UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIE WILLIAM K. HENRY, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR .TO THE AMERICAN HARDWARE CORPORATION, OIE NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
DOOR-CHECK STOP.
Application filed June 26, 1911.
To all whom it may concern: 7 I
Be it known that I, WILLIAM K. HENRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Britain, county of Hartford, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Check Stops, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvementsin double-swing door closers, and the object of the invention is to provide in such a device an effective means whereby a door so equipped may he held open at certain posi tions in either direction.
The particular improvements herein described relate particularly to a door closing or door checking device such as set forth in my former Patent, No. 970,445, dated September 13th, 1910. In the drawings, the stop mechanism is shown in connection with such a device. So far as details of construction, in common to the aforesaid patented construction and the present case, are concerned, no more than a general description will be required herein.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an edge elevation of the upper part of a door mounted in a door frame and equipped with a door closer of the double-swing type. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the main body of a door closer, detached, and on a relatively enlarged scale. Fig. 8 is a front elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a plan view of one end of a lever arm. Fig. 5 is, in the main, a central longitudinal section of the lever shown in Fig. 4.
1 represents a door, in this instance mounted on a double-swing hinge 2.
3 is a door frame.
4 is a lever arm, the outer end of which is connected by a link 5 to the door frame 3. The inner end of the lever arm 4 is mounted upon a spindle 6, which has bearings in the casing 7, which latter preferably contains therein a suitable closer spring and check. The casing 7 is mounted on the door. The lever arm 4 is provided at its inner end with a hexagonal hole 8, the upper end of the spindle 6 being correspondingly shaped, whereby the arm 4 may be properly varied in its position to adapt the closing device to either a right or left hand door. It is immaterial what sort of spring or check is employed to control the spindle 6.
9 is a spring-pressed latch or detent, in

this instance pressed by a flat spring 10, carried by the lever arm.
11 is a clamping screw for controlling the hub of the arm 4.
12-12 are stop shoulders carried by an arc-shaped frame 13, having a slot therein.
14 is a set-screw taking into the bracket portion 15 of the casing 7. This bracket portion is provided wit-h a curved channel or guide-way in which the arc-shaped frame 13 is adjustable so that the two stop shoulders 12-12 may be adjusted to the right or left (as viewed in Fig. 2) to any desired degree, said frame being held in adjusted position by the clamping screw 14.
In the case of a double-swing door, it is desirable to be able to hold the door fully open at the end of either swinging movement, consequently, I have provided the adjustable stop shoulders 12-12, the same being preferably spaced so that they will bear proper relation respectively to the springpressed detent 9 to catch and engage the same whenever the door is, relatively to the particular passage which it controls, fully open, for, in such event, the detent 9 will rest back of one or the other of the stop shoulders 1212, as the case may be. The are of the frame 13 should be such that it corresponds substantially to the arc of movement of the detent 9, whereby the stop shoulders on the frame 13 will always assume the frame, a guide-way in the spindle supporting casing for said stop carrying frame, said stop supporting frame having a slot and a set-screw passing through said slot into said spindle supporting casing.
2. In an apparatus of the character described, a double acting door controlling mechanism including a swinging lever arm, a spindle, a casing for supporting said spindle, a connection for said lever arm whereby the latter may be connected to a means to secure said frame thereon at vadoor frame, stop mechanism comprising two rious positions of adjustment. adjustable stop shoulders carried by the WILLIAM K. HENRY. splndle supportlng casing said stop shoulders being connected With each other, said Witnesses:
