Description

PETER HsYHjES, 0F BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
Lettc'rs Patent No. `102,855, dated May 10, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT 1N FUNNELS.
I'heSohec'iule referre to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
1, PETER H. Ninos, of the city of Boston, in the l county of Sui'olk` and State of Massachusetts, have vinvented certain Improvements in Tunnels, of' which thefollowing is a specification.
My invention relates to the combination of a tunnel, (constructed in the usual yform,) a bent lever, hollow connecting-rod, and valve, for the purpose of opening and closing the orifice at the end of the tun-I nel, and allowing the air toeseape. f
The object of ny invention is to facilitate the filling of vessels, and prevent any undue waste.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tunnel Yembodying my invent-ion, and showing the orice open.
Figure 2 is a vertical section ot' the same, showing the orifice closed.
A is the cone, and
B the tube forming a tunnel.
C is a level', one end of which is bent so as to forni a handle. This lever is attached to 'the rim of the tunnel. The opposite end of the lever is attached to a hol y low connecting-rod, D, which passes through the center of the tunnel vertically, and is provided with a valve, E,'which-coincides with the orifice at the end of the tunnel. The hollow connecting-rod forms an air-passage for the escape of air.
-pose of forming an air-tight joint between the tube and vessel.
The act of lifting the tunnel by the handle raises the opposite end 0f the lever, connecting-rod, and valve, closing the; orifice, and lretaining the `surplus liquid. Releasing the handle allows that end of the lever to which are attached the connecting-rod and valve to fall, thereby opening the orifice, and allowing the liquid 'to escape,
Claim'.
A lever, one end of which is bent so as to form a handle, and is attached to the rim of a tunnel, in combination with a hollow connecting-rod and valve,
and so arranged that the act of lifting the tunnel verticallyby the handle causes the lvalve to rise, and by releas'rn f the handle allowsft-he vali-"e` tio fall, as sub.- v`sta:ntfiall Y descripegdd.
