Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it mag concern Be it known that I, HENRY J. MITCHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Farm-Gates, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a farm gatewhich shall be cheap of manufacture, simple in construction and efiicient in use.

The main features of my invention are as follows, to wit :First :When it is pushed longitudinally to be opened, it is automatically elevated off the ground. Second When approximately, its center has been reached in opening, it can be swung to assume a position at right angles to its closed or normal position on a swinging hinge. Third :It is constructed in such a manner that when open, it will be balanced and hang in perfect equilibrium. Fourth :It can be locked when closed both against opening and upward shifting or movement. Fifth :-It is provided with an auxiliary gate, which can be opened and closed readily and locked in any open or closed position as desired. Its other features and advantages will readily become apparent from the following specification and claims.

In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.Figure 1 is a view in elevation of my gate in position, looking at it from one side, say the rear side. Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of my gate in position looking at it from the other side, say the front side. Fig. 3 is a view ofmy gate in elevation looking toward it in an open position, and Fig. 4 is a plan view (detached) of the swinging hinge and elevating roller.

The gate is supported between two gate supporting posts or standards l2.

The gate is made up of a series of bars, slats or boards 3 arranged one above the other, some extending across theentire width of the gate and others approximately half way; they may however be arranged in any manner and form. These slats are supported and held together by cross pieces or strips 4 attached at each side of the slats 3 at both ends and near its center. I may use as many of these cross strips 4 as I desire. Midway, between the cross strips 4 and extending up from the bottom of the gate half its height, I provide short cross pieces 5. These cross pieces strengthen the gate and keep it in alinement. as desired. One of the slats 3 is peculiarly formed, having an inclined or tapered bottom edge 6. On the inner end of this slat 3 with the, inclined bottom edge'6, I place a guide or look block 7 On the gate supporting post 2, I attach in any sultable manner, preferably by bolt and nut connection, a bracket or strap hinge composed of leaves 8 having eyes 9 to which the loop or strap 10 is loosely attached by means of pins 12. This loop or strap 10 at its lower end carries a roller or wheel 14 mounted loosely on a pin 15. This bracket or strap hinge just described swings in and out on the post 2, and the peculiar shaped slat 3 with the inclined edge 6worksthrough the slot or space 16 in said bracket hinge. When the gate is shoved forward or backward and when closed the lock block? fits in said slot or space 16, looking and supporting the gate at said end.

On the post 1, I attach a finger or curved pin 17 which passes between the cross pieces 4 at that end of the gate adjacent to said post 1 and prevents any lateral play of the gate, a hook 18 (see Fig. 1) can'be dropped forward over one of the slats 3 and locks thej gate against any upward or other movement:

When it is desired to open the gate, the operator unhooks the hook 18, then pushes the gate longitudinally in direction of arrow, this forces the inclined edge 6 to travel over the roller 15 and as the inclined edge 6 passes over said roller 15, it elevates the gate ofi'the ground on account of the increasing degree of inclination on edge '6,*so that when the center cross piece 4: is reached, the entire gate is elevated and hangs in suspension on the bracket hinge; the gate is then swung around, still held by the loop 10 of the bracket hinge, said loop 10 turning around with the gate on the hinges or leaves 8, until the gate stands at right angles to its former normal or closed posit-ion, the center cross pieces 4 (see especially Fig. 3 when the gate is open) being on one side of the post, as they are purposelyplaced out of the middle line of the gate so as to balance it when open as shown. The gate is opened only half way and then swung open. To close the gate it is swung back and slid in place until the lock block 7 is in loop 10 self.

and the pin 17 between cross end pieces 4 and the hook 18 passes over one of the slats and then the gate is locked against any displacement.

I will now describe the auxiliary gate. This auxiliary gate is formed of two slats 21 connected at the ends by end pieces 22. This: auxiliary gate is supported and slides between the cross pieces 1 and 5 at that end of the gate where it is situated. A lever 23 fulcrumed at 24 to slat 3 and at 25 to lower slat 21 of the auxiliary gate is the means whereby the auxiliary gate is moved in and out of position. Moving the lever 23 forward and backward moves the auxiliary gate forward and backward or in other words opens and shuts it. A chain 26 carrying at its end a pin 27 is attached to the lever 23. In one of the slats 3, I provide holes 28 and I provide holes as 29 in lever 23. When the auxiliary gate is opened and it is desired to lock itat a definite point the pin 27 is placed in the holes 29 in lever 23 and in hole 28 in slat 3 and thus the gate is held againstinward. or outward movement. Holes as 30 (see Fig. 1) may also be placed in the auxiliary gate slat 21 so that the fulcrumed point 25 of the lever 23 can be varied if desired.

This gate is especially desirable between the fields or subdivisions of a farm, but can be used as an entrance gate to the farm it- It can be readily operated, works easily and smoothly, does not get out of order or alinement under even extraordinary circumstances and can be hung in place by any one; no skill being required.

The auxiliary gate can be opened and small stock or fowl driven through it, the

other stock being held in checkby the large gate.

The gate may be made of wood or iron, wood being preferred.

Any of the parts which wear may be made of heavier material and reinforced if desired.

I do not wish to confine myself to the specific construction shown and described, but may deviate from such construction and arrangement of parts.

WVhat I claim as new and of my invention and'desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a gate of the character described, a a post, a bracket hinge fitted to said post and adapted to swing thereon, said bracket hinge composedof a hinge, a loop, and a roller combined together, a gate, saidgate supported bysaid bracket hinge, and adapted to slide and swing, one of the slats which compose the body of the gate provided with a horizontally inclined lower edge, whereby by sliding the gate longitudinally, by reason of the inclined edge of the slat passing over the said roller, it at the same time receives a rising movement and a lock block attached to said gate, which enters the bracket hinge when the gate is closed, to lock said gate, as set forth.

2. In a gate of the character described, a post, a bracket hinge fitted to said post, and adapted to swing thereon, said bracket hinge composed of a hinge which is connected to the post, a loop, which carries at its lower end a wheel, said wheel revolving in said loop, the loop and wheel swingin on said hinge, a gate, said gate supported by said bracket hinge and adapted to slide and to swing, one of the slats which compose the body of the gate provided with a horizontally inclined lower edge, whereby, by sliding the gate longitudinally, by reason of the inclined edge of the slat passing over the said wheel, it at the same time,

receives a rising movement, and a lock block attached to said gatewhich enters the bracket hinge when the gate is closed to lock the gate, as set forth.
