- To ail whom it may concern.-
lie it known that 1, WILLIAM lVALMsLnr, a citizen of the United States, and resident oi; Lowell, county of Middlesex, State of lviz'issachusetts, have invented an Improve ment in Bobbin-Strippers, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is specification, like characters on-the drawing representing like i I nvention has for its object the proof a simple and efficient device for stripping the waste yarn from the fillingcarriers or bobbins used in the shuttle. of a loom, and it is more particularly adapted for use in connection with looms wherein the filling in the working shuttle isreplenished automatically. In such looms, and particularly when the replenishment is effected prior to complete exhaustion of the filling in the shuttle, a small portion of yarn remains on the spent bobbin when it, is ejected from the shuttle. Before the bobbins can be used over again this waste yarn must be removed, either by knocking or cutting it '05 by hand, or by some mechanical device.
Heretofore it has been proposed to strip the ejected bobbin as it is discharged from the shuttle, a rotating stripper being arranged to catch the fillingend as the bobbin drops and to wind the waste yarn upon the stripper as it is drawn from the bobbin. This arra cement, while its operation is.in general s siactory, requires each loom to be ccv iped with the stripping mechanism. 1" is customary for one weaver to attend to a group of sixteen 01? more automatic filling tit) replenishing looms, and the equipment of every loom with a stripping device increases the cost to the mill.
My present invention comprehends a stripping de ice which in practice will be applied to onlyone loom of group, and comprises essentially a rotating; stripper mounted on. the loom and driven by a moving member thereof, and a holder mounted on the loom adjacent the stripper and adapted to receive and hold temporarily a spent bobbin, with the tip of the latter directed toward the stripper. In practice the holder is made as a series of frictionally acting members each of whichis adapted to receive a bobbin. The weaver attending a group of looms takes the spent bobbins from the cans of the various looms and places them on the holders of the loom equipped with the stripper. .'lhc loose ends of yarn from such bobbins are caught by the stripper and wound thereupon as the yarn is drawn oil from the bobbin, 0r bobbins, over the tip end thereof. The stripped bobbins are then removed and placed in a suitable receptacle, ready for further use. As the weaver has to pay noattcntiou to the device. other than to apply and remove bobbins from the holder, hecan attend to his other duties as required and at odd moments collects and positions the bobbins to be stripped, and removes the stripped ones. Thus no additional cost for stripping is incurred beyond the equipping of a single loom of each group looked after by a weaver.

Referring to Fig. 1 the loom frame A, its arch B. the crank-shaft C and the handwheel D thereon, are and may be all of usual and wvell known construction, and the filling replenishing mechanism comprising essentially tlie'battery E and transferrer F are of the type shown in United States patent to Northrop No. 529,940, dated llovembcr 27, 1894.
In accordance with my present invention I apply to, the end of thocrank-shaft, at the replenishing side of the loom, a stripper, herein shown as a drum comprising circular ends or heads 1 and connecting strips or bars 2 made of Wood or other suitable material, the stripper being attached in any suitable manner to the crank-shaft C adjacent the handwheel.
In the preferred form of my invention, as herein illustrated, I mount a l'robbin hold 'ing device above and adjacent the stripper, and for that purpose an L-shaped bracket 3 from it.

The spent bobbins when discharged from the shuttles of the various looms of a group fall into cans or other receptacles provided for the purpose, and ordinarily contain a small amount of waste yarn. The weaver will from time to time remove these bobbins from a can and place them upon the holders 4. as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, each bobbin 5 being held upon its holder with its tip depending and above the stripper. ln this position the end of filling 6 hanging down from the waste-yarn 7 on the bobbin will be caught by the rotating stripperand wound thereupon, and as the yarn is wound upon the stripper it is drawn otf from the bobbin over the depending tip thereof. It the loose ends-are short it will be necessary for the weaver to draw ofl" enough yarn from a bobbin to allow the loose end to be caught by the stripper. By means of the device herein described no additionalcost is incurred for stripping other than the slightcost necessary to equip one loom in each group of looms. The particular construction of the stripper is not material, nor is the particular construction of the bobbin-holding device restricted to that herein shown, for so far as the stripper is concerned any structure may be used which will properly perform the required function and the holder can be of any form which will conveniently-hold a bobbin tem- ,porarily and in position for stripping.

In a loom having filling replenishing mechanism at one side of its frame, in combination, a crank-shaft extended beyond the frame at the replenishing side thereof, a drum-like yarn-stripper mounted on such extension, at bracltet 011 the frame-adjacent said stripper, and a plurality of split spindles fixedly mounted on and depending from the bracket and pointing toward the stripper, each spindle being adapted to re ceive and hold temporarily a bobbin with its tip directed toward the stripper, whereby the latter may draw oif and wind upon itself the waste yarn from a; bobbin held upon a spindle;
