PUMP-ROD COUPLING.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR L. DoUeLAss,
a citizen of the United States of America,
residing at Tularosa, in the county of Otero and State of New Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pump-Rod Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in couplings and particularly to couplings for pumps and has for an object the arrangement of an improved pump lift for permitting the ready coupling and uncoupling of the pump rod with a Wind mill rod.
A further object of the invention is the arrangement in a pump lift coupling of improved means for connecting the pump rod and the wind mill rod, which may be moved pivotally to its position and from its position for coupling the rods together and have a locking sleeve positioned over the pivotally mounted members for locking the same against movement when the rods are coupled together so as to positively insure a ,proper operation thereof.
With these and other objects in View the invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangement of parts, as will hereinafter be more fully described and claimed.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a side View of the invention applied. Fig. 2 is an enlarged edge view of the invention. Fig. 3 is an enlarged side view of the invention. Fig. 4: is a detail fragmentary View of the invention showing the coupling member in partially open position.
In forming a device embodying the invention the usual pump rod and wind mill rod is provided to which are connected the parts of the coupling.
The coupling comprises a pair of rigidly positioned bars connected with the wind mill rod and a pair of levers pivotally mounted on the said bars and designed to be moved thereover for receiving a locking sleeve surrounding the Wind mill rod coupling. The rigidly mounted bars and the pivotally mounted levers are formed with notches which receive lugs or bolts connected with the pump rod, so as to hold the pump rod properly connected with the Wind mill rod.
In order that the invention may be more clearly understood, an embodiment of the same is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which 1 indicates a pump of any desired kind provided with pump rod 2. A wind mill rod 3 is adapted to be connected with pump rod 2 for reciprocating the same and causing the pump 1 to act in the usual manner. Rigidly connected with the wind mill rod 3 are a pair of bars 4:. Bars 4 are bent out at 5 and back again at 6 for forming a bowed-out portion 7. Arranged in bowedout portion 7 are notches 8. The lower ends of the bars 4 have pivoted thereto a pair of levers 9 which are formed with notches 10. Notches 10 are arranged to register with notches 8 so that when the levers are in their folded or closed position, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the looking or binding sleeve may be slid thereover for locking the same in position, the levers and rigidly mounted bars accommodating the bolts 12. Of course, if desired, lugs or other projections could be used instead of bolts 12.
When it is desired to disconnect the rods 2 and 3, sleeve 11 is driven upwardly until the same is disengaged and then the levers 9 are moved downwardly to substantially the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3. When it is desired to couple or look the rods together the lowermost bolt 12 is placed in one of the sockets 10 of the levers 9 and then the levers forced over into the.
position shown in Fig. 3, which will cause both of the bolts 12 to occupy the notches or sockets 8 and 10. The sleeve 11 is then driven down over the upper ends of the levers 9, which will lock the levers in position. The sleeve 11 is preferably beveled so that when it is driven down it will clamp the levers properly in position and also by such clamping act-ion resist removal.
The coupling has been specifically described in connection with a pump rod and Windmill rod, but it will be evident that it may be used as a coupling for tent poles and for coupling any other device where two abutting poles are desired to be coupled together. Also it will be evident that the coupling device may be easily operated with rods arranged to extend at an angle to the horizontal or in a perfectly horizontal position, as well as a vertical position.
What I claim is 1. In a device of the character described,
the combination with a pump rod and a said rigid members for connecting the pump rod and the powerrod, 2. In a'device of the character described, the combination with a pump rod and a power rod, of a pair of bars connected with said power rod formed with a plurality of notches, a pairof arms pivotally mounted on said bars and formed with notches registering with said first mentioned notches, means projecting from said pump rod for engaging said bars and said arms in said notches and a locking member for locking said levers against movement.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination with a pump rod and a power rod, of bolts projecting from said pump rod, rigidly mounted bars extending from said power rod formed with notches for accommod'atingsaid bolts, a pair of arms pivotally mounted on the lower end 01 said barsand formed with notches registering with said first mentioned notches and accommodating said bolts, said arms being designed tolift' into position and hold in "position said bolts and a slidable sleeve fitting over the ends of said levers'o-pposite their pivotal point for locking the same against movement.
