HIRAM T. FERNALD, OF LOWELL, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO LAMSCN CONSOLI- DATED STORE SERVICE COMPANY, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
LOCKING DEVICE FOR CABLE CARRIERS.
Specificationof Letters Patent.
Patented June 4, 1912.
Application filed June 29, 1908. Serial No. 440,832.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HIRAM T. FERNALD, of Lowell, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looking Devices for Cable Carriers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in cable carriers and its object is to provide the same with a simple and effective locking device which will securely lock the cover of the carrier closed and prevent the cover from being released while the carrier is in transit.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate a construction embodying my invention, Figure 1 is a top plan view of an ordinary cable carrier equipped with the lock and showing the cover looked. closed. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of Fig. 1 showing the lock in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a top plan view showing the cover open and the lock in released position. Fig. 4 shows a portion of the carrier with the locking device secured thereto. Fig. 5 is a detail of the lock lever.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts throughout the several views.
A represents the body or receptacle portion of the carrier and B the cover for the same hinged on the pin G and held normally open by the usual helical spring D mounted on the pin C.
E is the ordinary fiber track plate secured to the bottom of the body A, and G is a metal plate secured to the fiber plate A, the two forming grooves or recesses F in each side thereof which are adapted to support and guide the carrier on the tracks.
H and J are respectively the movable and stationary jaw of the ordinary clamp secured to the bottom of the carrier for engaging the same with the driving cable.
011 the inside of the carrier is a hinge or support N secured by rivets to the front of the body A and carrying pivotally mounted therein a lock lever Mwhich has a stud or projection P extending through an opening T and which stud is adapted to cooperate with the free end of a spring Q which applies tension thereto to hold the lever M in looking or releasing position. The spring Q is secured at its opposite end to the body A by rivets E.
On the upper portion of the lock lever M is a latch L extending slightly above the top of the carrier and by which said lever M is operated. When the cover B is closed and it is desired to lock the same, the latch L is moved from the position shown in Fig. 3 to that shown in Fig. 1 when said latch cooperates with the slot V in the depression K in the top of the cover and engaging said depression locks the same securely closed. The tension of the spring Q, acting on the stud P tends to hold the lever M and latch L in looking position, but to prevent the possibility of the cover being unlocked while in transit, the finger O is provided on the lower end of the lever M and is adapted to project through an opening W into the groove 0r recess F when the latch L is in releasing position as shown in Fig. 3 so that,.with the latch L locking the .cover B closed, and the grooves F cooperating with the tracks, the tracks prevent the finger 0 from projecting through the slot W thereby preventing the latch L from being released while the carrier is in cooperation with the tracks.
Having thus described the nature of my invention and set forth a construction embodying the same, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a cable carrier adapted to travel on a track or way, a body portion, a cover hinged to the body portion, a lever pivoted to the body portion, a latch on the upper end of the lever to lockthe cover closed, a finger on the lower end of the lever to be engaged by the track or way to prevent the turning of the lever to release the latch from the cover, and yielding means for h0lding the latch in locked or unlocked positions.
2. In a cable carrier adapted to travel on a track or way, a body portion, a cover hinged to the body portion, a lever pivoted to the body portion, a latch on the upper end of the lever to lock the cover closed, a finger on the lower end of the lever to be engaged by the track or way to prevent the turning of the lever to release the latch from two subscribing Witnesses, this twenty-third the cover, a stud pro ecting from the lever, day of June, A. D. 1908.
and a spring bearing on the stud. to hold the lever so that the latch Will be held in locked 5 or unlocked positions.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of HIRAM T. FERNALD.
