Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WINFIELD S. GIL- MORE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacles for Garments, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to receptacles for garments, either permanently fixed or transportable, and provided with means for conveniently carrying and displaying garments and of special utility as a traveling case or trunk for salesmen.

The invention has particular reference to convenient, reliable and economical means whereby garments carried in the receptacle may be displayed with ready access thereto when the cover is in open position, and when the cover is closed, said means may be folded or adjusted "within the receptacle out of the way.

The invention consists of the features hereinafter pointed out.

In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, and in which like reference numerals designate corresponding parts in the several figures, the invention is shown in its preferred embodiment.

Figure 1 is a front elevation of the receptacle, its hinged cover being in open position and in vertical section. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation on the line IIII of Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view on the line IIIIII of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2, partly broken away and showing the extension piece and associated parts in folded position. Fig. 5 shows a detail.

Referring now to the specific construction as shown in the drawings, 1 is the body portion and 2 the cover portion of the re ceptacle hinged together along a vertical edge. Supported by convenient means within the body portion and projecting outwardly from the rear thereof is a hanger rack 3 adapted to support garment hangers 4. In the preferred arrangement the rack comprises a rod having its inner end provided with a supporting plate 5 fixed to the rear wall of the body portion, said'rod being also supported along its length by a plurality of supporting hooks 6 secured to the top wall of the body portion and connecting with the lower side of the hanger rack 3 to leave the upper side of this rack unobstructed for the free sliding' movement of the hangers 4.

7 is an extension piece for the hanger rack 3 designed and arranged to be supported in alinement with the rack 3, when the cover portion is in open position.

8 is an arm projecting from the cover portion 2 and arranged to hold the extension piece 7 in alinement with the rack 3. This arm 8 is preferably pivotally supported at its inner end so as to swing in a horizontal plane and against the cover portion, as shown in Fig. 4, when the cover portion is about to be closed.

In the preferred arrangement of the extension piece 7 it is hinged at its inner end to the outer end of the rack 3, although other forms of folding or collapsible connection, or none at all, may be used. And in the preferred arrangement of the arm 8 it is provided with a crotch 9 at its outer end to receive and support the piece 7. It is also preferred, in pivotally supporting or hinging the arm 8 to the cover portion, to employ a vertical rod 10 fixed at its upper end to the upper wall of the cover portion and supported at its lower end by a bracket .11, the arm 8 having an eye piece 12 through which the rod 10 loosely passes and supported by a collar 13 fixed on the rod 10.

14 is a supporting leg extending upward at an angle from the cover portion and into supporting connection with the extension piece 7. In the preferred arrangement this leg is permanently secured at its upper end to the crotch 9, and is hinged at its lower end to the cover portion so as to swing inward and outward with relation thereto, and so that it may fold against the cover portion. To this end the lower end of the leg 14 is fixed to an eye piece 15 loosely surrounding the rod 10. Thus, the arm 8 and legv 14 may swing together laterally to and from the cover portion and out of and into supporting position for the extension piece 7.

l/Vhen the piece 7 is hinged, as shown, to the rack 3, sufiicient play is provided at the hinge or elsewhere for the ehsy engagement and disengagement of the crotch 9 with the piece 7.

I11 operation, when the receptacle is closed the hangers are supported on the rack 3, and the arm 8 and leg 14 are folded against the cover portion, the piece 7 hanging down from rack 3 against the garments, all as shown in Fig. 4. WVhen the cover portion has moved into open position the extension piece 7 is then elevated to aline with the rack 3, and the arm 8 and leg 14 are swung outward into supporting engagement with the piece 7 thereby bringing the parts into the position shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. The hangers with their garments may be then slid outward from rack 3 onto extension piece 7 convenient for display or removal.

Various changes may be made from the specific and preferred embodiment of the invention, as shown in the drawings, without departing from the scope of the inven tion.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a garment receptacle, the combination of a body portion; a cover portion hinged to the body portion along a vertical edge; a hanger rack secured to the body portion and projecting outwardly from the rear thereof; an extension piece for the hanger rack; an arm projecting from the cover portion and arranged to hold said extension piece in alinement with the hanger rack when the cover portion is in open position, said arm being hinged at its inner end so as to swing in a horizontal plane; a supporting leg extending upward at an angle from the cover portion and into supporting engagement with said extension piece, said leg having a hinged connection at its lower end with the cover portion so as to swing inward and outward with relation thereto.

In a garment receptacle, the combination of a body portion; a cover portion hinged to the body portion along a vertical edge; a hanger rack secured to the body portion and projecting outwardly from the rear thereof; an extension piece for the hanger rack; an arm projecting from the cover portion and arranged to hold said extension piece in alinement with the hanger rack when the cover por tion is in open position, said arm being hinged at its inner end so as to swing in a horizontal plane; a supporting leg extending upward at an angle from the cover portion and into supporting engagement with said extension piece, said leg having a hinged connection at its lower end with the cover portion so as to swmg inward and outward with relation thereto, said arms and leg being permanently connected together at their outer ends.

In a garment receptacle, the combination of a body portion; a cover portion hinged to the body portion along a vertical edge; a hanger rack secured to the body portion and projecting outwardly from the rear thereof; an extension piece for the hanger rack; avertical rod secured to the cover portion; an arm projecting from the cover portion and arranged to hold said extension piece in alinement with the hanger rack when the cover portion is in open position, said arm being hinged at its inner end on said vertical rod so as to swing in a horizontal plane; a supporting leg extending upward at an angle from the cover portion and into supporting engagement with said extension piece, said leg having a hinged connection at its lower end with said vertical rod so as to swing inward and outward with relation to said cover portion.

In a garment receptacle, the combination of a body portion; a cover portion hinged to the body portion along a vertical edge; a hanger rack secured to the body portion and projecting outwardly from the rear thereof; an extension piece hinged at its inner end to the outer end of the hanger rack; a vertical rod secured to the cover portion; an arm projecting from the cover portion and arranged to hold said extension piece in alinement with the hanger rack when the cover portion is in open position, said arm being hinged at its inner end on said vertical rod so as to swing in a horizontal plane; a supporting leg extending upward at an angle from the cover portion and into supporting engagement with said extension piece, said leg having a hinged connection at its lower end with said vertical rod so as to swing inward and outward with relation to said cover portion, said arm and leg being permanently connected together at their outer ends.
