Description

H. FUCHS.
Patented Jan. 4, 1910.
INVENTOE:
WITNESSES:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HEINRICH FUCHS, OF FRIEDRICHSFELDE, NEAR BERLIN, GERMANY.
ANCHOR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HEINRICH FUCHS, a subject of the German Emperor, and residing at Friedrichsfelde, near Berlin, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Anchors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to anchors and a primary object is to provide an improved anchor which can be taken to pieces, having pivoted arms, and arranged in such man ner that after the folded anchor has been placed in the ground, it is spread out when the shank is pulled. The arms are detachable from the shank, so that when the an chor is being removed from the ground the shank and the arms can be withdrawn separately, which facilitates the anchor being obtained again.
One constructional form of anchor according to my invention is represented by way of example in the accompanying drawing, in which: 4
Figure 1 is an elevation showing one form, and Fig. 2 is a detail.
Referring to the drawing the anchor consists substantially of the shank a provided with a head plate m, the ring a, four arms 6 carrying springs Z, and the chains h. The shank a is made of four angle-irons (Fig. 2) and is provided below with a point 6. Four pairs of cheeks e are riveted in the four angles of the shank near its bottom end, and in the space between each pair of cheeks is inserted one arm 6 provided at its end with a link (Z held there by a cotter or key f. Approximately in the center of the shank there are riveted four more pairs of cheeks g, into each pair of which the last link of a chain h is fixed by a key f. Each two upper and each two lower keys are connected by chains 2' in such manner that when pulled the four keys are detached in succession. To the points of the arms there are also attached chains or wire ropes 7c. Further, on each arm is riveted a spring Z which presses against the shank when the arm is raised.
The anchor is used as follows: It is at into the ground in known manner by boring Specification of Letters Patent.

a hole into which the folded anchor is placed. The springs press the arms outwardly, so that the outwardly bent points of the arms are pressed into the sides of the hole. Now when the shank is pulled, the points of the arms will engage in the ground. As the shank is continued to be pulled the arms will open until the chains h are stretched and prevent them opening farther. In this position the anchor offers its greatest resistance.
The anchor is not removed from the ground by digging it out, as is otherwise the case, but by detaching the arms from the shank. Namely in the form shown in the drawing, the eight keys f are withdrawn by pulling the chains 2', the shank is removed, and each arm is withdrawn separately by pulling the chains 70. The parts thus obtained again can be assembled, and the anchor can be used afresh.
Iclaim:
1. An anchor comprising in combination, a shank, a plurality of arms detachably and pivotally attached to the bottom portion thereof, and means detachably and movably connecting said arms to a higher portion of the shank, for the purpose specified.
2. In an anchor which can be dismembered, the combination, with a shank, of an arm pivotally attached and detachably keyed to the bottom portion thereof, a spring on said arm, and a chain attached near the point of said arm and detachably keyed to an upper portion of the shank.
3. In an anchor which can be dismembered, the combination, with a shank, of a bottom pair of cheeks on the shank, an upper pair of cheeks on the shank, an arm, a link on the end of said arm, a key holding said link between the bottom cheeks, a chain attached near the point of said arm, an upper key holding said chain between the upper cheeks, a chain attached between said keys, and another chain attached to the upper key.
