INDIVIDUAL CONCRETE SIGN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 28,1912.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEO G. HAASE, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Pasadena, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Individual Concrete Signs, of which'the following is a specification.
My invention consists in an improved individual reinforced concrete sign having three layers of cement, a metallic reinforce located between the back and intermediate layers, and a fastener-sleeve extending through the three layers and having a col lar bearing against the metallic reinforce, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In order that my invention may be fully understood I will proceed to describe itwith reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure l is a perspective view of my improved individual reinforced concrete sign. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section there of taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, suitable fasteners, such as screws, being shown in dotted lines.
My sign comprises a body or slab molded in three layers. 1 is the front or sign layer of my sign formed of a rich layer of fine cement having a depressed or sunken field providing a recess 4, a raised border 1 and suitable lettering such as a raised character 2, in the recess. 3 is the back layer of cement of any desired thickness. On this back layer a metallic reinforce 5 is spread which reinforce may consist of wire netting or expanded metal. 6 is an intermediate layer of cement laid on the back layer and embedding the reinforce 5 and on which the front or sign layer 1 is laid. The back and intermediate layers 3 and 6 respectively may be of different degrees of coarseness, the back layer 3 being the coarser if desired. 12 are sleeves which may be formed from short hollow pieces of metal tubing. These sleeves 12 extend through the three layers and have collars or flanges 13 formed there on for engaging with or bearing against one side or the other of the reinforce. Fasteners, such as screws 14, shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, can be inserted through the sleeves 13 for securing the sign in position.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for The outer or front face 4 of the sign layer 1 being recessed, the fastener heads do not project beyond the lettering 2 or raised border 1 and the sleeves 12 extending from the bottom of the recess t to the back or rear face of the back layer 3 are thereby adapted to prevent the heads of the fasteners 14 being forced down against the body of the sign with sufficient pressure to crack or break the same. The collars or flanges 13 by engaging with or bearing against the reinforcing material will also assist in preventing the breaking or damaging of the sign. The reinforcing material is preferably of less area than the body of the sign so that its edges will not come out even or flush with the edges of the sign but will permit of the edges of the sign being formed from fine material as a thickness of cement which will form a smooth surface entirely around the edges of the sign.
By constructing a sign as above described it is evident that a very neat and attractive Sign can be inexpensively and quickly formed and one which will possess the requisite strength and durability to permit of its being handled and secured in position in the ordinary manner without undue care and attention. As it is indestructible from the action of the elements it can be placed in exposed places without any protection and after having been so placed will require no further care or attention.
Having thus described my invention the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
An individual reinforced concrete sign having letters on one face comprising a body of cement having a metallic reinforce embedded therein and a fastener-sleeve extending entirely through the sign and having a collar bearing against the metallic reinforce.
