FUSE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE R. lVILLnT'r, a citizen of the United States of America,
residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Fuses, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to fuses, and my invention aims to provide :first, a cartridge fuse having provision for holding av soft metal fuse centrally of the cartridge. Sec- .ond, a'cartridge fuse with detachable caps for permitting of easy access being had to the interior of the cartridge for replacing a fuse. Third, a cartridge fuse that is simple in construction, durable and safe to use.
The invention further aims to accomplish the above results by a combination of related elements that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein there are illustrated the preferred embodiments of the invention, but it is to-be understood that the structural elements thereof aresusceptible to such changes as fall within the scope of the appended claims.

Figure 1 is a plan of the fuse partly broken away and partly in section, Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the fuse, Fig. 3 is a plan of the cartridge, Fig. 4c is a plan of a detached cap, Fig. 5 is an end view of the same, Figs. 6, 7 and 8 are side elevations of portions of fuses, showing various types of nuts associated with the detachable caps of the fuses, Fig. 9 is a longitudinal sectional view of a portion of a modified form of fuse, Fig. 10 is a perspective view of a portion of the cartridge of said fuse,
and Fig. 11 is a tached cap.
The reference numeral 1 denotes a cylindrical cartridge shell made of a non-conducting material, as fiber. The shell 1 at the ends thereof, is provided with open slots 2 and openings 3 diametrically disposed relatively to the closed ends of the slots 2.
The reference numeral 4 denotes transverse sleeves arranged in the ends of the cartridge shell and alinin with the openings 3 and the closed ends of the slots 2. These sleeves receive screws 5 having nuts 6.

The reference numeral 7 denotes metallic caps fitted upon the ends of the cart-ridge shell 1. The caps have the walls thereof provided with diametrically opposed open slots 8 and 9, the latter being of a greater length than the former. The end walls of the caps 7'a1e provided with openings 10 that are normally closed. by a disk of paper 11, preferably thin asbestos paper. The caps are fitted upon the ends of the cartridge shell with the slots 8 registering with the openings 3 to provide clearance for the screws 5 and the slots 9 registering with the slots 2 of the cartridge shell to provide clearance for the screws, also for a purpose that .will presently appear.
The reference numeral 12 denotes a soft metal fuse made of soft lead or other fusible material. This fuse is arranged lon itudinally of the cartridge shell and the enc 's are carried around the sleeves 4, upwardly through the slots 2 and 9 and under the nuts 6, said nuts being tightened upon the screws 5 to bind the ends of the fuse between the caps and said nuts, besides locking the caps upon the ends of the cartridge fuse.
Fig. 6 shows a knurled nut 13 in lieu of the nut 6.
. Fig. 7 shows a winged thumb nut 14 in lieu of the nuts 6 and 13.
Fig. 8 shows one of the caps 7 as provided with a blade 15, whereby it can be used in a knife switch.
' In Figs. 9 to 11 inclusive, there is illus-, trated a modification of the invention, wherein the ends of the cartridge shell 16 are provided with longitudinal grooves 17 and diametrically opposed pins 18. The caps 19 fitted upon the ends of the cartridge shell 16 are provided with oppositely disposed L-shaped slots 20 to receive the pins 18, whereby the caps 19 can be locked upon.

A cartridge fuse comprising a non fusible shell having the ends thereof slotted caps detachably mounted upon the ends of said shell and having slots registering with the slots of said shell, screws arranged transversely of the ends of said shell and extending through and the slots of said caps,'a fuse arranged longitudinally of said shell and having the ends thereof extending through said slots and around said screws, and means carried by said screws for anchoring the ends of said fuse upon said caps. 5

A cartridge fuse comprising a nonfusible shell having the ends thereof provided with slots, caps detachably mounted upon the ends of said shell and having slots communicating with the slots of said shell, transverse screws arranged in the ends of said shell and extending through the slots of said shell and said caps, a fuse arranged the slots of said shell within said shell and having the ends thereof extending through said slots and engagmg said screws, nuts screwed upon sai screws for retaining the ends of said fuse in engagement with the outer sides of said caps, and means surrounding said crews within said shell for bracing the wa ls of said shell during the screwing action of said nuts.

5; A cartridge fuse comprising a shell having the ends thereofslotted, screws arranged transversely of said shell and extending through the slots of said shell, and a fuse located longitudinally of said shell and having the ends thereof extending through the slots of said shell and held in engagement with one end of 'each screw.
