COMBINATION MANURE-SPREADER HITCH.
Application filed October 2, 1911.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CARL C. SCHULTZ, a
citizen of the United States, residing at two-horse or three-horse evener and in which the change may be quickly and easily accomplished.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved hitching bracket or device in which a horse evener and draft pole may be changed without employing a wrench, hammer or other tools and in which it will be simply necessary to remove the hammer strap pin whereby the evener may be changed for the required number of horses and the pole shifted in accordance with the evener used. 1
With these and other-objects in view, the invention consists of certain other combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, it being a still further object of the invention to provide a device which will not be likely to get out of working order.
In the drawings:-Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved hitch in use with a two-horse evener. Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the device. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the device in use as a three-horse evener. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one of the supporting brackets employed with the device. Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken on the line 66 of Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawings in detail, there is shown a stub tongue or pole 10 which at its rear end is provided with an opening 11 adapted for receiving a king bolt for securing the same to a spreader or other vehicle and said stub tongue has secured thereto adjacent to its forward end and slightly forwardly of its rear end, brackets 12 and 13 respectively. These brackets each comprise a single section of metal having one end Specification of Letters Patent.

secured in a transverse recess lat in the upper face of the stub tongue and extending outwardly at right angles thereto while its remaining portion is bent inwardly in spaced parallel relation thereto and secured in a similar recess in the under face of the stub pole by a common securing means 15 while the free extremity of the metal is bent to form a rectangular socket 16 and is welded to the lower parallel portion of the bracket adjacent to the stub tongue.
As aforesaid, each of the brackets 12 and 13 are similarly constructed and are secured in parallel relation to each other by means of braces 17 and 18 which cross each other centrally and are connected as shown at 19. The ends of the brace 17 are secured to the connecting means 15 for the inner end of the rear bracket 13 and to a securing member 20 connecting the parallel portions of the front bracket 12 spaced from the outer end thereof and provided with an interposed block 21 in the form of a sleeve as shown and between which and the end of the bracket a draft tongue 22 is adapted to be disposed when the device is employed as a three-horse evener.
The forward end of the brace 18 is provided with an enlarged plate 23 which is secured to the stub tongue by the securing means heretofore described and said plate is provided with an aperture therethrough registering with openings through the stub tongue and a hammer strap 24 secured to the upper face of the stub tongue for receiving a pin 25 for securing a double-tree 26 in position and permitting the plate 23 to serve as a bearing plate for the doubletree. The rear end of the brace 18 is secured in positionby a similar means with which the forward end of the brace 17 is secured and by a similar interposed block while the extremity of said brace 18 projects rearwardly beyond the bracket 13 and is provided with an aperture 27 for receiving the shank of an inverted U-shaped pin 28 which carries a coiled spring 29 between its enlarged extremity and the apertured portion of the brace 18 so as to exert downward pressure thereon and hold the opposite leg of the pin in engagement with registering openings 30 in the horizontal portions of the bracket 13 between the block and the outer end of the bracket so that the same may be engaged through an opening 31 adjacent the rear end of the tongue 22 for securing the same to the brackets laterally spaced from and parallel to the stub tongue.
When the device is in this position, a three-horse evener 32 is adapted to be secured in position by the pin 25 so that two of the draft animals will be disposed upon opposite sides ofthe tongue 22 and one beyond the stub tongue 10 on the side-opposite to the position of the tongue 22 to counterbalance the pull, all of which is directly from the center at all times and it will be further seen that when the device is in this position for use in connection with a two-horse evener that the pin 25 projects through an opening 33 in the tongue 22 forwardly of the opening 31 and rearwardly of the forward bracket and loop formed therein while the rear bracket serves to retain the tongue in a rigid position. Braces 34 are connected to the stub tongue upon opposite sides thereof and adjacent to its forward end by a common connecting member 35 while the rear ends of the braces are connected to the vehicle to which the hitch is secured so as to rigidly secure the stub tongue in position.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawings it will be seen that I have provided a very efficient hitching device for use in connection with two-horse eveners or three-horse eveners which will greatly facilitate the the center or stub tongue that there will be no side draft and the draft animals or horses are thus greatly benefited and will work with even pull.
'1 claim In an evener hitch, a stub tongue, brackets secured thereto in spaced parallel relation and projecting therefrom, 'each of said brackets comprising a single section of metal bent upon itself to provide top and bottom portions in spaced parallel relation and secured at its extremities to the stub tongue, the ends of the metal beneath the tongue being bent to form loops, braces connecting the brackets from diagonally opposite points, the securing means for the outer ends of the braces passing through the brackets and forming loops with the ends thereof, a spring operated pin carried by the rear extremity of one brace engaged through apertures in the loop portion of the rear bracket adapted for securing a draft pole in, the loops of the brackets'and draft attaching means for eveners mounted upon the stub tongue for securing said draft tongue in the loops beneath the stub tongue at times.
