To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, LUIGI VIEZZI, a'subject of the King of Italy, and a residentof Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Vise, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to vises, and has for its object to provide one having a jaw with an arm disposed in a guideway, the arm ex-y tending through an opening in a lever fulcrumed to a beam which is held yieldingly in one direction by a spring, the lever normally gripping the arm, and means being provided for operating the lever, to permit the arm on the jaw to move freely through the opening in the lever and to move the beam and with it the lever, arm and jaw, so also that when freed the spring may throw the beam back and with it the lever, arm and jaw, to obtain a firm grip.
Other objects of the invention will appear in the following specication, in which the preferred form of my invention is described.

By referring to the drawings it will be speen that` a frame 5 -is provided, having a guideway 6 in which is disposed a hollow arm 7 Vsecured to a jaw 8. A companion jaw 9 is provided and is preferably integral with the guideway 6. Disposed ,in the hollow arm 7- and extending into the guideway 6.

A nut 13 is pro-A vided for meshing with the threaded terminal of the rod .11, to abut against the a plurality of spring members 17, these spring members 17 resting on the flanges 18 of a bracket 19, with their terminals 2O pressing against the said bracket. Through the beam 15 there is a -vertical opening 21, in which is disposed a lever 22, this lever 22 being alsodisposed through an opening 24 in the frame 5 and having an opening 23 through which extends the hollow arm 7. A leaf spring 25 is secured to the beam 15 and presses against the lever 22 above the beam 15, to hold it normally obliquely and in engagement with the top of the hollow arm 7. A shaft 26, journaled in bearings in flanges 27 is provided, said flanges 27 being yintegral with the guideway 14, and mounted to rock on the said shaft 26 there are two bell crank levers 28 and 29. The bell crank lever 28 is connected by a link 30 with the lower terminal of the lever 22, and the bell crank lever 29 is connected by a link 31 with the beam 15.` Links 32 having stirrups 33 are articulated to and 29 by which the Ylevers may be readily operated by the foot of the mechanic.
In using the invention, the lever 28 is operated by its stirrup 33 which, by means of the link 30, draws the lower terminal of the lever 22 forward, so that the upper terminal of the lever 22 will be moved rearward and in position to permit the arm 7 to move freely in the guideway. After this has been done, it will be found that the spring .10 will force the hollow arm 7 and the jaw 8 outward, so that a member nay be readily inserted between the jaws 8 and 9. When this has been done the jaw 8 is pushed in- \ward, and at the same time the lever29 is operated by itsLIstirrup 33. When the jaw `8 has been pushed inward and the member is held snugly between the jaws 8 and 9, the lever 29 is freed, so that the beam 15 will be moved rearward byl means of the springs sol 17, to hold the member firmly between `t-he jaws. Y
It will be seen that the upper terminal of the lever 22 is bent forward, and when the' parts are in normal position the spring 25 will pressthe upper terminal of the lever forward, so that the hollow arm 7 will be gripped by the lever 22 at the upper portion of its opening y23, but when the bell crank lever 28 is operated by means of the stirrup y33, the upper terminal of the lever 22 will be `moved rearward, so that the-arm 7 may be moved freely therein.
In the modified form of the invention l shownin Figs. 5, 6 and 7 of the drawings, Ithe beam 34 is disposed for traveling in the guideway 35 and is held yieldingly in one direction by means of the springs 36, which 'correspond in all particulars with vthe springs 17 shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings,

When the link 56 is moved downward by eans-of the stirrup 57 it operates the Vbell c ank lever 54 which, by means of the link 55, operates the right-hand terminal of the 'lever 52 through the opening 51 in which the arm 50 is disposed. When the said 'right-hand terminal of the lever 52 is operated, the lever 52 is disposed at right angles to the arm 50, and the saidarm 50 may be moved freely in the said opening 51, to permit of the movement of the jaw 51a to or from the frame 39,- as may be desired. Vhen the jaw 51a has been moved inthe direction of the frame 39 to the desired position, the link 56 is released and the right terminal of the lever-52 moves back to its former position, so that the said lever 52 will be disposed obliquely relatively to the arm 50, to grip the arm 50 at the sides of the opening 51,. It will also be seen that by moving the link 47 downward, the arm 50v terminal of the link 53 to the 4right and will draw toward the beam 34 the left terminal of the lever 52, and as this will move the lever 52 so that it will be at right angles to uthe arm 50, the' said arm 50 may be moved freely in the opening 51 in the said lever'52,

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1.
