lhisinvention relates to -a new and usefulimprovenient in strops for sharpening razors, whereby the operation of giving the razor a goodedge is much moi'e speedily aiul perfectly performed than it has hitherto been; and

It consists in the use of cork beneath the outer or leather covering of the strop, and incovering thev sides lwith an outside coating or a separate composition for each, as hereinafter more fully described.

This razor-strop is made with a central stock or core of wood, A, of which the handle Bis formed.

One side, C, of the strop is a hone, formed cfa compound with which that side ot' the strop is covered, thc composition being a mixture of carbon or soot in a tinely-powdered state, tine bone-dust, glue,

' and flour-paste, placed on the wood.

'.lhe proportions of this mixture are about as follows:

Glue, two and a half pounds, to flour two pounds, boiled in half a gallon of water, and then mixed with pulyeriz'ed bone till'a suitable consistency is obtained.

The strips of cork on t-hese sides are wider than thewood, and are puckered to give them a slight coucavity underneath and make them coincide with the wood.

By making the sides of the strop (except the hone side) elastic, by means of cork, a mostdurable surface is secured, one which always retains a uniform' degree of elasticity, and preserves a smooth, eren surface for the razor. Y

I do not broadly claim a flexible substance beneath the leather, as I am aware that such substances have been used; but I am not aware that any substance possessing the required degree of softness and elasticity, and which would insure a smooth and even surface until the'strop should be worn ont, has hitlierto been used.

Being a manufacturer of raz'or-sti'ops, I have discovered, after many experiments, that cork is the proper article to be used for this purpose.

The method of using the sides ofthe strop, after honing, is in the order of E, F, and G.

Having thus described my invention,

I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. 'A four-sided razor-strop, having each side provided, respectively, with the compositions named, and in the proportions specified, to form successive surfaces on which the razor is to be drawn, for the purpose set forth.

2. The finishing-side G of a razor-strop, formed of a segmental cork, with the chord thereof ou the wood, and the arc covered with leather, all as set forth.

3. llie combination of a leather strip witha cork' layer, puckered to produce a slight concavity and greater elasticity for use, upon the sides E and F of razor-strop. 1

4. A hone formed on the side C of a razor-strop from pulverized bone-dust, glue, and flour, in the proportions speciiied. l

-5. A preparation made of crocus and lard ground together, in the proportions specitied, to form a'surface for the No. 2, or side E, ota razor-strop.

. 6. A preparation made of French imperial green v and lard, in the proportions specified, to form a surface for the No.' 4, or side G, of a razor-strop.
