wall. The door 3 is hinged to the casing by hinges 4 in the usual manner and is provided with a slot or depression 5 in its bottom edge which extends the entire length thereof. The outer end of this slot is closed by a metal plate 6, substantially similar to that shown in Fig. 4, the exterior of which is flush with the side edge of the door.
The weather-strip 7 which seats in the slot 5, is preferably constructed of wood and in the form shown in Fig. 3, and is provided with diagonally-extending openings 8, preferably two in number, which pass through its face, and a reduced end 9, which is formed by cutting away a portion of the top of that end. A rod 10 projects substantially horizontally from the side wall of this cutaway portion and a spiral spring 11 is mounted on said rod. In securing the strip 7 in place in the slot pins or bolts 12 are passed through the door and the openings 8.
The operation of my invention will be easily understood by reference to Fig. 3, in which the strip is shown in its raised position. Upon closing the door the protruding end 13 of the strip presses against the metal plate 2, forcing the strip inwardly against the tension of the spring 11, and owing to' the dia,,- onal inclination of the openings 8, through which the pins or bolts 12 pass, the strip is also forced downward, closing the intervening space between the bottom edge of the door and the floor. Upon the opening of the door.the spring forces the strip outwardly and upwardly, raising it'from the floor and permitting the door to swing easily. The pressure of the spring against the end 9 of the weather-strip causes the outer end 13 to press against the plate 2 and materially assists in opening the door. With easilyopened doors equipped with this device all one needs to do is to release the latch or look and the door will swing open itself under the pressure of the spring.
Any door can be easily and cheaply altered to permit the attachment of my improved device. The door being removed from its hinges, a depression or slot similar to the depression or slot 5 is cut in its bottom edge, a metal plate similar to the plate 2 is set in the lower end of the outer side edge of the door to close that end of the slot or depression, the weatherstrip and its operating parts are introduced and secured in place by pins 12, and a metal plate is set in the side of the door casing against which the end of the weather-strip presses.
A strip of rubber, carpet, or equivalent flexible material 14 is preferably attached to the lower edge of the weather-strip and adapts itself to the unevenness of the floor, thus serving to more thoroughly close the open ing between the door and the floor.
I claim as my invention The combination with a door-casing having a shallow depression in the lower portion of one of its sides, of a door mounted therein and having a central longitudinal slot extendin g throughout its bottom edge, a metal plate closing the outer end of said slot, and having its exterior flush with the side edge of the door, a weather-strip shaped to fit and operate in said slot and having the upper" portion of its outerend cutaway, and elongated openings having straight sides and extending diagonally with respect to said strip, a horizontal rod extending from the inner wall of the cut-away portion of the outer end, a spiral GEORGE J. \VINTER.
